1 Bulletin THE ROTARY CLUB OF LAVERTON POINT COOK DISTRICT 9800 Bulletin No May 2013 President s message 1,500% return on investment $2 million in freight $32 million shipped Club Details: Postal Address: P.O. Box 1134 Altona Meadows Lavertonpointcook@rotary Lavertonpointcook@rotaryd9800.org d9800.org Look out Austria, based on this weekends Club visioning exercise there will be an imminent request for Partner/Sister Club status with one of your clubs. More on that later. This is another bumper issue of our bulletin as last weeks was delayed due to the President not writing his report in time. Many things have happened and are happening and we ve all been involved. 2 weeks ago saw the celebration of the West Footscray Donations in Kind (DIK) store clocking up 100,000 Volunteer hours this century. Frank Spiteri represented the club at this celebration and spoke of it at our meeting that night. In the last 12 years a great deal has been accomplished outlined below: $2M raised to pay for freight $3M value of the volunteering allocated as Overseas Aid $32M of top quality material given to people overseas who deserve our help $37M the combined total of Overseas Aid 3.7 Km the length of the containers end to end 20,000m3 of goods recycled much of which would have ended up as landfill We heard from a very proud Father (John Ray) on this same night about the accomplishments of the Running on Empty team who completed the 100km Oxfam Trailwalker course in just over 18 hours. They finished in 34th position out of 750 teams and raised over $4,000 in the process Our last minute speaker on the night was Bob Hawkins who spoke on the origins of flight and the history of our area. He showed us some very interesting vision and with an obvious passion for history explained how the Point Cook RAAF base was instrumental in forming the country s first flying squadron. In fact Point Cook is the oldest continuously operating military airfield in the world. On 1 March 1914, the first flight at Point Cook was made in a Bristol Boxkite. When the RAAF was established in 1921, Point Cook was the only airfield. Website: Secretary: Mark Schirmer Next Meeting: Date: 08 May 2013 Venue: Intertek Time: 7.00pm sharp Program: Vocational Visit Page 1

2 Bulletin No. 38 A number of our members represented the club at the Anzac Dawn Service in front of the Werribee Cenotaph on Anzac day. While it was an early start, it was a moving ceremony with the largest turnout in recent memory. The club layed a wreath and enjoyed breakfast at the Werribee RSL before some of us left to join the march in the City. Lest we Forget. This past weekend, the club participated in a Club Visioning exercise. We were to imagine ourselves in the year 2016 and tell all of our achievements thus far. Many of us got into the spirit of the exercise by really imagining ourselves being in the year 2016 and I think one of the facilitators (Julie Mason) got right into it given that she will just be finishing her year as District Governor at that time. There were many new ideas and buy-in from all those that were present. A team of members will be digesting the results and coming up with a consensus vision in the coming weeks. A hearty congratulations to all involved and many thanks to the vision facilitators from district. A major project for the club, headed up by Chris Egger has been to install a Playground at the Laverton Autistic School. This became a multi cluster project with RC Williamstown and Point Gellibrand contributing along with support from our own cluster clubs and a Foundation Grant. Our members got together to build the playground borders and spread over 27m3 of soft fall mulch. The official opening of the playground will be in a couple of weeks. Our community, Our strength, Our future! Last week we had the Westbourne Grammar, Model United Nations Assembly (MUNA) representatives, Sarah and James talk to us about what MUNA is and about their own aspirations. They will be representing India in Bendigo later in the month and we look forward to hearing about their time there. Cluster Muster 3 The youth edition is to be held on 15th May. We will be meeting at The Brook this time and Stephanie Woollard from Seven-Women will be one of the main speakers. Our own exchange Student Signe, will also be presenting so I encourage all our members to attend. The cost for members is $25 and for non members is $45. Please let Michael know if you are coming and if at all possible, please pay in advance. Yours in Rotary, Page 2

3 Bulletin No. 38 Progressive Dinner 2013 Last week I put this report in the bulletin, and I would like to thank Craig Dowling and Philippa KcKiernan for offering up their homes for one of the courses, but I am still looking for 1 more home to host a course so we can get to the next stage of knowing who will be attending and who will be cooking which course make this the social event of the year I think it will be. As past stated this event will be held on the Saturday 1st June, starting at 6.30 pm, and I am looking for your help to make it a success. For those who are unaware of how a progressive dinner works, you have Entrée at one members home, Main at another, and Desert and final destination at the third home, with members been allocated to make either an entrée, main or desert to feed us all on the night. If you are able to help please let me know as soon as possible so we can start with the planning of the night. This is a great way to get everyone together in a social atmosphere, and to help with the atmosphere the theme for the night will be an R Theme and I would like to encourage all members to dress up as something beginning with the letter R. This could be as simple as wearing your club shirt as a Rotarian, but why not put your thinking caps on and come up with something a little different, there are a lot of things and jobs that start with R. The sooner you let me know you are able to attend the better as we need to know how much food we need for each course. Partners and families are more than welcome, but remember it will be a late night so keep this in mind if you have young children. With your help we will have a great night of fun and fellowship, look forward to seeing you all there. Michael Nash michaelnash1@bigpond.com Ride for Recovery An update from James Bowles who has just completed the Ride for Recovery (Melb to Syd) Dear All, The final morning of the ride was quite enjoyable because we only had 30kms into the city from Cronulla. The day was perfect - sun shining and quite warm outside. Everyone woke up that morning slightly dusty after all the celebrations the night before (was actually the true finish line for many in their minds). It was hard to think that we just covered nearly 950km over the previous 6 days and literally was taking the glory ride into the city down to the Opera House where our families and friends were waiting. Even though the ride was short, it took two hours due to typical Sydney traffic. Also, George (VP of Celgene who was the biggest sponsor of this event) got his first flat tyre literally 500meters from the finish line so we had to stop for a change as well. Ha. What a classic way to finish the event?! District 9800: District 9800 Governor: Dennis Shore Assistant Governor Port Phillip Cluster: Cherrie Osborn Rotary International: RI President: Sakuji Tanaka All riders road into the Botanical Gardens together in two by two formation. Smiles were across everyone's face to the clapping and cheers of our families and friends. We did it! Our bums survived. Our legs were feeling great. Our spirits and pride were up. Thank you everyone for your generous contributions. As of Monday the riders (18 in total) raised a total of $160k for the Leukaemia and Myeloma Foundations. All money will be used to support patients and their families. That is a great success for our inaugural ride. To everyone that supported us we all thank you. The foundations thank you.
