2 Winter at Cornerstone It s hard to believe how quickly our tenth anniversary year has passed! We ve had an amazing year filled with great programs, offered professional services to a record number of clients, and have been blessed to receive gifts that will allow to continue into the future. On behalf of myself and our staff, we know that we have areas to grow, and we would like your help in providing feedback on where we could improve. Cornerstone has posted a short survey on our website, and anyone can take it, whether you came to Cleveland or Columbus for our grief counseling, support groups, professional education series or if you are a supporter...we want to hear from you! Cornerstone was built to help those grieving in our community, and we want to be sure that the community needs are being met. Completed surveys will be entered in a drawing for a gift card. You can take it by visiting: cornerstoneofhope.org/page/survey Cornerstone to be featured on Animal Planet s Treehouse Masters TABLE OF CONTENTS Page 3 Page 4 Page 5 Page 6 Page 7 Page 8-9 Page Cornerstone is also excited to announce the opening of Lisa s Butterfly Treehouse, dedicated in loving memory to Lisa Kurtz Luciano. Volunteering Most of all, thank you for your support of Cornerstone, and may Development News you and your family have a safe and blessed holiday season! Groups and Programs Columbus Updates Life on the Rock On August 29th, Mark, Christi, and Taylor joined Fr. Anthony and Doug Barry for a special interview on EWTN s Life on the Rock television show. The Tripodi s shared their experience of struggle after losing their son, Bobby, and their decision to turn their pain into purpose by founding Cornerstone. To view the video, please visit ewtn.com/tv/live/lifeontherock.asp The video is labeled Cornerstone of Hope. TAPS From October 4-6, Cornerstone welcomed more than 200 individuals grieving the loss of a loved one who served in a current military conflict through a TAPS (Tragedy Assistance Program for Survivors) Weekend. Families came from five states to support one another, through sharing stories, grief sessions, and spending time at the Survivor Seminar. Children participated in their own Good Grief Camp, where they met other children who lost a military parent, sibling or caregiver. It was a weekend to honor those who have made the ultimate sacrifice for our country. Cornerstone is looking forward to hosting this weekend again. To learn more about TAPS, please visit taps.org. 2 cornerstone of hope a center for grieving children, teens & adults

3 Sharing the Hope by Giving Back Several families that were touched by Cornerstone s mission have heard their calling to give back. We want to honor their stories of creating programs and events to ensure that their loved one is not forgotten. They have generously given these proceeds to Cornerstone so that we may continue to serve the many new families who walk through our door every week. These are a few of their stories. Run Amuck Run Amuck is a race hosted by CrossFit Independence owned by LIsa and Joel Woods. Competitors complete a 5k that incorporates the challenges of CrossFit moves in fun, party atmosphere. Since it started in 2012, it has raised $7,000 for Cornerstone. Thank you to all of the CrossFitters who participated and created their own personal fundraising page to help us raise additional funds. Martin J. Coyne, Jr. Foundation The Martin J. Coyne, Jr. Foundation Golf Outing is hosted by the Coyne family to honor their dad, who suddenly passed away in Martin was a tremendous father, colleague, well respected in the community and loved to play golf. His family felt that a golf outing in his memory was the best tribute for him. They chose Cornerstone because they wanted other families who experience a sudden loss to feel supported. Over the past three years, they have raised $24,000 for Cornerstone. Little Helping Hands Memorial 5k and Walk The Teconchuk family lost their young son suddenly, and wanted a way to make sure he is never forgotten. They started a memorial race that in its first year had more than 500 attendees and raised $7,000 for Cornerstone of Hope. This race brought the community together and included a memorial balloon race. Mary and George along with their friend Nikki generously presented the race proceeds at Cornerstone of Hope s Clambake. They invite you to join them next year for their 2nd Annual Race and Walk. Joe Nemecek Golf Outing raises $6,500 After losing his father at a young age Jeff Nemecek, owner of Pure Merchandise in Medina, wanted to create a fund to help inspire children and teens to go after their dreams. He created the N-Able Fund through Cornerstone to reach out to youth that have had a loss and help build their confidence in becoming young entrepreneurs. He is a role model for showing how after a loss, you can find the drive to help others. The Littlejohn Family Becky and Willie Littlejohn experienced the unimaginable when their daughter, Megan, died in a tragic car accident. Desiring to honor and memorialize Meggie, they started Meggie s Foundation. Their gift of $1,500 is being used in our support group series for parents who have lost a young child. The Littlejohn s were also the feature story of this year s Annual Fund Campaign; to read their story and how Cornerstone of Hope continues to benefit their family visit cornerstoneofhope.org. We are blessed to have such wonderful support! If you are interested in learning more about how you can give back, please contact us. 3

