Once that s done, get busy checking things off your list. What would you do with 6 months? Sixteen years ago, the Seena Magowitz Golf Classic began as a way to honor my mother. We raised $10,000 in memory of her that first year, and have raised more than $10 million to fight pancreatic cancer to date. Our mission is advancing awareness, early detection, and the eventual eradication of pancreatic cancer, the most lethal of all cancers. 40% of pancreatic cancer patients die within 6 months of diagnosis, and 75% die within the first year. Ask yourself: What would you do if you were given 6 months to live? This golf tournament aims to make sure no one else will ever have to seriously consider that question. With passion and vigor, we can make their voices heard so that eventually others will be spared the pain and tears. Our commitment is an undying effort to fund the leading edge of translational pancreatic cancer research until that mission is accomplished. Together, we re making progress. In the 16 years since the Seena Magowitz Golf Classic began, 45 clinical trials have been conducted for advanced pancreatic cancer. Only 4 were shown to extend patient survival, and 3 of those were led by TGen Distinguished Professor Dr. Daniel D. Von Hoff. 11 Overcoming Resistance The Seena Magowitz Golf Classic has sponsored clinical research that led to a whole new treatment regimen and has improved the survival of patients with advanced pancreatic cancer. This treatment is used all over the world and we are starting to see long-term survivors. This proves the Seena Magowitz model of rapid application of the best possible benchscience-to-patient-care works. We need to keep it up! As you will see this year, we are concentrating on why pancreatic cancer is so resistant to a patient s own immune system. One major problem is clearly the patient s killer T cells do not infiltrate or traffic into the patient s tumor. If there is no trafficking, there is no tumor destruction. New bench science has given us ways to increase that trafficking. We need to immediately apply that science to patient care to further improve survival (perhaps to dramatically improve it).
