Healthy Living Newsletter You started 2015 with the best of intentions - moving more, eating healthier and stressing less - but sticking to these resolutions hasn t been so easy. Sound familiar? It might be time to rethink your approach by setting manageable, daily actions that will turn into habits. For instance, if eating healthier tops your list, start by simply drinking eight glasses of water a day or eating at least five fruits and veggies. Want to prioritize exercise? Commit to taking the stairs or signing up for new exercise classes. Sick of feeling stressed? Start your day 15 minutes earlier so you have time for a relaxing cup of tea. Choose from a variety of activity options, connect to one-on-one support when you need motivation, or simply follow the plan tailored to what s right for you. You ll feel great, and if you complete all path activities by 6 p.m. on Aug. 28, 2015, you ll be eligible to earn up to $480 off your M Medical Plan premium. Even if you didn t complete the online health assessment, you can still participate in a variety of wellness programs to help you feel your best this year. Make 2015 the year of follow-through. 2 Featured News When Gambling Becomes a Problem Although gambling is a harmless form of entertainment for many people, for others it creates serious financial, legal, emotional and family problems. As we recognize March as National Problem Gambling Awareness Month, here are some warning signs that indicate gambling may be a problem: Spending a lot of time thinking about or planning when to gamble. Difficulty controlling or stopping gambling. Feeling guilty about gambling or your losses. Placing higher bets to get the same level of excitement from gambling. Using gambling to escape from problems or feelings such as depression or anxiety. Lying to family or friends about your gambling. Missing important activities or not following through on personal, professional or financial obligations. Gambling to make up for money you ve lost to gambling. Asking family or friends to lend you money to gamble or help you out of a financial crisis caused by gambling. Seek help if you see these warning signs in yourself or are affected by a loved one s gambling. Problematic gambling is a behavioral health condition that can be addressed with appropriate treatment. Fortunately, many people recover from gambling problems and lead healthy and fulfilling lives. Meeting with your local 3M Employee Assistance Program (EAP) professional is often a good first step toward getting appropriate treatment. Your EAP professional can help you assess if gambling is a problem, discuss treatment options and refer you to resources tailored to your unique situation and needs. Commit to 1 hour per month for meetings and volunteer opportunities at 3M Healthy Living events. Choose foods wisely, make moderation your vacation mantra and stay as active as possible during your trip.] (Source: WebMD) Did You Know Even though colon cancer is the number two cancer killer of men and women in the United States, it is possible to greatly reduce your risk of getting or dying from colon cancer. Fitness Fact Everyone knows that moderate-intensity physical activity can help you live longer and reduce health issues, but do you know how? Regular exercise helps control blood pressure, body weight and stress. It even improves digestion and fights osteoporosis. Plus, regular exercise makes people feel better. A good fitness program includes cardiovascular, strengthening and flexibility exercises. Cardiovascular exercises such as walking, swimming and cycling are great for increasing your heart rate. Strengthening exercises such as lifting light weights or household items such as milk jugs help to maintain muscle mass. Stretching exercises help maintain range of motion and decrease risk of injury, and are a great way to wrap up a workout. The onsite Fitness Centers at 3M offer a variety of cardiovascular and strength classes for members. There s something for everyone - no experience necessary! (Source: ) If you are age 50 or older, you should be screened for colon cancer. There are several screening options. One of the best is colonoscopy. During a colonoscopy, a flexible lighted tube is inserted into the rectum. A physician looks through it and examines the entire colon for cancer or precancerous growths called polyps and removes any that are present. If the colonoscopy shows nothing, a follow-up colonoscopy is done in 10 years. If something is found, a follow-up may be done in as few as three years. A first screening at age 50 is appropriate for anyone at average risk. People at higher risk should begin screening at a younger age. People at higher risk are those with a personal history of colon diseases such as ulcerative colitis or Crohn s disease; cancer of the uterus, breast or ovary; or a family history of colon cancer or colon polyps. Check with your doctor for more information about when you should be screened and the different screening options. (Source: National Cancer Institute)
