The donation of 200 backpacks of school supplies to area students. We had nearly 20 members involved in the project helping out by filling backpacks, loading them into the drug awareness trailer, and helping pass them out at the Salem Saturday Market. This project resulted in almost 100 hours community service and over $2,000 in school supplies donates to ensure that students going back to school have the tools needed for success. Our lodge also got a rather nice article in the Statesman Journal that, headline aside, focused on our efforts to change the image of our lodge to be one of a premier charitable organization. And at the market itself, after we finished passing out backpacks we were approached by a woman. She thanked us for helping her friend who had been a stay at home mom raising three young children. About two months ago the womans husband walked out on the family leaving the mother struggling to raise her family. Because of the Elks her kids will be able to start school with most of the school supplies they need. This is what we can accomplish, the impact we can have on peoples lives when we follow the cardinal principles of our order. Many others that day took the time to tell us how the Elks had impacted their lives from scholarships, hoop shoot participation, to our holiday food boxes. It is truly humbling and inspiring to witness the impact our lodge has had on so many lives in the Salem community over the last 123 years. So let us remember that no matter the disagreements over petty matters, no matter our differences on how the club should be run, at the end of the day what we are all about is not the overhead cost of the kitchen or the price of drink at the bar. What we are about is the newly single mother who doesn't have to struggle quiet as hard to figure out how to pay for school supplies. What we are about is the person hungry and alone on thanksgiving who we give a place to enjoy a warm meal among friends. What we are about is the good we do, the lives we impact for the better, every single day in our community. That is over $12.1 million reasons to be proud to be a Salem Elk!!!!!!! 1

2 Lodge News As we head into September we start to see summer fade into fall. And with fall brings many things from Pumpkin Spike everything to the busiest time of year for our various charitable projects. We will start collecting food for our annual holiday food boxes. And as in years past if you bring in food items on lodge night Linda will give you pot of gold tickets. We will also be planning our veterans day lunch, turkey shoot, thanksgiving lunch, and of course our remaining Elks National Foundation Grant Projects. These projects will go to providing items for students in need at the Oregon School for the Deaf and providing Christmas presents to the children of our veterans and member of the Oregon National Guard who are in need of assistance. We will also be once again partnering with the Keizer Lodge #2472 to put on a grant project to benefit the veterans at the Edward C. Allworth Veterans home in Lebanon. With participation from the Oregon Spirit Chorus and others we will be putting on a holiday show and providing care packages to all 154 residents of the facility. If you would like to help out with any of these projects please let us know so we can connect you with the various project leads to find out how you can help us make a difference in the lives of those in need as we head into the coming holiday season. The Editor will have sole discretion at what content is placed in an issue based on available space with top priority going to lodge events followed by articles from lodge officers, auxiliary groups, and then items submitted by members. 3 News from the Secretary by Jan Sloan It looks like the Summer is over and we are into Fall which is my favorite time of the year. We ve had a really busy Summer, full of events and it doesn t look like it s going to slow down for the holidays, yes, I said holidays. Where has the year gone. We are down to around 60 delinquent members and we have sent out reminders, letters and made phone calls. If you know of a delinquent member please encourage them to reinstate their membership. We will have new office hours beginning this month. The office will be open from 9:00a.m. until 1:30p.m. Tuesday through Friday. The outside glass doors will be locked during this time but there is a doorbell on the glass doors. Mondays the office will be closed but the lodge will open at 4:00p.m. The lodge will open at 1:00p.m. on Tuesdays for you to enjoy poker and pool. The lodge will continue to open at 4:00p.m. Monday, Wednesday, Thursday, Friday and Saturday. If you need to pay your dues and can t make it to the office during business hours the bartender can take your payment. I will also be available most evenings, please don t hesitate to find me if you have any questions or concerns. Also, if you have something you need to drop off in the office during off hours, there is a basket attached to the split door. Please slip the item between the two doors and we will get it from the basket. 6 The Call of the Open Road, the Salem 336ers RV Club by John Trammell RV Club Reporter The July business meeting was attended by 22 RV Club members and 2 guests. Our club must have made a good impression on the guests, Robert and Gail Davis, because they decided to join our happy camping group. Robert is retired and has had an interesting career in law enforcement and security. Gail has retired from one of the most challenging and important professions in the country, that is being a mother and home maker for their 3 children while Robert was often away from home during his working years. Gail enjoys the leisure time she now has and likes to cook as a hobby. During the business meeting BJ Leach announced that she must resign from the treasurer position. BJ and Randy have sold their home and they look forward to travel as full time RVers which will take them away from Salem much of the time. Best wishes for happy travels to BJ and and Randy. In accordance with club by-laws the executive board appointed Dorris Wing to fill the treasurers position for the rest of the calendar year. Doris has been the club treasurer in the past so the position is not new to her. Doris deserves our thanks for stepping into the position. The club camp out for August at the Elklton RV Park with 9 rigs attending was arranged by Faith Newell and Henry Blackwell and JoAnna and Bill Maddux. They prepared a very nice taco salad dinner on arrival day for us which was perfect by any measurement. We all visited the nearby butterfly farm and learned about the life cycle and favorite plants the butterflies need to sustain their lives. We also visited the restored Fort Umpqua to learn about the history of the area. The fort was operated as a trading post by the Hudson Bay Company from 1836 to the 1850's. The usual washoe tournament was played with Pat Jones and John Tramell winning first place by a slim margin over Hilde Trammell and Henry Blackwell. A good time was had by everyone who attended. The next 2 camp outs have been arranged by the Wings and Janet and Pat Maddux and will be at the Wapiti RV Park September 5th to 9th and at Florence Elks RV Park October 22nd to 25th. The November outing still to be announced will be arranged by Myers and Moodys. The last event of the year will be the Christmas Party at the lodge on December 15th arranged by Janet and Pat Maddx and JoAnna and Bill Maddux.
