2 MEMBERS CORNER Clive Baum: It was a good day last Friday for Clive. He was able to sit and drink for himself but not feed himself. Clive is more awake and talking but making sense only sometime. He has now been transferred to Box Hill Hospital which makes it so much easier for Viv. Dawn Anderson: Dawn is glad to be back home. She still has her exercises to do, to ensure her bionic knee is strengthened and doesn t fail her. She is up and about, visiting friends for coffee at the shopping centre. Jean Stuart Guess Who! Currently, the Paul Harris Fellow recognition acknowledges individuals who contribute, or who have contributions made in their name, of US$1,000 to The Rotary Foundation of Rotary International.

4 President s Report: The Vocational Awards Night is on this week. There will be awards for Vocational Excellence, Pride of Workmanship, and Junior Citizenship. Make sure you are there to support this major Croydon Rotary project. Our speaker will be Chris Zidak, Business Development Manager of Maroondah BizHub. The Bizhub network could be an important resource in identifying local business people who are potential Rotary members. Kidney Health Australia have confirmed that they will be organizing a formal publicity launch of the Big Red Kidney Bus funded by the Rotary Club of Croydon during the afternoon of Tuesday 26 May at the Dorset Gardens. This the same day as Changeover. You will soon receive an invitation from KHA for the event. At the recent Board meeting it was agreed that the Club would sponsor a person to attend the 2018 RYLA program which runs in July. It is expected that the participant will be referred via our connections with Rotaract. Participants in the 6-day program are years of age and will receive an intensive leadership training course for community minded young people. Participants are chosen for their leadership skills and their potential to have an impact on their community. The participants discuss issues of professional responsibility, human relations, ethics, leadership and communication skills. The program incorporates a range of seminars and workshops as well as team and skill building activities. Participants also learn about Rotary s purpose and service to the community as well as the elements of community and global citizenship A reminder that the District 9810 Changeover is being held on Saturday, 2nd June at the Southern Golf Club in Dingley. With Russell Gurney the new District Governor for 2018/19 we would like to see Members attend to support Russell and Shelley. Please refer to the flyer appearing in the Chronicle. The District Changeover is early this year as many Rotarians will be away at the International Convention in Toronto 23 to 27 June. National Tree Day - Sunday, 29 July :00am to 1:30pm There is an opportunity for members to work with Maroondah Council and the Friends of Dandenong Creek to restore native vegetation between the creek and the shared pathway to create habitat for birds, animals and other critters. Jean will be following up with further information and to determine whether members are interested in participating as a Club. Members will have received notification that our membership fees that have remained unchanged for many years will be increased by $15 for This is necessary as RI and District charges have continually increased, and our reducing member base has reduced income for administrative purposes. To minimize the increase, the sergeant session, internal raffles and copper pot collections will in future be added to the club admin funds. Invoices will be issued in June. Please notify John Anderson if you require any Wanted posters to display in shops or community noticeboards. 5 Chairman s Report We had Lorraine Smith from the Lilydale & District Historical Society speak to us about the beginning of the Historical Society, the history of her family and also some of the well known families in the area. The Lilydale & District Historical Society was formed in 1971 to help plan and mount suitable displays for the Shire of Lilydale's Centenary in February After the celebrations, society members tried to return objects loaned for display but their owners said the society could keep them. This was the start of the society's collection but it lacked a suitable storage and display space. With the assistance of the Shire of Lilydale, in 1976 the society was able to open its own museum in the former shire offices in Castella Street, Lilydale. The Museum was opened by Pamela, Lady Vestey, Dame Nellie Melba's grand-daughter who was the society's Patron until her death in The society operated the museum until 1989 when, due to the value of the collection and the need to plan a major redevelopment, the Shire of Lilydale took over the management of the museum and employed Victoria's first full-time municipal curator. Today, the Yarra Ranges Regional Museum is owned by the Shire of Yarra Ranges. Lorraine Smith began researching her family s history in 1997, starting with photocopied birth, death and baptism certificates which had been in her mother s possession for many years. She undertook a genealogy course at the University of the Third Age (U3A) to learn how to get started. The first resources she used were the microfiche births, deaths and marriage records held by the Church of Latter Day Saints at Croydon and Wantirna and various local libraries entering all information onto Family history sheets. Fluke played a part in her researches when a chance look at Tasmanian shipping records on disk at Kew library revealed the shipping records of her great, great grandparents arrival in Port Phillip in Acting on a hunch she discovered that he great, great, great grandfather was transported from England to Tasmania in A trip to the Tasmanian Archives revealed the transportation certificate and discovery of the grave and headstone of his wife who had died in Lorraine s research included trips to the Shire offices and cemeteries in many towns right across Australia. Lorraine has been a member of the Lilydale & District Historical Society since 1993 and has been conducting cemetery tours ever since. Regards, Jean Stuart
