4 President s Report Last Tuesday we had Daniel Du Bois and Jessica De Jong of the Rotaract Club of Yarra Ranges giving us an update of their club s status and activities. They also provided us with suggestions on further cooperation between our 2 clubs. Stephen Bode and I attended the District 9810 Youth Protection Policy Seminar on Saturday last. We learned a lot about the amendments made to the policy, initially lunched in May, necessitated by the new Victorian Legislation on Child Safe Policy which makes the provisions mandatory on 1st January I will have to arrange a session for all members to be made aware of the full implications of this policy on the club, members, partners and volunteers as Rotary has many youth programs which we are all involved in. The Pegasus Barbeque on 1st November 2016 will start at 5:45 am with setting up and will go on till about 12 30pm. Thank you all those who have put their names on the duty roster. If there is anyone else who can help out, please inform Marlene. The Christmas Raffle tickets are ready. The first sales was done at the Ruskin Park Primary School last Saturday. My sincere thanks to Ross Taylor and John Hexter for taking charge of the sales there. Jean will be looking for volunteers to man the booth and sell Raffle Tickets at the Maroondah Festival on Sunday 6 th November Jean will circulate the roster list to be filled up at our meeting. David Ferres has already arranged the sales sites and dates for the Christmas raffle starting on 15 th November He will announce this at the meeting and also by mail. At our Club Fellowship on Tuesday 8 th November, 2016 at Crave Restaurant, 238 Dorset Road, Boronia, we will be entertained with a slide show talk on the travels of one partner of our Rotary family. You still need to be there on the night to know and hear that person. I am really looking forward to an interesting evening of good fellowship with all members and partners. Please mark in your calendar the date of our Annual General Meeting: Tuesday 22 nd November The 4-Way Test Secondary Schools Speech Contest Finals will be hosted by us on Tuesday 29 th November 2016 at the Dorset Gardens Hotel. As it is our meeting day, all of us should make it a point to be there. Cheers Joy Varughese
5 Chairman s Report The speakers from Rotaract Club of Yarra Ranges who provided their update for us last Tuesday were Vice President Daniel Du Bois and Treasurer Jessica De Jong. The Rotaract Club focuses on Club Service (Fun, Fellowship and Service to members), Community Service (service to society & humanity), International Service (development of world understanding and peace) and Professional Development (personal development of members). The membership increase in the club comes mainly from RYLArians. They listed out the projects carried out by the club in the resent past or are involved in currently. These include Kitchen on Wheels, Family Fun Day which is the Good Friday Appeal, Fundraising for Rotarians Against Malaria (RAM), the Trivia Night together with Rotary Club of Montrose & District. This project, the proceeds of which is to fund children in Malawi to go to school, raised over $5,000. They also organized a Primary Schools Film Festival which was very successful and satisfying, and this may be continued next year. The club normally raises funds for (a) Paper Cranes for Peace, (b) Art Building Children s Dream, (c) RYPEN, and (d) Bridge Builders. The club s 5 th Anniversary will be celebrated on 13 th December 2016 at the Dorset Gardens Hotel. They requested our club members to make a note of that date. What s coming up next for the Rotaract club is as follows: a) The Boat that Rocked Fun and Fellowship event; b) Relay For Life Project; c) New Day Box; d) Halloween Party which will be a joint Rotaract District event. How Rotaract and Rotary can collaborate was answered by the following suggestions: a) Manage events jointly; b) Support for Profession Learning; c) Attendance at events/meetings, support for club and projects, and sponsorship if possible; d) Rotaract can provide access to varying Rotary demographics; e) Rotaractors can provide assistance in effective usage of social media tools. Brian McDaid, our Youth Service Director, will be attending their meeting on 25 th October to discuss various ways of developing further cooperation and support. Their talk was well received by the members present at the meeting. Daniel and Jessica were thanked appropriately at the end of their talk.

7 THE ROTARY 9810 YEAR 10 FOUR WAY TEST SPEECH COMPETITION This competition has been held in this district for the last 9 years and was the brainchild of PDG Brian Foley who witnessed it in another District. On Tuesday 29 th November the final five students will battle it out for first, second and third positions (and prizes of $200, $100 and $100 respectively) in this speech contest at our Croydon Rotary club meeting at the Dorset Gardens. The winner will be asked to speak at conference in Geelong in March next year. The huge semifinal of 12 students will be held next Tuesday night, 25 th October at Mulgrave Country Club (sorry it is Croydon Club night but venue problems) and our Croydon delegate Jessica Scott from Melba College is through to the semifinal. Why is this competition so important to young people? The aims of the competition are: Promote to young people the ideals of Rotary through the Four Way Test Encourage proficiency in public speaking Develop confidence and self esteem Students can test their skills before and audience Foster relationship between Rotary and schools The students have to discuss at least 2 of the 4 ideals through their speech- 1. Is it the TRUTH? 2. Is it FAIR to all concerned? 3. Will it build GOODWILL and BETTER FRIENDSHIPS? 4. Will it be BENEFICIAL to all concerned? All heats, semi-finals and final are judged by my Toastmaster friends, who have a very comprehensive list of assessments and judge for us year after year. They also help coach the students going through to the next level. As it is held at home I encourage everyone to attend with friends and partners and you will all be amazed at the topics and style of these 16 year olds. Marlene Sinclair District Chair Four Way Test Speech Competition
