1 June-July 2018 Volume 1, Issue 4 ROAD to RECOVERY Above: Entry to Normanton Recovery & Community Wellbeing Service Below: The fire pit a popular yarning place A newsletter for around the Gulf. Nothing but big events with NAIDOC and Rodeo happening in June and July. NRCWS has had many wonderful moments being involved in these community events. These fun filled events showed a real team effort from staff and clients. They showed off their artistic talents producing a self made humpy and horse on their float which took out 3rd prize in the local rodeo street parade. If you would like to talk to someone about NRCWS and the service we offer, please call us on Inside this issue Doomadgee delivers!... 2 Farewell Shannon, comm. engage... 3 NRCWS and community,... 4 Healthy cooking... 5 On country... 6 Deadly Choices and activities.7 Above: NRCWS support worker Steven Anderson engaging in some camp fire stories
2 Doomadgee delivers! NRCWS is pleased to be able to offer our service to people from Doomadgee. We have had a number of people from Doomadgee attend the service, and value greatly what they bring to our little community at NRCWS. Chris, our Wellbeing Officer who visits Doomadgee, had a productive visit to the community during the month of June. Chris attended the cultural dance on the Wednesday night as well as the morning tea held at My Pathways on Thursday to celebrate the completion of 330 Moon Sick Care Bags. Chris Also met up with a number of services including NWRH, Save the Children, My Pathways, Justice Group, Youth Hub, Gidgee Clinic, Act For Kids, Mental Health, Hospital, Sai and Elijah from Blackstar, Council, ATODS and RFDS. I was amazed at the good work going on in Doomadgee, its great to see the cultural dance happening regularly with Elijah and team doing a deadly job. Also the Moon Sick Care Bag project has been inspirational and a credit to the ladies of Doomadgee, My Pathways and Yolonde Entsch. They have put Doomadgee on the world map. Chris. 2 Left- Warren picking up his daughters certificates for their role in the Moon Sick Care Bags. Right Yolonde and the ladies at my pathways presented with certificates at the morning tea. 3 Farewell Shannon and good luck! Above: Shannon cutting the cake with Stephanie & Patrina Above- Shannon & Owen sharing a smile. Comments from clients: - She was very helpful and friendly It was really good to meet July came as a shock as we said our farewells to one of our longest serving staff members Shannon Gallagher. Shannon has been with NRCWS since its opening in Shannon has been heavily involved with the service and lots of community projects in that time. Shannon will be missed by clients and staff alike. NRWCS would like to thanks Shannon for her commitment and the creation of many memories during her tenure and we wish Shannon all the best with her future endeavours. Community engagement. The clients recently had an outing on the Gulflander Train thanks to Gulflander Normanton and Queensland Rail. The clients took a trip out to Critters Camp where they then returned by road to do some fishing and a camp fire lunch. 3
