2 PRF s History The concept for PRF began in 1998 when Sam Berns, the son of two Massachusetts physicians, Drs. Leslie Gordon and Scott Berns, was diagnosed with Progeria. At that time there was no knowledge of its cause, no funding for Progeria research, no treatments and no organization advocating for the children. Unwilling to accept that nothing could be done, Sam s parents gathered family, friends and colleagues and established PRF in Dr. Gordon serves as Medical Director and Dr. Berns is Board Chair. Since then, thousands of international experts, dedicated volunteers and others have joined to help advance PRF s mission and provide hope for the children and their families. PRF is making progress at a phenomenal pace. In just 18 years we have gone from complete obscurity to worldwide public awareness, seen a 310+% increase in the number of known children with Progeria, and completed the first-ever Progeria clinical drug trial that led to a treatment that is giving these special children stronger hearts and longer lives. However, there is still much work to do to cure them. Sam left a legacy of inspiration with his HBO film Life According to Sam and his wildly popular TEDx talk, My Philosophy for a Happy Life. Without the discovery of new treatments, children with Progeria die of the same heart disease affecting millions of normal aging adults, but at an average age of just 14 years. PRF s mission is to discover treatments and the cure for Progeria and its aging-related disorders including heart disease; it is the only organization in the world solely dedicated to this undertaking. Because of Progeria s biological connection to heart disease and aging, finding the cure may also help millions of adults with heart disease, as well as the entire aging population.
