4 President s Report: Our speaker last week was Susie Maher. Her presentation was based on her trip to Nepal volunteering with World Youth International on a Nurses in Action Program in Sept/Oct last year. She was here to thank the Rotary Club of Croydon for donating hundreds of toothbrushes that she was able to incorporate into medical/dental camps in remote villages near Kathmandu. Having always wanted to volunteer as a nurse from graduation, Susie went to Africa in 2004 and worked at a school in Kenya for a month, teaching students the importance of sanitation, HIV/AIDS prevention, and provided first aid classes to the people in the community. With money raised through generous family and friends, she was able to organise an eye clinic for the kids and staff at the school and cover costs of consultation fees, surgery and spectacles etc. It was such a rewarding experience and she vowed to do something similar again one day. In 2016, Susie saw an advertisement in the Australian Nursing Journal for a volunteer nursing position participating with World Youth International and taking part in the Nurses In Action Program to Nepal for a period of 4 weeks. The toothbrushes Susie took to Nepal were removed from the toiletries packs supplied to the Mental Health Unit at Maroondah Hospital as they were deemed to be hazardous as the handles could be broken and used as a weapon. Susie was accompanied to her talk by her husband Darren who works at the Mental Health Unit, and her two children Zoe and Liam. Susie s neighbours Bob and Yvonne Ferrier also attended to hear more about her work overseas. Susie Maher & husband Darren with children Zoe and Liam Susie Maher with Marlene Sinclair Last week the Mental Health Unit at Maroondah Hospital received two guitars for use by patients in their music therapy section. The guitars were on a wish list provided to the Rotary Club of Croydon. The guitars were purchased via Hans Music Store in Croydon. Frank Igweonu Nurse Unit Manager IPU1, Sherryn Aslani Nurse Unit Manager IPU2, President Stephen Bode, Charindar Farrell - Occupational Therapist

5 Each year we select an item from the Wish List. Last year we purchased and provided heavy duty bean bags. The Unit is also always in need of clothing donations and magazines suitable for men. (not New Idea!) and is looking for people to sew cloth bags used to contain arrival information packs (which includes our toiletries items). In 2017 the Rotary Club of Croydon donated $1000 to the Eastern Health Coolheads campaign. Eastern Health launched scalp cooling services at Maroondah Hospital in March They are now offering this optional service to women with breast cancer and have recently begun some trials with women receiving chemotherapy for ovarian cancer. A brand new Breast and Cancer Centre has just opened at Maroondah Hospital. This centre will be a hub for breast (and other) cancer services in the eastern suburbs. They will be installing donor recognition boards in the new centre, some of which will feature our wonderful Coolheads donors and our Club name. We received advice from the Swinburne Young Mums Program who were very thankful for our $500 scholarship donation. The funds provided support for 3 young mums this year, all of who have showed commitment to completing their studies and each had financial difficulties. One young mum is the main carer not only for her son but a mother going through cancer and several younger siblings, another has coped with her little son being in and out of hospital and the last one homelessness. All are progressing extremely well and are very thankful of your help. Each young mum did put a small amount towards their fees as you know we think this is very important. They were also thankful for the toiletries items Jill Fletcher delivered recently. They decided to wrap them and the girls get to choose a gift as part of birthday celebrations. They will be having another Open Day in October. Two resolutions for RI were voted on last week. The proposed resolutions were: 1. To request the (RI) Trustees to consider Environment as a key element for health protection and to include environmental Risk Reduction as standard measure for Disease Prevention and Treatment (DP&T) Focus Area. 2. To request the RI Board to consider officially recognizing EarlyAct as a Rotary program. Both resolutions were unanimously accepted by the 13 members present. There is a Board meeting this week. As we are about to move into a new Rotary year a topic high on the list for discussion is who will be President in 2019/20? Please speak to any Board member if you think this may be you, before they speak to you! A reminder that the District 9810 Changeover is being held on Saturday, 2nd June at the Southern Golf Club in Dingley. With Russell Gurney the new District Governor for 2018/19 we would like to see as many Members attend to support Russell and Shelley. The Vocational Awards Night is on next week. There will be awards for Vocational Excellence, Pride of Workmanship, and Junior Citizenship. Make sure you are there to support this major Croydon Rotary project. Thanks again to Kevin Francis for all the hard work he has been putting in to this project, and to Margot for allowing him the time. Regards, Stephen Bode

6 Rotary Vocational Service Vocational Awards Dinner Meeting on 29th May 2018 This meeting is an important event for our club. We have received some outstanding nominations for our Vocational awards and the selection process has been completed. Guest speaker is : Chris Zidak, Manager Business and Development, Maroondah City Council, BizHub at Realm. Greg King, incoming D9810 Vocational Chair, will attend the meeting. This meeting is a partner s night and we expect many visitors to be present to support the awardees. Please pen this into your diary as a "must attend" meeting. Stephen Bode President

7 Australian Rotary Health Honouring PP Rob Henry With a Named PhD Scholarship Australian Rotary Health (ARH) is currently advertising the Rob Henry Memorial PhD Scholarship, named in honour of the late PP Rob Henry of the Rotary Club of Boronia. For nearly thirty years, Rob was the key organiser and coordinator of the Rotary District 9810 Ride for Research Dollars, which raised more than $1 million dollars for research through Australian Rotary Health. Sadly, Rob lost his battle with cancer last year, and after discussions between ARH and the Rotary District, it was decided the best way to acknowledge Rob would be to name a scholarship after him.
