As former Precinct Administrator (Chief of Staff) for County Commissioner Gary Fickes and a native Texan (born in Dallas), Carolyn Sims has served Northeast Tarrant County in many different capacities which has led her to this position with the county. After graduating from University of North Texas, she worked in a bank and then applied her education degree by teaching 8th graders how to type (yes, typewriters not computers), was a middle school counselor, and had her own secretarial business. Being a mom of two wonderful kids Trey and Kate, she went back to work full time as President of the Colleyville Chamber of Commerce for six years and then Arts Council of Northeast Tarrant County for seven years. Representative Vicki Truitt recruited her to serve as chief of staff in Austin during the 2003 session. After that session, she returned to the area to work for the Town of Westlake and Westlake Academy Foundation and then the Northwest ISD Education Foundation. All of this has added to her awareness and education about Northeast Tarrant County and its people. Carolyn presently serves on the MHMR of Tarrant County Board, NE Chamber Board, Northeast Leadership Forum Board, and volunteers with many organizations in the area. She loves being able to help others whether it is serving on boards and/or committees, listening to people s concerns, sharing job opportunities, or providing information to people on what Tarrant County can do to assist them. ATTENDANCE: COST: SPONOSORS: In 2014, approximately 265 individuals attended Boots & Bling Casino Night raising over $53,000 benefiting individuals with intellectual disabilities and their families. Funds raised support North Texas SNAP programs and creates a network of support independence, choice and personal success. Individual tickets - $100 ($75 prior to 8/14) and tables of (10) ten - $850. 3 Why Sponsor Boots & Bling Casino Night North Texas SNAP creates and supports a variety of programs and services for individuals 17 and older living with intellectual disabilities. Our vision is to have a community where people with intellectual disabilities and their families have a network that supports independence, choice and personal success. In 2014, North Texas SNAP served approximately 204 members with disabilities. Your Sponsorship Supports the following programs: Transportation Voucher Program: As a result of persistence and hard work by several SNAP volunteers, SNAP s Transportation Program was initiated in August of Non-governmental grants and individual donations to the transportation fund have allowed Members greater individual freedom. Through Yellow Cab, SNAP provides Members needed transportation to jobs, school, social activities, and in general, travel throughout the Mid-Cities area. In 2014, North Texas SNAP distributed approximately 272 traditional transportation vouchers and 1637 new freedom vouchers to SNAP Members. Project Neighbor Program: Members may participate in this Program which allows Members to live independently with a little support. For a small monthly Fee our Program Director, Paula Baker, will work with qualifying Members to develop independent living skills, interpersonal skills and problem solving skills, as well, as oversee their general well-being. Paula teams with the Member s families to develop their network of support. In 2014, our Program Director worked with 4 North Texas SNAP members on a weekly basis to help them develop independent living skills. Expanded Living Program: A comprehensive, individualized program to prepare our members for the step into greater independence and responsibility. Developing knowledge, skills and understanding will build confidence as we work together towards the goal of greater independence. Over 20 areas of skills and development will be covered through small workshops, one-on-one training and life coaching in the areas of Nutrition, Food Preparation, Consumer and Money skills, Communication, Self-Advocacy, Personal Safety and many more. In 2014, our Program Director worked with 2 North Texas SNAP members helping them prepare for greater independence. We have added 3 new members to this program for Education: SNAP promotes continued learning experiences after high school through educational workshops on a variety of topics where our Members participate in learning how to interview for employment and problem solving on the job, as well as, interpersonal and independent living skills. In 2014, North Texas SNAP offered 31 workshops with a total of 92 participants. Employment: SNAP s Workforce Internship Program was developed to help prepare Members for employment through volunteer internships with area employers. SNAP s Program Director matches members (interns) with employers and acts as a liaison to facilitate communication and an optimum experience for both parties. Internship employers include: Chili's (Euless-Glade Rd, Grapevine Mills and Roanoke) Office Depot (Euless), Family Video (North Richland Hills) Bedford Library, Mooyah's (North Richland Hills), P.F. Chang s (Grapevine), Copeland s (Southlake Hilton), Coal Vines (Southlake), AMC Grapevine Mills (Grapevine), Kroger (North Richland Hills), and Goodwill Employment Center (Grapevine).

4 Social Program: SNAP Members enjoy a very active social program with supper club, bowling, movies, dances and other planned activities. SNAP s Social Programs give Members the opportunity to form friendships and to fill a void left by isolation often faced by people with intellectual disabilities. The more experiences our Members have within the safety of the group, the more likely they are to try new ventures. In 2014, North Texas SNAP offered the following social programs and community projects: Social Programs: Supper Club 30 members participated each month. Movies 22 members participated each month. Bowling 20 members participated each month. Spring Dance 85 members participated in this event. Halloween Party 82 members participated in this event. Christmas Party 98 members participated in this event Community Projects: Girls Night Out distributed approximately 50 Homeless Survival Bags for the Stewpot Ministry in Dallas. Men s Club held a bottled water drive benefiting the Euless Fire Department. Girls Night Out and Men s Club conducted the Annual Helping Hands Food Drive benefiting Metroport Meals on Wheels. They collected over 12,000 items and were able to feed approximately 8,000-9,000 local seniors in need Special Outings: Texas Rangers Game members participated. Lone Star Park (Day at the Races) - 40 members participated. George Bush Presidential Library - 25 members participated. John Dealey Plaza 23 members participated. Quarterly Birthday Parties 40 members participated. Exceptional Living for Exceptional Women offers Girls Night Out : This program provides our ladies with information regarding issues unique to women such as self-advocacy, financial independence, women s health, and self-image while affording them a forum in which they can socialize, develop friendships, and support each other. In 2014, approximately 35 women participated each month in the Girls Night Out. SNAP Men's Club: This program provides SNAP men with information regarding issues unique to them, such as self-reliance, financial independence, men's health, collaboration and citizenship. The Club affords them a forum in which they can socialize, develop friendships and focus on characteristics, skills and issues of interest through positive role models from the community. In 2014, approximately 24 men participated each month in the Men s Club. J.O.B.S. Club: Just Our Business Support (J.O.B.S.) group meets monthly at the SNAP office under the direction of SNAP s Program Director, Paula Baker. J.O.B.S. The Club allows Members to come together to share their work experiences, discuss problems on the job, and learn how to develop skills and attitudes to succeed in the work place. Often guest speakers from community businesses come to share insights with the group. J.O.B.S. Club continues to grow in the number of participants each month. In 2014, approximately 18 members participated in J.O.B.S Club each month.
