1 Bulletin T H E R O T A R Y C L U B O F L A V E R T O N P O I N T C O O K D I S T R I C T Bulletin No April 2013 President s message Last weeks meeting saw our exchange student Signe Christerson give us a report on her greatest adventure so far. For 3 weeks, Signe and the rest of the Districts exchange students went on Safari visiting much of Australia that many of us have only read about. Places such as Cooper Pedy, Ayers Rock, Kings Canyon, Alice Springs, Mt Isa, Airlie Beach, Gold Coast Coffs Harbor and Sydney were all highlight of the trip. We had a view visitors on the night, and I d like to thank them for coming. We had our Singaporean friend David Tai who presented the club with a bannerette from the RC of Singapore, Past club president Domenic Cichello, Current host parent Barbara Pepin and new host parent Narelle Lapin. The club thanked Barbara for taking good care of Signe for 3 months and this past weekend she has moved in to Narelle s home. I would like to say a huge thank you to those who made the effort to come to our Rotarians at Work day on Sunday. We had some terrific support from Bunnings Hoppers Crossing who not only supplied a lot of the equipment but also sent two of their employees to help out. Antoinette and Nick were a great help on the sander and with the paint brush. Everyone had their green thumbs working overtime with planting Australian Natives (thanks to friends of Skeleton Creek), weeding, protecting existing plants and finally Mulching the entire area. The staff from Hobsons Bay City Council were very impressed with the amount of work we got done and commented on how good it looked. Club Details: Postal Address: P.O. 2 Bulletin No. 37 This weekend also saw 2 events which this club has supported. Firstly, James Bowles (a friend of Verena and Wolfgang) started his Ride for Recovery this weekend to raise money for blood cancer patient services. The club has sponsored him for $250, if you would like to donate as well see his fundraising page here: Secondly, the team called Running on Empty ran in the Oxfam Trailwalker event on Friday where they covered 100km in just over 18 hours. They came in 34 th of 750 teams. The event has raised over $2.3Million to overcome poverty and injustice around the world. The team raised just over $4,000 and if you would like to contribute further see their fundraising page here: A request has been made by the Salvation Army to rattle the tins at Laverton railway station for the Annual Red Shield Appeal in May. I am looking for support from a few extra members this year so please let me know if you can help out. The dates involved are Thursday (May 23), Friday (24th), Monday (27th), and Tuesday (28th) each morning from 6:30am until 9am. This year s District assembly (19/5), Rotary Engaged, will be an entirely new and exciting format. This is a significant event in the Rotary calendar in preparation for incoming office bearer s and club preparation for its new year. It is extremely important that we have strong participation and interaction this will be the value add to all and of benefit to your club and Rotary. It is important for all of next years Board members to attend, but it of course open to everyone. Yours in Rotary, District 9800: District 9800 Governor: Dennis Shore Progressive Dinner 2013 Well the social event of the year will be held on the Saturday 1 st June, starting at 6.30 pm, and I am looking for your help to make it a success. For those who are unaware of how a progressive dinner works, you have Entrée at one members home, Main at another, and Desert and final destination at the third home, with members been allocated to make either an entrée, main or desert to feed us all on the night. With this in mind, I am look for 3 members to make their homes available for the different courses. If you are able to help please let me know as soon as possible so we can start with the planning of the night. This is a great way to get everyone together in a social atmosphere, and to help with the atmosphere the theme for the night will be an R Theme and I would like to encourage all members to dress up as something beginning with the letter R. This could be as simple as wearing your club shirt as a Rotarian, but why not put your thinking caps on and come up with something a little different, there are a lot of things and jobs that start with R. The sooner you let me know you are able to attend the better as we need to know how much food we need for each course. Partners and families are more than welcome, but remember it will be a late night so keep this in mind if you have young children. With your help we will have a great night of fun and fellowship, look forward to seeing you all there. 6 1 In April 2013 the West Footscray Donation In Kind Store will celebrate a significant milestone, 100,000 volunteer hours worked at the Store this century. We are taking this opportunity to highlight what has been achieved in the last 12 years and to thank the people and organizations who have made this possible. To gain a national perspective this activity is duplicated in the other Donations In Kind operations in every state. In Victoria there is also another vibrant store in Geelong. Rotary s involvement in this area started 50 years ago and in 1987 Donations In Kind was establish as the national name for this activity. In the12 years a great deal has been accomplished. $2,000,000 $3,000,000 $32,000,000 $37,000, kilometres 20,000m3 *raised to pay for freight *the value of the volunteering allocated as Overseas Aid *of top quality material given to people overseas who deserve our help *the combined total of Overseas Aid *The length of the containers end to end *of goods recycled much of which would have ended up as landfill *return on investment $2 million in 1,500% freight $32 million shipped 1000 s of lives improved Thank you to the Volunteers West Footscray Donations In Kind Store Celebrating 100,000 Volunteer Hours Since 2000 Our volunteers Rotarians and members of the public come from a diverse background but all provide valuable service. Some are regulars, some are casual others come for a Club working bee, but all are welcome. They have different passions and interests; some know the people who will receive goods others are more interested in the recycling aspect. They all enjoy the pleasure of working with people who care and who are prepared to make a contribution. All leave at the end of the day knowing that because of their effort someone will benefit from their work. We also acknowledge the people who collect goods and deliver them to the Store; their labour is not included in the figures above s of patients receiving better care as a result of the medical equipment provided s hospital beds supplied

7 2 Thank you to our Donors You make everything possible. Some of you we can acknowledge openly and we respect the privacy of others. Increasingly organizations are becoming more involved as they recognise that we will comply with any restrictions related to their donations. They are aware that their goods will be given to someone in genuine need, for free, in one of the 217 countries where Rotary is established. It is important the Rotary Clubs provide our donors with details on where their donations go and who they help. We also seek to give organizations the opportunity to be partners in our projects and have their company featured as sponsors. Thank you to our Supporters Without your support to fund the Store and to provide the funds to ship the goods there would be no Store or goods being received. You are silent partners in every container that is shipped. Wonderful support for student in 20 countries 1, exercise books and supplies shipped in the last four years 10,000 s of desks and chairs allocated The Future What will we achieve in the next 12 years? The potential supply of donations is vast and at times we have to reject excellent material because we lack shipping funds. Volunteers are readily available and we only operate regularly two days a week. We can dramatically increase output if funds are available for shipping. Partnerships are the answer, getting support from the people who have reusable goods to donate. Schools are starting to warm to this approach and with minimal difference between cost of landfill and freight to ship the goods, helping a sister school can be a very rewarding experience. Business waste problems and associated disposal costs can be turned into positive PR opportunities with a little imagination and help from Rotary Clubs. Example; Surplus computers can become the core of a computer training centre in a developing country proudly sponsored by XYZ Company. Community attitudes need to be changed. People are very positive about recycling and giving surplus material to others in need. All they have to do is realize that they are responsible for the waste generated by the organizations that support them, and can influence how the material is disposed of. We need to encourage Government to think about this area and examine the benefits of supporting volunteers recycling reusable material and giving it to deserving people in developing countries. We could help more people if the focus was on outcomes as well as dollar and more consideration given to using suitable recycled material as an alternative. The future is in our hands.
