1 Chief Okemos Sportsman s Club P. O. Box 375, Dimondale, Michigan or visit us on Facebook NEWSLETTER Vol. 28 No. 07 July 2015 President s Note COSC has been trying to start a Junior Rimfire discipline this year and so far we have had no response. This program is intended for younger kids who are first time shooters. They will learn firearm safety along with proper gun handling, cleaning, sighting and a positive attitude for the shooting sports. This is a free program for all age shooters as is our other Junior Programs. Please call Ralph Batten at or Keith Wright at Eight days in June the State Police Academy used our west 25-yd range to train new recruits. They followed all our range rules and were very respectful of Club property. They brought their own targets and target holders and cleaned the range and Club House every day. Two of the instructors will be joining the Club at the Open House. I am glad I had the chance to work with them; it was a very positive experience. As always, if you have any questions please call me. Keith Wright RSO Thank you We would like to thank all the Club RSOs who helped manage the ranges during the training programs with the DNR and MSP cadets. Your efforts and time were greatly appreciated in making a safe and organized training environment. Thank you again. Duane Whaley & Keith Wright Junior Sporting Rimfire..from your Membership Committee Thank you to all our members who attended the annual Open House last month. We hope you, your family and friends enjoyed the activities. Thank you, too, for all the volunteers who stepped up to make this event such a success. After checking the Club out, numerous people joined by attending the on-the-spot orientation. Others made application and will attend their orientation at a later date. We welcome all our newest members. Let s get to know them by attending a regular Membership meeting. The next one is Monday, July 13, at 7:30 pm. See you there!

2 NRA Instruction This year we have 6 classes and 6 Personal Protection in the Home classes already scheduled. Some new classes we need to schedule are Personal Protection Outside the Home and Defensive Shotgun Courses. We have about 10 new instructors who have received their new training this year and need to be in the rotation. We would also like to have RSOs for range work with our classes this year. If you can help, please contact Duane Whaley at C.P.L. Classes We have classes scheduled for July 11-12, These classes cover and Personal Protection in the Home. The commitment for you is two weekends to receive a proper education in safe gun handling. Cost for members is $75.00 and $ for non-member. Please contact Duane Whaley at for more information and reservations. Junior Sporter Rimfire COSC is starting up a new and exciting junior program.junior Sporter Rimfire. It is going to replace the Junior Rimfire that used single shot 22s to incorporate semi-auto 22s. This is a new opportunity to get our next generation of shooters started in protecting our 2nd Amendment rights. Anyone interested, please contact me at and leave a message. Thanks. Ralph Batten Cowboy Action Shooting The schedule for Cowboy Action this year is: July 25th 9am August 15th 9am September 15th 9am October17th 9am We would like to invite new shooters to join us and learn more about Cowboy Action Shooting. This is a shooting sport geared for all ages, so please, bring the whole family. We will be happy to talk and show you how easy you can join our posse. For more info contact Evil Duane at

3 Trap Shooting Trap Shooting at COSC is in full swing. hours are Sunday noon to 3pm and Thursday 5pm to 8pm. Cost is still $4.00 for members and $5.00 for non-members. We encourage members who would like to learn trap shooting to come out and join us. We have NRA instructors who can teach you and answer your questions. Contact Duane Whaley at for more information. Ladies Ladies Ladies (LLL) LLL is open to all women, members and non-members alike. Meetings are on the first and third Tuesday of each month promptly starting at 6:30pm. Bring $3 to cover.22 ammo. Cost for LLL is kept to a reasonable rate thanks to grants from the NRA and Friends of NRA. You are welcome to bring a higher caliber gun, and if you do, you will need to bring your own ammo for your gun. Your protection and comfort are important. Dress accordingly for the weather. Closed toe shoes are a must. Bring a jacket, bug spray, a drink, and ear & eye protection. You can learn more about good ear & eye protection from our instructors. Tiny foam ear buds are available if you don't have ear protection. Contact Sharon Whaley or Stephani Davis Plates Plates is every Wednesday at 5pm, weather permitting. The guys will be available earlier for help, if needed. Come on down and give it a try whether you are an experienced shooter or a brand new one. Putting lead on steel is always fun. Archery The range will be open every day to members and guests. Cost will remain $5.00 per round for members and $10.00 per round for non-members.

4 Club House Rentals Need a hall for all the summer activities that are sure to come? The Club House is available to members at the discounted rate of $300 with an additional $50 deposit. (The rate for a nonmember is $550 with additional $200 deposit.) You must be a member in good standing and have been a member for at least a year. (Current) Rentals start at noon on Friday until noon on Sunday. Many members and non-members have rented the Club House for weddings, receptions, anniversaries, graduation open houses, and birthdays. WIFI is available, too! Kitchen facilities are included which provide you with a six-burner gas stove and oven, a refrigerator, 100-cup coffee pot, and a microwave. There are approximately 80 tables and 340 chairs for your use as well. For questions, more information or a rental booking, please call Dates 8/22/ Club Rental 9/20/ Raffle Drawing Raffle Ticket sales for the Raffle are going strong. At this point we have sold about $20,000 worth of tickets. This means we have covered all of our expenses and are now making money for your Club. Please return your tickets or get the stubs and money back to us. If you need more tickets, see Bill Shepard or Pat Cavanaugh at the Membership and/or Board of Directors meetings. If you cannot sell or buy these tickets yourself, please return them as soon as possible. We are running out of tickets to give to people to sell. This month, we will be giving away a gun safe as a seller s bonus. We will continue to have seller s bonus drawings at the Membership meetings in August and September. If you get your money in by the July 13th Membership meeting, you will be entered in all of the July through September seller s give-aways. Note: Because we are almost sold out of raffle tickets, we will not be selling tickets at any more gun shows this year. This Raffle is a big source of funds for your Club. Please help support your Club so it can keep providing you with quality programs. Remember, the sooner ALL of the tickets are sold the sooner you will stop hearing Pat and me harping about tickets at each meeting. Thanks. Bill & Pat
