4 President s Report Last Tuesday we were thrilled by the 3 members of the young generation. Liam Ball from Melba College spoke on his great experience as a delegate representing Pakistan at the Model United Nations Assembly. Next the winners of the 2 Croydon Primary Schools Speech Contests, Emily Cooper of Yarra Road Primary School and Hayden Stark of Warranwood Primary School showed their talent at public speaking. The Fundraising Committee will meet again on Tuesday 20 th September, after the regular meeting. The last promotion/sales, of the Tom Burlinson Concert (8 th October 2016) at a shopping Centre, was at Chirnside Park on Thursday till Saturday last. My sincere thanks go to David Ferres (the coordinator), Ross Taylor, John Hexter, Ian Cumming, Sue Jonas, Viv Baum, Eric Thomas, John Anderson, Brian McDaid, Jean Stuart, John Gander, Lou Davies, Kevin Francis, Jim Tinney, and Bev Stehn for spending time manning the counter during their respective slots over the 3 weeks of sales. Members who made seat reservations without payment are required to surrender unsold seats by Tuesday 20 th September. This will ensure that all unsold seats are available for purchase through Trybooking from now on (and for sales at the concert, if still available). Our next Club Fellowship will be on Tuesday 8 th November, 2016 at Crave Restaurant, 238 Dorset Road, Boronia. It is an Italian style restaurant with ample parking space and offering a wide variety of pizza, risotto, pasta and international meals. You can pick and choose your meal and pay accordingly. We will be entertained by a special member of our Rotary family with an interesting presentation during the first part of the evening. Fellowship dinner will follow. This Tuesday we will listen to Sue Herbst from the Migrant Information Centre supported by Tial Hnem, a member of the local Burmese Community. The last meeting in September (27 th ) will be our Club Forum on the topic The Future Direction of the Rotary Club of Croydon. I have included the result of the survey done during David Alexander s Survey elsewhere in this issue. I would also like to know your views, on the Christmas events, on the 27 th. The options are: a) No Breakfast meeting; Only the Christmas Dinner b) Evening BYO BBQ party with KK in the park; No Dinner Meeting c) A breakfast BBQ with KK in the park; No Dinner Party d) A breakfast or dinner at a restaurant with KK e) Normal Christmas Dinner and meeting at Dorset Gardens Hotel f) Both breakfast meeting at restaurant & Dinner party at Dorset. g) Kris Krinkle (KK) be with recycled or reinvented items rather than with purchased items as in past. Cheers Joy Varughese
5 Feedback based on Members Present at PDG David Alexander s Talk Meeting Structure: Vast majority find current structure satisfactory; A few would like some flexibility. Frequency of Meetings: Vast majority prefer to retain the weekly meetings; Some would prefer fortnightly meetings. Social (non-formal) Meetings: Vast majority did not offer a comment Membership Challenges: A quarter consider the cost to be high; Vast majority prefer current meeting time ; A quarter felt that too few members pulling weight ; One third felt that poor attendance at meetings was a problem ; One quarter felt that member involvement was not satisfactory ; A few felt that information flow to members was inadequate ; Half wanted Corporate Membership to be created with clear rules ; A few wanted Friends of Rotary to be formalized with rules. Speakers for Tuesday 20 th September Sue Herbst is the Manager of the Migrant Information Centre who has developed a very strong connection with the Burmese community in our midst. Tial Hnem is a migrant from Burma and is a co-worker of Sue. There are approximately 5,000 migrants from Burma who live in the eastern suburbs primarily in the Local government areas of Maroondah and Yarra Ranges. They are a tightly knit group made up of seven separate communities living together harmoniously. As with other refugee communities, they too face similar issues, namely employment, housing, reunification with families overseas, education and acquiring a satisfactory command of the English language. This talk may present our club with an opportunity to associate with and provide some form of assistance to the Burmese community in our neighborhood.
6 Chairman's Report 13/9/16 This week we had the pleasure of being addressed by some of our bright young students. Our first speaker was Liam Ball, year 11 student from Melba College. Liam was one of our representatives at this year's Model United Nations Assembly held in Parliament House, Melbourne in May. Liam and Bronte Rowlands, our other representative, took part at MUNA as delegates from Pakistan, dressing in Pakistani national costume and debating various topics as delegates of that country. Liam reported on the various international relationships displayed at the Assembly with those of Russia and the US as well as North and South Korea sounding particularly interesting. Next we heard from our Primary School Speech Competition winners - Emily Cooper from Yarra Road Primary School and Hayden Stark from Warranwood Primary School. Emily spoke about the scourge of family violence and how it devastates the lives of some children in contrast to her own safe, secure and comfortable family life. In her conclusion Emily gave a commercial for our upcoming concert which is raising funds to assist children affected by family violence. Hayden spoke about the problems of addiction - drugs, alcohol, cigarettes, Facebook - and the great difficulty of trying to prevent or recover from such addiction. Thank you Liam, Emily and Hayden. You all display great potential and are a credit to yourselves and your schools. Jill Fletcher Chairman Hayden and Parents Emily Hayden Emily and Parents

8 TOM BURLINSON performs The Best of SINATRA! Presented by: Downunder Promotions Presenting Australian star of stage and screen Tom Burlinson. Accompanied by his All Star Band,Tom sings all the wonderful songs of Sinatra in his prime. In 1991 Tom was chosen by Tina Sinatra to sing the voice of her father in the Golden Globe Award-winning mini series Sinatra. This led to a whole new musical development in his career. He created his own show in celebration of the great man, Frank- A Life in Song, which became hugely successful all around Australia, and also travelled to Toronto, Canada. The great entrepreneur Steve Wynn invited Tom to perform at his Wynn Las Vegas resort in Later came the national tour of Now We re Swingin!, in which Tom paid homage not only to Sinatra, but also to some of the other great stars of vocal swing - Nat King Cole, Dean Martin, Tony Bennett, Sammy Davis Jnr, and Bobby Darin as well as Harry Connick Jnr and Michael Buble. Tom also toured around the country with a smaller musical ensemble performing Simply Sinatra. The original 1966 album Sinatra at the Sands has been described as brilliant, incredibly exciting, the definitive portrait of Sinatra in the 60 s, essential, a priceless document and simply the best. Tom Burlinson has proven that he is one of the best in the world at Sinatra-inspired singing. He is renowned for his smooth style and astonishing performance skills. Don t miss this wonderful show as Tom will once again do justice to the marvellous musical legacy of the Chairman of the Board, Frank Sinatra. The next best thing to Sinatra - The Courier Mail 8 pm. Saturday 8 th October 2016 George Woods Performing Arts Centre, Yarra Valley Grammar School Kalinda Road, Ringwood Tickets: $40
