We can t thank our supporters enough for the generosity shown at this year s benefit. Our roster of local celebrity attendees included our emcees, Denise Dufala and Jimmy Malone, as well as local sports greats Ted Ginn, Sr., Ted Ginn, Jr., Ray Boom Boom Mancini, Don Cockroft, and Adrien Clarke. However, there could possibly be no other great sports icon than our 2017 Champion of Hope Award honoree, Sam Rutigliano, former coach of the Cleveland Browns. He has been a mentor to us, said Christi Tripodi, founder of Cornerstone of Hope. Our taglines are because of the words he taught us. Pain to Purpose and Tragedy to Triumph. I can t think of a better person this year. Coach Sam echoed those taglines in his acceptance speech along with his wife Barbara, who themselves suffered a terrible tragedy when they lost their four-year-old daughter. Page 4 Page 5 Page 6-7 Page 8-9 Page Education and Training Summer Camps Cleveland Events Groups & Workshops Columbus Updates God will never put any more on you, than he can put in you, he said. The two greatest motivations in my life have been Jesus Christ and adversity. Coach Sam and Barbara celebrated 62 years of marriage, and as she said, We went through thick and thin. There was a time in our lives that we felt like you didn t want to go on living when we lost our daughter. 3 14 TH annual benefit gala An Unforgettable Evening cont. In speaking about Cornerstone, Coach Sam mentioned that it has become a blessing for so many people, especially those touched by the growing epidemic of heroin and accidental overdose. Four brave families touched by accidental overdose and who found support at Cornerstone were featured in a video produced about the epidemic. In the State of Ohio, we re really at ground zero for accidental overdose and the opioid epidemic, said Mark Tripodi, founder and executive director of Cornerstone of Hope. In 2016, six people died every day in the State of Ohio to an overdose. Just in Cuyahoga County, there were 70 deaths in the first two months of Christi stressed that the heroin epidemic can touch anyone. It s frightening because to me, you look at those people, and it can happen to any one of us. I have had more talks with my kids in the last six months about heroin, about drugs than I ever have because they say if you use it once, you re hooked. families, with a specific accidental support group. Cornerstone is seeing an increase in families seeking counseling after accidental overdose. In fact, Cornerstone is the only nonprofit in Northeast Ohio serving these Today, Cornerstone runs 70 to 80 free support groups each year. It is only through the generosity of Cornerstone s donors, that Cornerstone is able to continue providing these free services to families in need. Postvention is the best prevention, said Christi. If Cornerstone serves an individual or a family whose been through a tragedy like this, and we walk with them and we give them the tools to transform that pain into purpose, purpose to live again, purpose to find joy again, purpose to give back again, then in their giving back, they change one family, maybe a classroom, a neighborhood, and the possibilities really are endless, and we re seeing it at Cornerstone.
