While I transition to the role of Past President, I am reflecting on our collaborations for progress over the last year. With our visit to Capital Hill in July, we advocated for our clients and our profession with Senators and Representatives who provide our legislative voice. These efforts will continue again this July! I want to take this opportunity to thank those of you who serve this organization with dedication and competence. Behind the scenes, Dr. Jennifer Barna, Dr. Brian Wlazelek, Dr. Michelle Bruno, Dr. Holly Branthoover, and Dr. J. Otis Smith have performed endless tasks that serve to maintain and improve the functioning of PCA. Their contributions are far too many to list here, but suffice it to say that their work for this organization, often on a daily basis, is the reason that PCA exists. We have engaged in multiple projects this year devoted to increasing membership, performing advocacy for state and national legislation as well as representation on the state licensure board. J. Otis provided leadership for continued exploration of our U M M E R management services agreement with ACA and now, more recently, alternatives for obtaining administrative services elsewhere. We have spent significant energy over the past year increasing our visibility and awareness of the political realities of our jobs. We know that social workers and psychologists have long standing political liaisons in the legislature who represent their interests on professional issues. It has become clear to the PCA Board members that counselors need to be actively represented in the political process if we are to remain professionally relevant. To that end, we distributed a marketing letter to 500 of our LPC colleagues in the state who are not members. We highlighted the many mutual advantages of membership in PCA and the critical nature of their participation. In my year as President, I gained new appreciation for how volunteer organizations operate. They operate best when many people contribute their voice and their talents so that the work is shared. It has been my pleasure to witness the service of many individuals who are PCA leadership in action. Ms. Minna Davis Continued on page 2

Dr. Mark Kenney has maintained the organization s archives for years and is continually able to locate data details and answer procedural questions at the drop of a hat. Dr. Judy Bookhamer consistently participates in Board meetings to be sure that the voice of PA school counselors is represented. Ms. Abby Doughtery, Dr. Krista Malott, and Ms. Paula Kauffman Oberly responded to the call for leadership and stepped up to new positions on the Board this year. Dr. Paul Datti is transitioning from PALGBTIC President to 2013 conference co-chair with Dr. Amy Banner who hit the ground running as a conference co-chair with Ms. Jennifer Barch in Dr. Janet Muse-Burke produced a jumbo edition of JPCA. Ms. Connie Kramer transitioned to the role of Professional Development Chair and quietly demonstrates professionalism and efficiency as she insures that we all receive credit for our continuing education contact hours. Dr. Ken McCurdy, Dr. Holly Branthoover, and Ms. Minna Davis continue to coordinate the PA Supervision Registry which is a premiere service to our members. Mr. Brandon Harper and Mr. Eric Rhodes sacrificed their own time and worked the entire 2012 conference registration. These are a few of the many unsung heroes of PCA who provide much needed assistance so that our organization can flourish. On a personal note, I would like to thank my colleagues, Dr. David Tobin, Dr. Ken McCurdy, and Dr. Tim Coppock for providing me with moral and practical support throughout my term as President. Special thanks to Dr. Tobin for his incredible energy and expertise as the drum circle master. Without their encouragement, I would have been poorly equipped for this role. There is much work to be done. I leave this office with a call to service to Pennsylvania counselors! I trust that you will pass this call on to some of your colleagues who may be among the 90% of LPCs in Pennsylvania who do not belong to PCA. We are only as powerful as we make ourselves. Legislation and policies that affect our clients and our livelihood are frequently introduced at the state and federal level. It is up to us whether we have representation at the table when decisions are made. We are relying upon you to maintain your membership, find a way to contribute to the good of the organization, and communicate the urgency of our unity to other counselors or counseling students who have yet to join. From the desk of the Awards Committee : Nominations to honor the hard work, commitment, and dedication of Pennsylvania counselors, students, and programs are now being accepted. Help us give a few of our unsung heroes the recognition they deserve. Please consider nominating a colleague, program, or graduate student for an award. The award categories are listed below. Winners will be announced at the conference luncheon on Saturday, November 9, PCA Eminent Practitioner Award Awarded to an outstanding professional counselor for service to the profession; nominees do NOT need to be PCA members. PCA Lifetime Achievement Award Awarded to a PCA member who is