2 Border Community SERVICE Niagara County Valerie Haseley In May, I made wonderful strides with our good friends at the Niagara Falls Air Reserve Station. They are pleased to know that we are an organization that can provide volunteers for the Thunder of Niagara Air Show, taking place September 10 & 11, The Air Show is slated to honor the memory of those affected ten years ago in the September 11th attacks. This year's featured act will be the United States Air Force Thunderbirds. A wide variety of military aircraft, aerobatic airplanes, and vintage war birds will also be performing and on static display. They hope to have record attendance this year so they need plenty of volunteers assisting with directing traffic, making food/ water runs and helping with lost and found. In addition, we will have a booth promoting our program. It will be a long day for those who volunteer, but you will be able to enjoy the festivities while helping the men and women who serve our Country. If you are interested in assisting with the Air Show, please complete the attached Volunteer Form to this . Volunteers are also needed to man informational booths at various events throughout the summer, including the Niagara County Fair August 3 7. See page 7 for more details. Please consider helping for a four-hour shift. Attached to this newsletter, is an application to join the Niagara County CERT Steering Committee. If you are interested in CERT and want to provide input on how the program can better serve Niagara County, please consider joining. We hope to meet every other month and members will conduct outreach initiatives and develop training for members. Please complete the attached application and return it to our department by Friday, July 1, In May I was able to reach out to a variety of parenting groups in Niagara County. I conducted the Ready America presentation with Focus on Family at the Harry F. Abate School, Center for Young Parents through the Alternative Parenting Program at the Niagara Career & Technical Education Center and the Parenting Program at Opportunities Unlimited of Niagara. The parents I spoke with learned valuable information that will help their family during an emergency. I was invited to be one of the featured speakers for the Council of Older Adults of HANCI s Safety Forums throughout Niagara County. The first presentation was scheduled at the Wilson Fire Hall with additional presentations to take place in June. I also attended the Independent Health Good for the Neighborhood event that took place at the Doris W. Jones Center and spoke with 75 families about our program. I have many presentations and events planned for June that I m very much looking forward to. Please contact Valerie Haseley at or vhaseley@niagara.edu for more information about programs and events occurring in Niagara County. Town of Tonawanda Jess Martin As we finish up our latest CERT class offered through the Town of Tonawanda, I would like to thank everyone who attended, helped and volunteered their services to make this class successful. We couldn t do it without you! Many thanks! Page 2
3 City of Buffalo Elizabeth Oddy May was an outstanding month for Border Community SERVICE and the City of Buffalo! BCS has been attending district-wide block club meetings, Mayor Byron Brown s Save Our Streets: Operation Clean Sweep, and Independent Health s Good For The Neighborhood nights both on the East and West side. BCS has been meeting with the Buffalo Common Council Members to forge effective partnerships and have distributed 200 Preparing Makes Sense brochures so they may pass them on to their constituents. We have also been giving presentations for residents at local organizations. Additionally, 113 Every Business Should Have a Plan brochures were given to the Elmwood Village Association for distribution among their member businesses. Ready America presentations were given at the Good Shepherd Community of Faith and St. Paul s Church. Thank you to Pastor Barbara and Carol Nye for helping to prepare their communities in the case of a disaster. All the attendees were very appreciative not only for the Grab and Go kits that were distributed after the presentation, but for the life-saving information that was discussed. Mayor Byron Brown s Save Our Streets: Operation Clean Sweep has proven to be a great venture for BCS. We have been present on six weekly sweeps now, and have distributed preparedness materials to 161 households on Rodney, Minnesota, Kearns, and Navel Avenues as well as Krettner, Watson, Sears, Clark, and East Utica Streets. We are working to be a part of the many summer events and activities that Buffalo is famous for. Please stay tuned for volunteer opportunities this summer. Let me extend my gratitude for your interest and participation in our programs and please feel free to refer any groups in the City of Buffalo who might be interested in a presentation. Also, if you know of an upcoming event that we could arrange to have a BCS informational table at, please do not hesitate to contact me at or ehoddy@bpdny.org. Enjoy the beautiful outdoors! Dana Estrada will be out of the office on extended leave beginning June 15 th until mid-august. If you need immediate assistance, please call Gail Struzik at or Dr. David Taylor at ICS 100 certification - offered on line only Important Notice: Due to limited need and improved technology access, as of April 29, 2011, Independent Study exam answers will no longer be accepted on Form Form is commonly called an "Opscan form" or "Scantron sheet". All answers will need to be submitted via the internet at Page 3
4 Lend a hand Helping out our Neighbors - One canned good at a time! So many residents from the surrounding area of ArtPark, located in Lewiston, NY enjoy the free concerts offered each Tuesday. Did you know that you can help out your neighbors in need by bringing with you a donation of a canned food, non-perishable food item, special needs items such as paper products, baby diapers, toiletries and/or a cash donation and your donation will be utilized by one of the local food banks such as Community Missions and/or Heart and Soul, both located in Niagara Falls as well as the Ransomville Food Pantry - all who assist those in need. So while you re packing up your lawn chair and sunscreen and getting ready to enjoy a very enjoyable, free concert - please plan ahead and bring with you a donation to help those in need around us.
