1 Our Story Brock Fleming was a happy, healthy and energetic 7 year old boy. He had a loving smile, caring heart and infectious laugh, the kind of kid you would never forget. In an instant, his life changed. On May 4, 2016, Brock fell and hit his head, leading to a series of events that resulted in his diagnoses with DIPG brain cancer. Despite the radiation treatments, trial drugs, and natural supplements he underwent, he kept a cheerful attitude and was determined to kick cancer in the nuts. He educated everyone on sharks, killer whales, and dinosaurs and was considered an artist among his friends known for his drawings of killer whales. When Brock grew up, he wanted to work at Sea World and train marine animals. Brock s strength and courage brought an entire community together, shedding light to this silent, yet deadly, pediatric cancer. Sadly, Brock passed away in December, right before Christmas. About the Team Brock - Cure Starts Now Partnership Melissa and James Fleming are committed to helping other children battling DIPG to combat this cancer! They are teaming up with The Cure Starts Now because they believe in The Cure s mission for which 100% of the money raised goes to fund research for kids battling DIPG. The Cure Starts Now s mission is to cure cancer, one child at a time. They are the only cancer foundation dedicated to a homerun cure for all cancers, starting first with one of the most deadly and difficult: pediatric brain cancer. Many experts believe that the lessons we learn from fighting pediatric cancer will provide the critical first step in winning the battle against cancer, for both children and adults. On Friday, May 12, 2017, we will be hosting our first annual Team Brock s Golf Fore a Cure tournament, at the Avery Ranch Golf Club in Austin, TX. Your generous sponsorship will help benefit The Cure Starts Now, bringing attention to the lack of research and resources available to the thousands of children diagnosed each year with Diffuse Intrinsic Pontine Glioma (DIPG). DIPG is one of the least understood, but deadliest forms of cancer. For children, it s a death sentence once diagnosed, and families are torn apart knowing their loved one doesn t stand a chance against this aggressive and unforgiving disease. What is DIPG DIPG is relatively unheard of as it is a rare form of cancer, but it is our mission to bring this deadly disease to the forefront of cancer research. Currently, because of the lack of funding prioritized for DIPG research, there aren t any promising clinical trials in the field that can bring hope to families affected by DIPG. Less than 5% of all money raised for cancer research is dedicated for children s pediatric brain cancer. It s a statistic that tears at the heart of families affected with DIPG and we are reaching out to you to help fight for a cure. Because of the lack of available funding, there is currently no effective treatment for DIPG, and the survival rate is startling. 50% of kids diagnosed with DIPG pass away within 9 months of diagnosis 90+% of kids diagnosed with DIPG pass away within 2 years 100% of kids diagnosed with DIPG pass away within 5 years There literally has never been a DIPG patient who has survived 5 years post-diagnosis. The typical course of treatment for kids with DIPG is to start with radiation. Kids go through 33 treatments to kill the cancer cells and shrink the tumor. Success is measured in the amount of weeks or months children are given to live normal lives. 70% of patients who respond well to the radiation - this buys them time. During this time, they are able to live relatively normal lives - can run and play with their friends, attend school, etc. Eventually the tumor begins to grow back, and when that happens they can't put them through more radiation. So this is when families try to get their kids into a clinical trial - in the hopes that one of the available trials will show some promise and either cure the cancer, or at the very least, extend the amount of time these kids have left on earth.