5 Inspiration After a Traumatic Loss When someone has lost a loved one in a traumatic way, it can affect daily activities and a person may not feel safe in their environment. Trauma compromises the brain s executive functioning so learning and retaining new information becomes extremely difficult. Often, a taste, sound, smell, texture or a visual cue will trigger a person and they may feel terror, helplessness and re-experience the trauma as if it were happening all over again. Therefore, they may avoid activities they used to participate in. Children, teens and adults are all susceptible to trauma from the death of a loved one, even if their death was not sudden. Gianna making an art therapy collage in her school during a session with Laura. Cornerstone of Hope has recently seen an increase in traumatic cases, and we are building our staff to be able to serve this growing need. We offer traumatic loss individual counseling and support groups that are specifically designed to assist people who have experienced loss to murder, suicide and accidental overdose. As with all of our groups, these are free of charge. For clients needing one on one support, Laura Serazin, Registered Art Therapist, MA, CTC-S (Certified Trauma Consultant Supervisor) and Misty Ramos, Art Therapist, PC, CTC, (Licensed Trauma Assessment Consultant) have been certified by TLC (The National Institute for Trauma and Loss in Children) and specialize in helping children, teens and young adults who have experienced trauma. They utilize Art Therapy at Cornerstone of Hope, and bring the services to grieving youth in their school if they are unable to visit Cornerstone. They recently co-presented at TLC s educational panel for professionals After the Violence: Lessons Learned from Sandy Hook on November 14th with other professionals from New Town and Virginia Tech. Bob Pickard, PC, another Cornerstone clinician, is trained in trauma and uses EMDR (Eye Movement Desensitization and Reprocessing Therapy) to help clients re-process their trauma. It s like I m back to my old self... but better, stronger said one of Bob s trauma clients, Mayra, who created this piece of artwork about her experience. To help build up resources after a crisis in the schools and communities, Laura and Misty along with Cornerstone Columbus staff, Marissa Aquilino, PCC and Alison Niedermier, MSW, LSW, are trained to help those affected by a crisis process their grief, provide support and offer additional resources when needed. Laura has trained the Western Cuyahoga County, Lorain County, and Columbus School Crisis Response Teams. If you are a clinician interested in learning more about these techniques, Cornerstone of Hope offers several CEU s throughout the year on these topics including one on EMDR on January 23rd. To view a schedule of topics, please visit ceu-registration or if you are a licensed mental health professional or clergy and would like to join or develop your own district s School Crisis Response Team, please call Cornerstone s Cleveland or Columbus office for training dates. To learn more about receiving individual counseling or group support, please call our offices. My soul is free from the pain and grieving. I see the world differently. There is color in my soul again not darkness. I m not afraid of the rain or thinking about where it all started. My faith is stronger. 5

This type of non-verbal communication will help them explore their emotions in a supportive environment. Music, journaling, drawing, body movement and painting will be used. In-School Groups We are once again offering in school grief support groups for students of all ages who have experienced the death of a loved one. The support group is designed to allow students to come together and receive age appropriate grief support in the familiarity of their own school. School support groups are a safe way to share feelings, find ways to cope with loss and build friendships. Grief counselors trained to help grieving children and young adults utilize expressive arts, games, stories and discussions to facilitate group. To register your school for a support group or for additional details, please contact Alison at or Alison@cornerstoneofhope.org. School Crisis Response Team Each school has their own crisis plan, however, the challenge is often having enough trained and qualified people to meet the need after a sudden loss of a student or faculty member. It can be difficult for one or two counselors to handle the counseling needs of an entire school community so the Crisis Response Team allows you to build local relationships with trained professionals. As mentioned in the article on page 5, it is important for those who have been affected by trauma to feel supported. We hope that you will join other local school counselors and professionals in training to support your local districts. The upcoming dates for the next training are: April 22, April 30, and May 8, 2014 (you must attend all 3 days) at Cornerstone of Hope, Columbus. Scholarships to cover the cost are available for school counselors, please contact Marissa with any questions at marissa@cornerstoneofhope.org. Twelve New York Life volunteers spent time with 20 Cornerstone kids and made art projects with them for a day of service! For more information about any of these programs, please contact Cornerstone of Hope in Columbus at or visit cornerstoneofhope.org 11
