3 main PROGRAM The Power of Play and Humour Jean-Paul Bell, Creative Director, Arts Health Institute Play is one the first ways we learn to engage with the world, however beyond early childhood it is often considered solely a recreational activity. Jean-Paul will explore how play, fun and humour can be used as an effective learning platform for young people and promote wellbeing through building self-esteem and developing social skills. Flying High : Ice, Ecstasy, Cocaine and Young People Paul Dillon, Educator, DARTA Australia has some of the highest rates of stimulant use in the world. Data suggests we are the world s largest consumers of ecstasy. Cocaine use continues to rise while other drug use is either stable or decreasing, while community fears around ice are growing. Paul will provide an update on current stimulant trends and discuss particular areas of concern for those who work with young people. Understanding Self-Harm and How to Support Young People Dr Claire Kelly, Manager, Youth Programs, Mental Health First Aid Self-harm is a growing problem among our youth who are using it as an extreme way to cope with distressing or painful feelings. This presentation explores the reasons that might lead young people to self-harm, the forms of behaviour this might involve and how to support a young person towards recovery. Radicalisation and Vulnerable Youth Dr Kate Barrelle, Consultant Clinical & Forensic Psychologist There are growing concerns about radicalisation but do we know what it means? In this presentation Kate demonstrates that we are dealing with an age-old social issue, the risk factors that lead vulnerable youth down this path and possible prevention strategies, warning indicators and how to best respond to a young person who is radicalised. Digital Citizenship Greg Gebhart, Senior Education Trainer, Office of the Children s esafety Commissioner Greg will equip participants with the key understanding and knowledge to help young people be safe, positive and responsible online. Greg will discuss the principles of digital wellness and ethics, and how to promote a more positive and appropriate use of technology by young people. Internet Connected Toys and Play: What You Need to Know Dr Kate Highfield, Lecturer, Institute of Early Childhood, Macquarie University Children s toys are increasingly becoming high tech, with traditional toys replaced with tech toys that integrate technology and respond to children in some way. Kate will discuss the research and implications surrounding internet connected toys such as Hello Barbie, and beyond the hype consider potential benefits, concerns and opportunities for learning. Teaching Boys Respectful Relationships Dr Justin Coulson, Parenting, Wellbeing and Positive Psychology Expert We are currently facing a national crisis with domestic violence rates at extraordinary levels and disturbing attitudes prevalent amongst our youth. Successfully addressing this requires respectful relationships education from a young age. This presentation considers strategies for such education for the youth, in particular the boys, in our lives. What 90,000 Young People Can Teach Us About Resilience Andrew Fuller, Child and Adolescent Clinical Psychologist, Inyahead Last year, in the largest research of its kind, Resilient Youth Australia surveyed the strengths and vulnerabilities of 90,000 young Australians. Andrew will discuss the results, highlighting our successes and areas where there is room for improvement, as well as identify the active ingredients for creating great outcomes in the lives of our young people. Practical Strategies to Tackle Racism in Schools Dr Naomi Priest, Research Fellow, ANU Four out of five children born in non-english speaking countries have experienced racism in Australian schools at least once a month. With increasing evidence of the impact of racism on mental health and engagement, it is vital that we address this issue. This presentation will discuss strategies that can be implemented in schools and organisations to challenge prejudiced attitudes. Discount registrations online

4 SPECIAL LEADERS PROGRAM Apps for Engagement Going Beyond Drill and Practice Dr Kate Highfield, Lecturer, Institute of Early Childhood, Macquarie University With over three million apps available for download it is easy to be overwhelmed by choice. Choosing the right educational apps is particularly challenging, as they need to engage the child and also link to specific educational content and curricula. Kate will discuss how to move beyond drill and practice apps to effectively evaluate and integrate apps to encourage higher order thinking in classrooms. Learning About Resilience From Our Students Andrew Fuller, Child and Adolescent Clinical Psychologist, Inyahead There is widespread worry about the resilience of our students yet there is ample evidence that the kids are alright. Our young people have wonderful strengths and capacities yet do we see them as resourceful people who can make a major contribution? Andrew will identify the strengths we can build on, as well as how to work with students in meaningful partnership to empower them and build resilience. Teaching Our Connected Kids Dan Haesler, Educator, Writer, Consultant A lot of schools invest large sums of money in technology. The irony is, they ban the most powerful aspect of it the ability to connect with anyone, anywhere, anytime. It s essential we aren t consumed by moral panic at the expense of the potential that social media affords educators and students. Dan will outline strategies that schools are using with young people to enhance their digital literacy, understanding of the world and even their job prospects. Radicalisation and Vulnerable Youth What Do School Leaders Need to Know? Dr Kate Barrelle, Consultant Clinical & Forensic Psychologist There are growing concerns about radicalisation but do we know what it means? In this presentation Kate will address this social issue, identifying risk factors as well as prevention strategies that can be applied at the whole school level. They will also provide information on how to best respond at an individual and school community level to incidences of radicalisation, as well as identify existing community supports and programs that can help support vulnerable youth. Gambling and Young People Dr Wayne Warburton, Deputy Director, Children and Families Research Centre Young people are increasingly overrepresented among problem gamblers. Why are we witnessing a resurgence of gambling among youth and what are the consequences? Wayne will discuss the impact of problem gambling on young people, warning signs to look out for and avenues for support. Understanding and Addressing Racism and Identity Based Bullying in Schools Dr Naomi Priest, Research Fellow, ANU Racism and identity based bullying have negative health, social and academic impacts which are especially felt by children and young people. Naomi will provide an overview of current research evidence regarding experiences and impacts of racism and identity based bullying among young people. She will also discuss evidence based strategies for countering this and its associated negative impacts within school and community settings. Tackling Violence in Schools Dr Justin Coulson, Parenting, Wellbeing and Positive Psychology Expert Schools and school leaders are being increasingly asked to take steps to provide care and assistance to students, teachers and others who are victims of violence and other forms of abuse almost always at the hands of angry and often disenfranchised male students. Justin considers policy ideas for responding to male violence and abuse in schools with respect to discipline, duty of care, reporting and so on. Self-harm: Prevention and Response at the Whole-School Level Dr Claire Kelly, Manager, Youth Programs, Mental Health First Aid Schools are often reluctant to address the issue of self-harm publically due to the fear of a contagion effect. This presentation explores the issue of self-harm among young people, the evidence behind the contagion effect and what school communities can collectively do to tackle the issue. It also provides practical suggestions on how to sensitively and safely educate about the issue in schools, and teach students strategies to cope with distress and hurt to prevent self-harming behaviours.
