Local Impact Partners Connect with our local community and serve others.
Making an Impact One of Calvary Church s primary goals with our Impact ministry is community engagement. We want to be a church that goes outside of our four walls to be salt and light to the community and our world. Minnesota has hundreds of quality, viable non-profits that we could partner with. But in order to be effective in our ministry, we narrowed our focus and chose several primary local partners. Throughout the year, we highlight our local Impact partners and alert you to how you can serve with your family, Small Group, or Life Group. This booklet lists contact information for our partners so you can serve directly with them if you d like. As you look through this booklet, please contact either Vonn Dornbush or Bonnie Johnson if you have any questions on local service and community engagement at Calvary. 3 After School Kids After School Kids (ASK) is a free, licensed after school program held at our Roseville Campus for children who attend Falcon Heights School. It s a fun, educational, and safe place to go after school. Children get homework help, snacks, recreation time, and an opportunity to learn about Jesus. Volunteer to help with homework, deliver snacks, and monitor recreation time. Any help is appreciated! Tina Skipper, Children s Outreach Director tina.skipper@calvarychurch.us Barnabas Ministry The Barnabas Care Team meets the needs of senior adults through prayer, phone calls, and home/hospital visits. The purpose of this team is to provide care for the body and a cure for the soul, and we do this by being a friend to the house-bound, those living in assisted living facilities, and special need adults. To volunteer with Barnabas Ministry, contact Stan McFall. Stan McFall, Senior Adults Pastor stan.mcfall@calvarychurch.us Bridging Through the effective reuse of donated items, Bridging improves lives by providing quality furniture and household goods to those transitioning out of homelessness and poverty. To date, Bridging has served over 80,000 households and currently operates out of two locations Bloomington and Roseville. Bridging serves over 14,000 people in need every year, including 7,000 youth and children. On average, Bridging distributes 14 semi-truck loads of furniture and household goods to 80 households every week. They continue to accept quality, gently used items, and by doing so, diverts 200,000 pounds of inventory from the landfill each week. The impact Bridging has made in the lives of local people in need, the environment, and its volunteers is monumental. Through support from individuals and businesses throughout the community, Bridging continues to bring hope and stability to thousands of local households. QUALITY OF ITEMS ACCEPTED Quality, gently used and new items accepted. All items must be clean and in good working condition (fullyfunctioning). Free of rips, stains and/or pet hair. Not sure if you should donate an item? Ask yourself if you would feel comfortable giving it to a friend or family member. Still have questions? Visit bridging.org/index.php/get-involved/ donate-goods. Wendy Erickson, Volunteer Coordinator Roseville wendy.erickson@bridging.org Care Kits for the Homeless Creating care kits is one way to involve your entire family in caring for homeless people. Here are some tips for creating your own care kits. FEED THE NEED Include personal care items such as toothbrush, toothpaste, deodorant, and tissues. Snack items such as granola bars, crackers with cheese, applesauce, and bottled water are usually appreciated. PROVIDE WARMTH Add items like thermal boot socks, gloves, scarves, and hats to your care kit during the brutal winter months. FEED THE SOUL Write an encouraging note, with a scripture verse to give comfort. Provide a local resource list. Both of these items are available at the Info Centers at both campuses. Pray that God would lead you to someone in need. If you come across a person on a street corner asking for assistance, you ll have a care kit ready to share. (It is NOT recommended that you get out of the car.) 4 5
Feed My Starving Children Feed My Starving Children (FMSC) strives to eliminate starvation throughout the world by packing simple, sustainable meals. Donations given by people like you fund the meal ingredients. Volunteers like you hand-pack the meals. Meals are donated to FMSC food partners around the world, where kids are fed and lives are saved. Calvary Minnesota and Calvary Haiti are official partners with FMSC. We ship an annual container to Haiti and distribute the food to the 16 Calvary partner churches including our sister church in Delmas and the churches in Pernier and Cotin. To schedule a group session, visit fmsc.org. Food Shelves Food shelves provide quality, healthy food for our neighbors in need, helping them be self-sufficient, stable and successful. Bring canned food items throughout the year to the collection bins on each campus. Donations go to Keystone Community Food Shelf in Roseville and White Bear Emergency Food Shelf. There are also opportunities to volunteer at these food shelves. Volunteers make a difference as they help their neighbors. Vonn Dornbush, Impact Ministry Pastor vonn.dornbush@calvarychurch.us Hospitality Center for Chinese The Hospitality Center for Chinese (HCC) desires to share Christ s love through making Chinese students, scholars, and their families feel at home in the USA. The Center provides a welcoming environment, practical resources, and helps students develop relationships with Americans. The goal is to make their transition to living in Minnesota as smooth as possible. Activities at HCC cultivate a community of friendship, understanding, and cultural exchange. Founded in 1992, HCC is located at China Place, across the street from the University of Minnesota, on the St. Paul Campus. Host a Chinese student in your home at the holidays or throughout the summer. Pick up new students from the airport. Help prepare and serve dinner for Chinese students and their families. Kim Sollie, Coordinator for Volunteer Engagement kim@hcchinese.org Monday Night Meals Invite your friends and neighbors to this FREE meal for Calvary attenders and the community held on the 2 nd Monday of every month at the Roseville Campus. We always welcome more people to serve and build relationships with our community. Kim Sawtell, Food Coordinator
