1 The Local Cancer Community Update of Submitted by: Tim E. Renzelmann October 24 th, 2016 Stories of the Local Cancer Community: Laughter May Not Always Be The Best Response to Cancer Or Is It? It probably wasn t what the couple that attended our TLC Survivorship Session for the first time was expecting! It all started out pretty routinely as Aaron Covey, Certified Laughter Yoga Leader, talked to us about the benefits of laughter, stating that the average child laughs several hundred times during the day and most adults only laugh 7 to 10 times! crying. Laughter may not always be an appropriate response to cancer So but this was a good reminder to all that every moment of every day in every situation we have a choice to laugh or not to laugh! Laughter is good medicine! It may not make the cancer go away but it can help us better cope. By the end of the night he had many of us literally rolling on the floor laughing! Before long, he had many of us standing in the middle of the room doing some laughter exercises ( Ha-ha, Ho-ho-ho!) At first it was a little awkward (at least for me) to force myself to laugh only for the sake of laughing but before long that forced laughter turned to genuine laughter and I found myself laughing at the fact that we were laughing! Yep laughter is indeed contagious. We all have our humorous cancer-related stories but cancer is not always a laughing matter. And sometimes, as we find ourselves faced with the challenges of cancer, all we can do is laugh in order to keep us from Even those who, for reasons of their own, chose not to participate in all the activities certainly seemed to both smile and laugh throughout the night! Watch for future Laughter Yoga sessions! Join us at next month s TLC Survivorship Session as we celebrate the month of Thanksgiving with a one-night Gratitude Retreat on Tuesday, November 15 th at 6PM! TLC Survivorship Can Be Fun! Wanna Color Together? Mary Schueller, RN recently sent me an article on the Art of Coping that states, Recent studies propose that the crayons we put away in our youth, in an effort to be perceived as grown up, may in fact help us as adults as a form of relaxation. She suggested a Coloring Book Night! Sounds like fun! It might be as simple as scheduling a time and place and providing a few supplies, or if any of you have a special interest in or some experience with adult coloring and would like to help make this happen please let me know! NOTE: If you have any questions, comments, ideas or are interested in getting active in the local cancer community in any way I d love to hear from you!
