2 BIRTHDAYS & ANIVERSARIES PRESIDENT S MESSAGE Well we had another action packed meeting last week with two local organisations benefitting from our generosity as we continue to make a difference and build a better local community. We heard from speakers from both the Rainbow Swim Club of Point Cook and the Werribee Coast Guard with the club to purchase up to $1000 worth of swim tops for the largely autistic children that are the focus of the Rainbow club and up $500 worth of equipment for the Coast Guard. Our Rotary logo will go on all the swim tops and equipment purchased. We had a number of guests at the meeting including prospective member Morisio who we hope to induct at the 1 st meeting in December, our outward bound exchange student Claire Pepin and her family, our own exchange student Pierre and John Kinia s guest John Lindon, who is temporarily living in the area, but may become a permanent resident and prospective club member. This meeting will also go down in the record books as having our fastest ever Annual General Meeting which lasted a whole 3 minutes. However, all the important stuff was still achieved, a future club executive and presidential succession are all in place and the club remains in a very strong financial position. A particularly pleasing aspect of the meeting was how quickly all the rosters filled for our upcoming events at Xmas by the Lake and the two Bunning s BBQ s we have scheduled for December. This reflects our growing and enthusiastic membership. Talking about growing membership I am very pleased to announce that Ian Boys has decided to become a member of the club and will be inducted in January, with Mark Schirmer his sponsor. Ian has played an important role in our club over the past two and a half years as our Bulletin Editor and as our Quiz Master for our monthly trivia sessions, plus he has made key contributions as the main bus driver during our PNG teacher visit in September 2010 and as the relief bus driver for the recent Wyndham Rotary Friendship Exchange. In fact Ian has an awesome record of volunteering spanning the past 50 years. See the attached summary of Ian s volunteer record in this Bulletin. 3 Pierre our will be attending the ROTEX camp for exchange students near Anglesea between the 2 nd and 4 th of December Wyndham City Council is holding a morning tea at 10am on Monday the 5 th of December at the Council Offices to celebrate the 10 th Anniversary of the International Year of Volunteers and has invited any of our available club members to attend On Sunday the 11 th of December at International House there is a Rotary Youth Exchange Presentation event which Ian and Christina Boys will be attending along with Pierre and Claire Pepin. Claire will be presented with her youth exchange blazer at this event before she heads off to Brazil for a year in January. For details of this coming weeks meeting please see Gordon s programs report. Vice President Michael Nash will be standing in for me as I will be interstate with work. That s all for now. 4 PROGRAMS REPORT This week is partner' night and we have a guest speaker talking on the dangers that social media such as facebook presents to young children. The prime audience is parents and grandparents who care for young children, but may not be fully aware of these types of media. We received a fair bit of media coverage on this event to try to draw in the public to our meeting. Much of this media coverage was thanks to Wolfgang. My strategy in doing this is to keep our club in the media as much as possible. Hopefully over time people will see that we undertake a variety of projects in the community and also have interesting speakers at meetings. Collectively, we will hold ourselves out to be varied and vibrant and as such a desirable organisation to join. Our club really seems to be buzzing along at the moment, with many great ideas coming forward. The usual venue to discuss new ideas is at the board/ project night, when we also commonly have a new member's Behind the Badge talk as well. This has worked well in the past, but with an influx of new members and making time for their maiden address, we are finding that the board/ project night is getting filled by other activities which eat into the time that should be allocated to project discussion and board business. To maximise the time for our monthly business session, a bit of a tweak on programming was necessary: The Member Behind the Badge talks will now be on the first Wednesday of the month. The next one up is Alex Dawia on 7 December. Numerous members have been wanting to make substantial presentations to the club, which is fantastic, but this needs to be organised so that meetings potentially don't go on for hours. So, I request anyone that wants to make a "significant" presentation to please talk to me and I will book a date for them so they can get priority on the night and ensure their project gets a good airing, rather than be rushed through due to time constraints. Wolfgang has booked a time slot in February for a Marketing strategy he wishes to put forward, and as at the time of writing I am just formalising dates for a couple of other significant presentations that some other members wish to do. I trust that you can see that this will allow everyone the best opportunity possible for their own project, without having to rush something through which really requires a bit of time. Any smaller or quick issues can still be dealt with along the way, but they will always be subordinated to someone who has booked a time slot. Gordon Clarence

8 Wyndham Disability Access Group (member for 6 years plus Chairman for a term) Melbourne City Mission Community Friends Program, (matched with a disabled man in Footscray), we have regular contact and go out together at least once a fortnight and have become inseparable friends for life after eleven Years Raising funds for the above group by charity bicycle rides the first was from Werribee to Cobram Barooga and back in relay with Les Porter (with each riding one hour on and one hour off), a ride from Lakes Entrance to Werribee in company with a Policeman and a Fireman in which Ian rode all the way Relay bicycle ride with Les Porter from Wodonga along the Murray River to Lake Alexandrina in South Australia, where again Ian and Les rode one hour on and one hour off to raise funds for Lions International and to raise awareness of Prostate Cancer Driving the support vehicle and assistant for Les Porters ride from Port Augusta to Werribee Homestead Blues Festival Committee for 2 years Main bus driver for Western Highlands Teachers Club visit to Melbourne for 2 weeks in September 2010 hosted by the Rotary Clubs of Laverton Point Cook and Wyndham Relief driver for Rotary Club of Wyndham during their recent friendship visit by a group of Rotarians from New Mexico and Texas USA. Currently bulletin Editor for Laverton Point Cook Rotary Club (2 ½ years). Host Father and assistant coordinator with his wife Christina in supervising or hosting 52 Exchange Students (ongoing for more than 20 Years), of which 19 students were hosted by Ian and Christina.