New Life Family Services At New Life Family Services, we believe each person should have the ability to receive physical, emotional, and spiritual support as they face pregnancy-related situations and circumstances. We walk beside each client offering them love and support to make informed and educated decisions in their time of crisis and need. It is through this care that we are seeing God change hearts, save lives, build families, and restore hope. Client support roles are only available during New Life Family Service business hours. More information can be found at Ministry support roles vary and can be matched to volunteer availability and time commitment ability. Examples include donating baby items, distributing brochures in your area and more. Volunteer Coordinator Refugee Life Ministry Thousands of refugees arrive in Minnesota from all over the world. Calvary works with Arrive Ministries and adopts a new family each year. Refugee Life Ministry (RLM) volunteers have the privilege of welcoming them and walking alongside them as they adjust to life in Minnesota, finding new hope, new beginnings and new friends. Provide rides to and from appointments for families. Help with finding refugees new employment and/or provide English tutoring. Collect new and lightly-used children s books to help families improve literacy. Purchase and/or bring furniture, food and clothing to a new family s home. Anita Dualeh, Calvary Church Volunteer anitadualeh@gmail.com Salvation Army The Salvation Army exists to meet human need wherever, whenever, and however they can. They assist approximately 25 million Americans every year. Every program they offer is rooted in their passion to serve God by serving the lost, the vulnerable, the needy, the poor, the hurting, the helpless and the hopeless. Bring gently used clothing, house-hold items, and winter coats to the drop box located in our parking lot at the Roseville Campus. Vonn Dornbush, Impact Ministry Pastor vonn.dornbush@calvarychurch.us Some refugees come from Christian backgrounds, know Jesus, and want to be connected with a church community. Other refugees have never understood the truth of who He is and others have never heard of Him at all. Those involved in Refugee Life Ministry have the opportunity to welcome newly-arrived refugee families and show them the love of Christ through practical service and loving relationships. 8 9
The Sandwich Project Each year, various organizations put together programs for Thanksgiving and Christmas to help feed, clothe and take care of those in economic need. An honest question, pondered by those who participate is what happens the other 364 days of the year? The Sandwich Project was established with these other days in mind. They feed about 4,500 people per week through various shelters and food shelves! You can help with just a small amount of time and a small amount of money that makes a huge difference. A journey of a thousand miles begins with just one step and The Sandwich Project can get you started. How it works: Fill out a request form online at Purchase supplies through Coborns Delivers or purchase the meat, cheese, bread, and bags yourself. Assemble the sandwiches. (Follow detailed instructions online.) Drop off sandwiches at one of the drop sites. Be sure to notify the drop site location of your donations to come prior to your delivery. Bonnie Johnson, Ministry Assistant bonnie.johnson@calvarychurch.us Union Gospel Mission Twin Cities Union Gospel Mission Twin Cities (UGMTC) offers help for the homeless, poor, and addicted in the Twin Cities through meals, shelter, recovery, education and job training programs. Hundreds of volunteers make the work of Union Gospel Mission possible each week. If you are ready to give someone a hand up, there are many ways to get involved. Ongoing opportunities include mentors, Bible study leaders, drivers, serving meals, and many more. Go online at volunteer to see a complete list and fill out a volunteer application. Group opportunities include fine dining experience, serve dessert, and sort incoming donations. This is a great way to serve with your small group. Josh Windham, Volunteer Services Manager jwindham@ugmtc.org VOA Residential Re-entry Center Residential Re-entry Centers (RRCs) have been operated by Volunteers of America Minnesota since The facilities provide residential re-entry services for men and women who are allowed to complete part of their prison sentences in the community. This affords them the opportunity to restore community ties, obtain employment, and pay a portion of their care and supervision to the state or federal jurisdictions who have authority over them for the period of their stay in the RRC. Ongoing opportunities include mentors, drivers, and many more. Group opportunities include both indoor and outdoor projects. Cheryl Turitto, Program Services Coordinator cheryl.turitto@voa.org 10 11
