2 Larnie Jr., Saundra, Angela, Sherri, Diane, & Camden Zellner Sisters Share Love of Family and Cornerstone Angela and Saundra Zellner were featured as 2018 s Annual Fund Campaign Story Angela Zellner s Story When we lost my sister, Camie, I was not ready. Before she died, I planned to be STRONG if anyone close to me died. All of this was supposed to happen when I was older, not when I was in my 20s, and NOT to my sister who should have had years left with us! Camie was gone on February 26, 2016, and we had no warning, no time to say goodbye or I love you. We went through the motions of cleaning out her space and getting things in order before her burial. I tried to stick to my plan and be strong. As the weeks passed, I was isolating myself and would cry, be angry, and hate that Camie was gone. Everything changed when she died. For over a year, I sank into darkness. My sister told me about Cornerstone of Hope s services. I knew this was an answered prayer. I sat in the parking lot before my first appointment, wondering if I was making the right choice. I got out of my car, walked back numerous times, and finally made it inside. The journey was nothing like I had imagined. It was filled with tears, hurt, anger, guilt, shame, forgiveness, and love! Love because I could freely talk in my sessions with no judgment. I had begun my healing process. Saundra, Camden & Angela I wanted to give back to the place that gave me hope, just like Camie, with her kind heart, would have done. Moving through the grief, getting support, and being able start sharing my story with others ignited the healing. My journey of hope, love and support have sprung me from the darkness. I thank Cornerstone of Hope, who God knew would be there to support us during such a difficult time. Saundra Zellner s Story I am proud to be number five of six siblings, and that number was very much part of who I was. So when I received a call that my sister passed, my world caved in. Camden Elizabeth was 35, extremely intelligent, shy, and compassionate. Camie was gone abruptly, and for my close-knit family, it was traumatic. We found there were blood clots in her lungs suffocating her. After the funeral, life was not going to wait for me to get myself together. With five days bereavement leave from work, I was expected to step back into my life and function, but I was not ready. I would cry until 4:00am and get up three hours later for work. By 2017, I barely made it through the year and I didn t recognize myself. I searched for counseling options and heard Cornerstone come up more than once. My life had been at a standstill, and I desperately wanted someone to reassure me it was okay to keep living. TABLE OF CONTENTS Page 3 Pain to Purpose Page 4-5 News and Events Page 6-7 Upcoming Programs Page 8-9 Development News Page 10 Spiritual Update I found that Cornerstone was a space where I could safely fall apart and be put back together. The staff was kind, gentle and understanding. They let me grieve, provided tools, and encouraged me to receive love and move forward. I was comforted seeing people from so many backgrounds in the same place, receiving help and hope. Supporting Cornerstone means you are giving tangible hope to those who do not have the resources to make it on their own. To this day, I champion the organization because I do not want another person to go through grief without a place like this. Cornerstone helps lives start again and my sister and I are proof of that. We humbly ask you to support families like the Zellners by making a gift to this year s Annual Fund at cornerstoneofhope.org Page 11 Professional Programs All photos in this newsletter are property of Cornerstone of Hope and may not be reproduced, copied, transmitted or manipulated without written permission.

