1 Volume, Issue Northern Newsletter April - June 2018 April - June 2018 Inside this issue: NILS 2 Update your contact details 2 Upcoming Events 2 Monthly Carer Support s 3 Carer poem 4 Calendar of Events 5 Another summer has flown by and a new season is here filled with the privilege of working alongside carers and their family members. Our Townsville team members continually meet carers who s gift of caring is a meaningful, valued and precious act, a gift that speaks deeply about what it means to be human. Carers do count! Sadly, research and feedback from many carers is that they feel they don t have a voice. They don t feel valued and acknowledged for their caring role by their community, government or sometimes even their own family members for what they do on a daily basis. Know your value You Count! There is real power in knowing you count! We hope many of you can join us along with our CEO, Debra Cottrell and Deputy Chairperson, Robbie Sinclair on the 7 June for a carer conversation to feed back what will make a difference in your lives. This information is used to help shape our service delivery and also influence key decision makers and policy in relation to carers and all that they do. We recently welcomed Kerry Prier to our team in February and hope you all get to meet her or speak to her in the near future. Carers Self Care Surround yourself with positive people. The people around you have a huge impact on your life. Some people can drain your happiness, personal resources, energy and self-confidence. Think about the people you spend the most time with. Do they have similar values to you? Would you call them positive? Do they help you feel competent? Do they support you? SAVE THE DATE! Carer Conversation Forum Thursday 7th June 2018 Riverway Arts Centre, Townsville You will also see in this edition, our counsellor Jane Morris has shared some self care tips which we encourage you to practice. Hoping to see you at one of our support group meetings. If you ever need to speak with someone, please give us a call. We are here for you. Kirsty and team According to Jim Rohn (an American motivational speaker) you are the average of the 5 people you spend the most time with. Care for yourself by spending more time connecting with people who enrich your life, inspire you or make you laugh.
2 Page 2 Northern Newsletter April - June No Interest Loan Scheme - NILS Introducing our new Administration Assistant, Kerry, who started with us in February. Please join us in welcoming Kerry to the Carers Queensland team. Need an interest free loan for essential household goods and services? The Carers Assist No Interest Loan Scheme provides interest free loans for carers on low incomes. It is a community-based program that enables carers to access fair, safe and equitable credit for the purchase of essential goods and services such as a fridge, a washing machine or dryer. A NILS loan may also be provided for such things as health aids. Upcoming Events: Carers Australia Qld and TAIHS EXPO 28 June am - 3pm Townsville Aboriginal & Islander Health Service Gorden Street, Garbutt How does NILS work? When a borrower makes a repayment to a NILS program, funds are then available as a loan for someone else in the community. This is called circular community credit and this is a real demonstration of the community in action. The maximum amount that can be borrowed is $1500. A range of service providers as well as the NDIA Partners will be on hand to answer all your questions in relation to accessing NDIS, support services and carer services. Is your contact information up to date? Have you moved or changed your contact details recently? Have any of your circumstances changed since you completed one of our Client Detail Forms? Have you had a change of address, contact phone number or address? This is our way to ensure we can provide you with the best service that we can, but to do this we need to keep your information current. Carers Queensland will never give out your information to a third party without your consent. Please call into the office to update any changes or contact us to send out a form by mail or so that we may revise your details. This allows us to be able to invite you to access our services, special events and contact you when we have new groups, activities, lunches, morning teas and guest speakers for example.

4 Page 4 A heartfelt poem written by a Townsville carer about supporting a loved one with a mental health condition... Moon Dreams When the chaser of dreams appears to be lost, It s the maternal unit who accepts what life has tossed. There are times I admit, When I feel like throwing in the towel. But the best remedy I know is a bloody good howl. After countless tears have fallen, And I have no energy left, A slow smile then replaces my temporary scowl. When the full moon is at its peak, That s when I look skywards and speak, Why did mental illness strike my son? Why wasn t he allowed to reach full bloom? Written by Coralie Cassady If you would like to write a poem or short story about your life as a carer that we could publish in a future newsletter, we would really like to hear from you. Simply call our Townsville office on or post your poem to Carers Queensland, Northern Office, PO Box 256,, QLD 4814 Please include your name and contact details. Carers Queensland Ltd. ABN:
