Director Feg Henkel Director Dave Michaels Director Bruce Dill Director Bill Heffernan President Emeritus Mike Bryant-Chief Range Officer Dan Sauro Range Volunteers NRA Chief Range Safety Officer Ray Radank/Feg Henkel Range Safety Officer Tom & Joyce Schulke Gerry Hickey, Bill Heffernan John & Theresa Griffin Rich Brown, Fred Bernstein Dave Michaels, John Thomas, Dan Sauro, Mike Morris George Norwood, Jumbo Carlton Ladies Class Joyce Schulke The President s Corner Well another quarterly meeting is in the history books now; it took place at OSA on Sunday 9/11. As most of you know Billy Woods, Marion County candidate for Sheriff was our invited guest speaker and he did not disappoint those of us that showed up in the heat. Billy Woods gave a nice talk on his background and qualifications and there was a good question and answer session when he was done with his speech. Special thanks to our own Dan Sauro for talking to Billy Woods and inviting him out to speak. FOOD, FOOD, FOOD, nobody was disappointed with the menu this meeting and there was plenty to go around not like the last meeting that ran short on burgers, hot dogs and sausage. We also had lots of ham, Shrimp, Brisket, two kinds of potato salad, coleslaw, and Jerry s famous macaroni salad and of course Schwans ice cream products for dessert. Thanks to everybody that helped with the cooking and serving, this would not have happened without you. Also thank you to all that took leftovers home.victoria did a fantastic job with her photography and a link to a photo slide show of the meeting can be found elsewhere in this newsletter that was put together with Victoria s photos and set to music by our own Feg Henkel the OSA treasurer and I.T. specialist. Good job Feg, I can t wait for everyone to see it. OSA%20Membership%20Mtg%209_11_2016/ OSA%20Membership%20Mtg%209_11_2016.mov 2
3 As I type this out on my computer my cat Moe lies on my desk facing the screen and keeps a watchful eye on me checking for punctuation and spelling errors. Moe has no problem putting her paws on the keyboard. Now when I have Grammar, spelling or punctuation errors I can blame the cat. NOBODY BELIEVES THIS!! Our quarterly raffle was more fun than usual and we had more participation this time with the items that were donated. Among the items; we had six handgun cases, two easy fold up and carry director s chairs, plus the grand prize was a 43 high definition TV. We also had three multifunction flashlights to fit in your gear bag and four bulk packs of 22 ammo but the flashlights and ammo never made it to the table, they will be here for the December meeting. 6 The Firing Line OSA Range Safety 1. ALWAYS keep the gun pointed in a safe direction. 2. ALWAYS keep your finger off the trigger until ready to shoot. 3. ALWAYS keep the gun unloaded until ready to use. One of the things I talked about at the meeting, and has been the subject of many meetings and newsletter articles, was the topic of target height placement. I have made it a priority this year during new member orientation to put more effort and time in explaining and demonstrating the importance of proper target height placement and why it is needed. I told the membership in attendance that the effort is starting to pay off because we Range Safety Officers are seeing fewer target height issues. The topic is emphasized New Member Orientation both in the classroom portion and on the firing line during the shooting session (Thank You Bill). Bill and the other board members along with the RSO s that come out to help with orientation also reinforce target height and have the new members set up their own targets the first time. Prior to this year the board members did the target placement. This is a serious issue, but I do not want to over regulate the members, however the range needs to be safe for all to enjoy. In talking to most of you casually at the range most all of you are happy with the fact that the range is now full time Range Safety Officers. This is something that has taken a significant period of time to implement, across several OSA Administrations. we must remember that safety is of paramount importance. 6
7 Special Acknowledgement I want to acknowledge all the board members, past and present that played a big part in accomplishing this task, it was, and is, a daunting task. Mike Bryant, past president and longest serving board member in the history of the club. His impeccable records keeping was invaluable in working with the accountant and the IRS, non-profit files both state and federal. Past items that were voted on by the previous boards. Board s, etc, etc. Dan Sauro, two time past president and # two longest serving board member. Current Tuesday afternoon rifle range safety officer. He also supplied his records combined with Mike s was invaluable to the original Attorney that provided and wrote the 22 page brief that was ed to the membership outlining the previous boards miss deeds and along with Mike s volumes of paperwork were a great help in attempting to rectify past misdeeds. Feg Henkel, current Treasurer and club I.T. specialist, produces all the ID badges and processes the membership, keeps all the club info current in our software, editor and producer of the newsletter (I m the writer) does the RSO work schedule, expert analysis and use of our club software, without his help this could not have been accomplished. Allen Densky, past secretary, he was relentless in research and records keeping. His business experience helped keep us on the right track. Rich D Ambroso, past treasurer and winner of the December 2013 Treasurer elections, without whose help it would have been next to impossible to right the OSA ship that was sinking fast due to past board miss deeds. His past gun club treasurer experience was a huge shot in the arm for OSA. Tom Schulke, served temporarily as a board member and brought a sense of calmness to the board when all the fist pounding and shouting was going on in early 2014 and an excellent orator. He is also part of the instructing team for our Wednesday ladies class, new member orientation instructor, volunteer NRA Range Safety Officer and firearms instructor. Bob Sabitino, Director that worked with his friends and crew and presented the proposal and built the new replacement rifle benches used on the pistol range and now the rifle range. Jerry Hickey, current vice president, he is our Sergeant at arms; he carries the microphone at the meetings for the members to use. A major volunteer as RSO for both the pistol and rifle range and serves a mean macaroni salad at all the quarterly meetings. Instructor for new member orientation and ladies class. John Bentley, current secretary, does all the clubs monthly meeting minutes and minutes for the quarterly meetings, general paperwork, Gunsmith, volunteer cook, setup and cleanup, new member orientation instructor. 7
8 Bruce Dill, current director and member of the Fraternal Order of Police, he provides much needed help with new member orientation training and much needed cooking help and setup and cleaning, providing me much relief. Bill Heffernan, current director, controls all our various projects and maintenance that are on going around OSA, volunteer RSO, event director for the Villages and monthly IDPA shoots. Bill is always looking for better ways to maintain safety and improvements. David Michaels, current director, gets involved with all the projects around OSA, volunteer RSO for both the rifle and pistol ranges, new member orientation instructor, took on the project of finding a insulation contractor to do the rifle range canopy and getting them back to maintain it. We have many more volunteers and donators for OSA that provide their time on work crews, RSO volunteers, cooking help and clean up, maintenance and odd jobs around OSA, if I tried to name everybody that donates I would inevitably leave some out plus it would take volumes to list with their accomplishments. So, a heart felt THANK YOU to every body for your interest and participation in OSA, this is your club and I am proud to lead it. 8
