4 Physicians at Woodland Heights now offering world's smallest pacemaker and alternative for atrial fibrillation patients Woodland Heights Offers World s Smallest Pacemaker The world s smallest pacemaker (for patients with bradycardia) was implanted at Woodland Heights Medical Center by Dr. Vivek Mangla and Dr. Subramanya Venkata. This new type of heart device provides patients with the most advanced pacing technology at one-tenth the size of a traditional pacemaker. Comparable in size to a large vitamin, this device is unlike traditional pacemakers in that it does not require cardiac wires (leads) or a surgical pocket under the skin to deliver a pacing therapy. Instead, the device is small enough to be delivered through a catheter and implanted directly into the heart with small tines, providing a safe alternative to conventional pacemakers without the complications associated with leads all while being cosmetically invisible. It is also designed to automatically adjust pacing therapy based on a patient s activity levels. Our goal is to bring the latest in technology to the people of East Texas, states Dr. Mangla. This particular pacemaker is approved for MRI scans and is designed to allow patients to be followed by their physicians and send data remotely, which are life-changing benefits. See next page for more news from Woodland Heights Medical Center.

5 Woodland Heights Offering Alternative Option for Atrial Fibrillation Patients Woodland Heights is now offering patients with non-valvular atrial fibrillation (AF) an alternative to long-term warfarin medication with a newly approved implant. For patients with AF who are considered suitable for warfarin by their physicians but who have reason to seek a non-drug alternative, the new device is an implant alternative to reduce their risk of AF-related stroke. It closes off an area of the heart called the left atrial appendage (LAA) to keep harmful blood clots from the LAA from entering the blood stream and potentially causing a stroke. By closing off the LAA, the risk of stroke may be reduced and, over time, patients may be able to stop taking warfarin. The new WATCHMAN LAAC Implant provides physicians with a breakthrough stroke risk reduction option for patients with non-valvular AF, said Vivek Mangla, MD, Electrophysiologist/Cardiologist. For patients with non-valvular atrial fibrillation who are seeking an alternative to warfarin, this implant offers a potentially life-changing stroke risk treatment option which could free them from the challenges of long-term warfarin therapy. The implantation is a one-time procedure that usually lasts about an hour. Following the procedure, patients typically need to stay in the hospital for 24 hours.