a State of Pennsylvania resident and who has demonstrated outstanding dedication, service, and/or achievement in professional counseling. PCA Outstanding Administrator Award Awarded to an outstanding institutional administrator who has demonstrated support of the counseling profession PCA Outstanding Counselor Education Program Award Awarded to an outstanding professional counseling program in the State of Pennsylvania. Be a part of your state chapter of ACA As I transition to the role of PCA President, I am grateful for having had the opportunity to work with and be mentored by so many dedicated professionals in our organization. It is amazing how much goes on behind the scenes to keep an organization operating. I look forward to the next year as I continuing to build relationships with PCA members and counseling professionals in the state. Looking ahead, I am excited by some changes that will be introduced at our annual conference. Stay tuned for conference announcements over the next months and please plan now to join your friends and colleagues at our annual gathering in State College this fall (November 8-10). Please note that our executive team was able to negotiate lower room rates at the conference for both students and regular members. The keynote address at the conference will be given by Dr. Bradley Erford, President of the American Counseling Association and author of numerous books, journal articles, and assessment measures. A recent influential event in my professional life was participation in the Institute for Leadership Training offered by the American Counseling Association last summer. My involvement in lobbying as part of the Day on the Hill during the institute underscored for me the value of participation in legislative advocacy. There are many legislative issues of importance to counselors in our state and nation that require active attention. For example PCA, along with other state branches, is supporting ACA in efforts to enlist cosponsors of The Seniors Mental Health Access Improvement Act of 2013 aimed at expanding Medicare reimbursement to include counselors. Hopefully, counseling professionals across the state who share an interest in these vital practice issues will support PCA in organizing more active advocacy for our profession. 5 P C A I N C P A G E 5 From the desk of PACAC: Each year, PACAC experiences a transition, from one President to another. This year, the baton will be passed to Lauren Ostrowski, MA, LPC, NCC, DCC. Lauren is everything you could hope for as a president of PACAC. She is a wonderful mentor, very nurturing, understanding, and at times she can be humorous. Laruen is a dynamic supervisor and dedicated servant of the counseling profession. I was honored and privileged to serve in the position of President of PACAC for this past year and anticipate an extraordinary and successful year with your new president. I am asking for a favor of the members of PACAC. In some ways I feel PACAC is one of the best kept secrets from those who could benefit the most. We need to increase our numbers and involvement. More members and more involvement will give PACAC more power of influence. It also means that those who join agree to abide by the ACA Code of Ethics, something that points to professionalism and protection of the public. We are also in need of a Presidentelect. 6 P A G E 6 P C A I N C From the desk of PAMHCA: On April 5, PAMHCA and PACES held a networking event for graduate students at Chestnut Hill College in Philadelphia. More than five graduate programs in southeast Pennsylvania were represented. Students expressed their gratitude for the opportunity to network, expand their knowledge of ACA, PCA, PAMHCA, and the licensure process. They offered suggestions on how they could be better served and counselor identity could be better promoted. There were many questions regarding the licensure process. PCA President-Elect, Brian Wlazelek assisted PAMHCA President, Minna Davis in providing clarification of the NCE exam required for licensure, supervision for licensure, and continuing education credits required to maintain licensure. Students were informed that booklets were available through the Pennsylvania Licensure Board and that both PCA and PAMHCA websites provide relevant resource information and links important to students; for example, LPC supervisory registry, legislation, licensure and available job sites. There was extensive discussion regarding counselor identity and affiliation with counseling associations. It was recognized that counseling is at a disadvantage as a profession because it does not have programs at an undergraduate level as psychology and social work do. Students offered that it would be beneficial to be provided information early in their master s programs to establish a better understanding of counselor identity. They also opined that continued knowledge was necessary throughout the master s program. The meeting included discussion of a continuing collaboration between PCA, PAMHCA, and PACES to provide graduate students across the state: A list-serve to answer their questions as they come up Periodic workshops like this one. One of the most significant responsibilities of the PCA Past President is