Knowledge about contemporary Aboriginal knowledge and application of tradition can potentially increase effectiveness in health service provision for Aboriginal people by informing the attitudes and approaches used by health care professionals. Appropriate models of health service provision can be based on contemporary Aboriginal philosophy and an examination of the potential role of tradition in treatment models. This presentation will address the following questions: What are some traditional Aboriginal understandings surrounding health and wellness? What are some traditional Aboriginal understandings of illness? How can traditional Aboriginal and Western medicine complement each other?

6 Florence Highway Aboriginal Peer Leader Program Live Well with Chronic Conditions Saskatoon Health Region Florence is originally from Pelican Narrows, Saskatchewan but has made Saskatoon home for the past few years. She attended U of R off Campus Indian Social Work Program there. In 1995 she was diagnosed with Type II diabetes. Through awareness, literature, prevention education on diabetes Florence had to take responsibility to prevent secondary health problems and began her healing journey. Since then she has been involved with such programs as F.F.F (Fun, Food & Fitness). Another is Live Well with Chronic Conditions. Here the Aboriginal Peer Leaders provide information and practice strategies to help Communities manage chronic illness through Digital Stories. She also got involved with P.P.A.D. (Peacekeepers Pedaling for Aboriginals with Diabetes). Evelyn Linklater and Florence joined the group two years ago and walked from Thunder Bay to Ottawa, Ontario and this year from Muncton, New Brunswick to St. John s, Newfoundland. It was an honorable and humbling experience. It is very important to look after ourselves, our families and our communities in the prevention of diabetes. Respectfully, Florence Highway
7 Evelyn Linklater Aboriginal Peer Leader Program Live Well with Chronic Conditions Saskatoon Health Region Evelyn Linklater is involved with many organizations that help First Nations people better comprehend and control their circumstances related to diabetes. She is a certified Peer Leader with the Community Diabetes Outreach Program in Saskatoon. She is also a respected Elder in the community. She has been a member of the Aboriginal Grandmothers group for 12 years. The groups focus is to share values and teach the young about life and traditions. She is also involved with the Food, Fun, and Fitness program offered at the White Buffalo Youth Lodge in Saskatoon where she exercises with other people who strive to live healthy. Evelyn shares her own personal story of living with a chronic condition with other people not only in her own area, but she's carried her message to Aboriginal communities as well. In fact, for the past two summers she has accompanied the Peacekeepers Pedaling for Aboriginal People with Diabetes (PPAD) bike tour. In 2008, she joined them on their journey from Thunder Bay, Ontario to Ottawa. This year, she traveled to Moncton, New Brunswick to unite with the team again. On June 11, 2009, Evelyn was there as a part of the PPAD tour as they completed their walk in St. John s, Newfoundland. To acknowledge her leadership in helping others to better understand and manage their disease, Evelyn took part in a project with the Aboriginal Live Well with Chronic Conditions program and other Peer Leaders to create digital stories of their lives to share with others. Evelyn serves as an good example of how living with a chronic condition can be regulated, and to not let it control you, but that you have the power to control it. Her story is available for viewing at under the tab Stories from the Saskatoon Health Region.