7 A Glimpse into our 16th Annual Benefit Gala Saturday, February 23, CHAMPIONS OF HOPE: KIM AND JOEY LOJEK BY MARK TRIPODI Integrity, humility, generous and tender of heart are words that come to mind when I describe Joey Lojek. Passionate, kind, hard-working and service minded are characteristics of his spouse, Kim. Together, they have brought a light of enthusiasm, trust and willingness to join Cornerstone of Hope s mission of meeting families in their darkest hour, constantly offering HOPE to those who grieve! Christi and I formally met the Lojeks 10 years ago at our annual Gala. As Cornerstone s programs and outreach continued to evolve so did Joey and Kim s commitment. In spending time with them over the years, we have always tried to express our gratitude with words of praise and thanksgiving only to hear both of them say in tandem, No! Thank you! Cornerstone of Hope deserves the praise not us. Inevitably tears well in their eyes when we discuss what brings families to seek support from our ministry. In particular, Kim is reminded of what it was like to be a grieving teen as she experienced the loss of her mother at the age of 17. The compassion they have for those who grieve is so evident. They chose to journey with friends and colleagues who grieve with words of encouragement, a listening ear and steadfastness to always be present with them. Those who know Joey recognize that he is soft spoken. However, his heart speaks volumes when you get to know what a caring and giving man that he is. Those traits are evident in the culture of his company, Premier Truck Sales and Rentals. During a recent tour as I interacted with his employees, I witnessed the utmost respect for their leader. As a former Board Member, Kim continues to go above and beyond for Cornerstone of Hope at every opportunity. She is relentless in her pursuit of unique auction items for our annual Gala and creative in her approach to suggest better ways for us to gain awareness in the community, serve more families and increase our development efforts. Kim always shares a new idea on how Cornerstone of Hope can be even better. We are blessed by her thoughtful insight. We are honored and privileged to recognize Kim and Joe Lojek as our 2019 Champion of Hope recipient. Thank you for always always being so eager to help us, help others! May God continue to guide and protect you, your family and your work every day!

14 Spiritual Addition of a Spiritual Advisory Committee by Christi and Mark Tripodi As 2018 comes to a close, we would like thank God for the existence of Cornerstone of Hope for the past 15 years. We believe that God moved our hearts to start a place to comfort and instill hope in those who grieve. Fifteen years sounds like a long time but the truth is we are just into our teen years as a ministry! We constantly seek guidance from other Christian agencies who began their ministry years before Cornerstone was founded. After much advice, prayer and discernment, we identified an organizational need to form a Spiritual Advisory Committee led by a local Chaplain. There are many possibilities for this committee to make an impact. As we launch this new initiative we want to be intentional about two crucial areas: intercessory prayer and new Christian programming, such as memorial services within the community, an inspirational speaker series, book studies, and retreats for adolescents and adults. The work has already begun! We are humbled and excited to announce the appointment of Cornerstone of Hope s chaplain, Fr. Jim Cosgrove. Born and raised in Garfield Heights, Fr. Cosgrove attended St. Martin of Tours Grade School in Maple Heights with his two siblings and graduated from Trinity High School in He received his biology degree from the University of Dayton before returning to Cleveland to pursue a career in nursing. All glory be to God that God had other plans! Fr. Jim heard the call to the Catholic priesthood and with fervent joy and passion has never looked back. He has a strong desire to walk with anyone who seeks the grace, consolation, and peace only God can bring. Having been connected to Cornerstone of Hope through our current programs, prayer and development efforts, Fr. Jim is eager to be a presence for our healing ministry. He will also collaborate with our Board and staff to identify other Christian pastors and lay leaders to participate in this ecumenical committee. Stay His, Fr. Jim says. He wants nothing more than for us to know we are always seen and loved in the eyes of our heavenly Father. 14 cornerstone of hope a center for grieving children, teens & adults

INTRODUCTION TO CRISIS INTERVENTION March 18, 2019, 5:00pm - 8:00pm Presenter: Pete Bliss Cost: $35 CEU: 3 CEU for Social Workers, Counselors and Nurses. Continuing Education hours for Funeral Directors pending. Description: We ll explore crisis definition, terminology, theory and management models. You will also receive an exhaustive resource list for further crisis management training. School Crisis Team Training February 26, March 4, & March 13, 2019 Participants must attend all three days Time: 8:30am - 3:30pm Presenter: Laura Serazin, LPC, ATR Cost: $300 CEU: 18 CEU for Social Workers, Counselors and Nurses. All schools have their own crisis plan, however, the challenge is often having enough trained and qualified people to meet the need. It can be difficult for one or two counselors to handle the counseling needs of an entire school when the community has a sudden loss. Training is designed for private and public schools who intend on developing a school crisis team within your district, or in combination with other schools/districts.