overseeing the nominations and elections process for the upcoming year. This Spring, elections for the offices of President-Elect and Secretary were held. PCA is very fortunate to have such qualified, dedicated professionals on the ballot. Join me in welcoming our newly elected PCA leadership for : President Elect: Dr. Michelle Bruno Michelle Bruno, PhD, LPC, is an associate professor in the Department of Counseling at Indiana University of Pennsylvania. Dr. Bruno has served as Secretary for the Pennsylvania Counseling Association (PCA) since 2008, and also served as Professional Development Chair for PCA from Dr. Bruno s record of involvement in PCA has allowed her to gain an understanding of how to best service PCA members and Pennsylvania professional counselors, how to advocate for and represent counselors and counselors-in-training, and how to work in collaboration and partnership with other professional organizations to further the vision of PCA. As the PCA president elect, Dr. Bruno plans to continue mentoring new professionals, strengthen the voice of PCA to contribute to state mental health care and education legislation, build unity and collaboration among Pennsylvania counseling branches, promote research among our members to gain a better understanding of best practices in counseling and counselor education. She seeks to identify opportunities for increased participation, and networking opportunities for members and PA counselors, and to strengthen student involvement in leadership and participation within PCA. Moving from secretary to President-Elect will afford the opportunity to learn from current PCA officers while strengthening leadership skills. Through PCA, Dr. Bruno has been provided with incredible opportunities to collaborate with exemplary colleagues from across the state. Moving into the president -elect role will enhance these established relationships in a way that will continue to advance the field of professional counseling. 9 P C A I N C P A G E 9 Nominations & Elections Committee continued: Dr. Bruno s research and scholarly interests include trauma and resiliency in adolescent girls, relational aggression, cyberbullying, wellness and balance in life, mental health literacy in adolescents, and depression and suicide among college students. She is an active scholar evidenced by her professional publications and professional workshops at state, regional, and national counseling conferences. She has worked hard to mentor students in research and continues to collect data, publish, and present with counselors in training. Her passion for work with girls is recognized in her involvement in the evidenced-based empowerment program Ruling OureXperiences (ROX). She was recently awarded a $45, grant from the FISA Foundation to expand this program for adolescent girls. Dr. Bruno is an active member of ACA, ASCA, and ACES. In the university setting, Dr. Bruno is the student advisor for Chi Sigma Iota and a member of the Research Institute Advisory Board, Safe Zone program, and College of Educational and Educational Technology Research committee. Linda Thompson Secretary: Linda Thompson, LPC Linda has been an LPC since 1990, recently relocating here from Missouri. She was instrumental in writing and getting passed the LPC and MFT legislation in Missouri. Linda has been a director of Counselor Education programs for 8 years, and is currently serving as Director of the Counseling Psychology program at Holy Family University in Philadelphia. Linda has worked as a therapist and/or administrator in managed care, community mental health, residential treatment, private practice, psychiatric inpatient. She also served in a gubernatorial appointment under three governors as director of senior and disability services for the state of Missouri and Women s and Children s treatment coordinator for Alcohol and Drug Administration. She is very active in ACA and AAMFT membership and is excited about transferring her service and knowledge to her new Pennsylvania home. The Editor invites articles that address the interest, theory, scientific research, and innovative programs and practices of counselors. Recently published articles have discussed such topics as diversity, crisis intervention, supervision, alcohol use, and counseling approaches. Manuscripts should be approximately 20 pages in length and adhere to APA style. The PCA Supervision Registry is a free service that provides information about supervision opportunities to all PCA members. The Registry is a posting on the PCA website which lists information for counselors offering supervision services. The Registry provides a central posting location for Licensed Professional Counselors (LPC) (and other qualified licensed mental health professionals) to provide supervision to counselors-in-training seeking the LPC credential. Supervisors who want to be in the Registry must be PCA members. The Registry also serves as a resource for those counselors-in-training seeking LPC supervision to locate potential supervisors in their area. The registry is an Internet Only Service. Registration forms for Supervisors are in the Members Only Section of the PCA website. Now is the time to take advantage of the Supervision Registry!
