1 Heretaunga Seniors Newsletter Number One March 2017 A place for friendship Some of our spring chickens Angus - 93 yrs, Charlie - 95 yrs and Claude - 98 yrs COORDINATOR S MESSAGE WELCOME to our first quarterly newsletter for The last few months of 2016 were a time for fond farewells and new beginnings at Heretaunga Seniors as we said goodbye to Linda Kidd our Pastoral Care Coordinator who left us on 17th November with plans to move back to Australia to be closer to her children and grandchildren. Linda had returned to NZ in 2013 to look after her Mum until she died in 2014 and during that time Linda became a volunteer with us, assumed the duties of our treasurer and eventually took on the role of pastoral care coordinator. We loved and treasured Linda for so many wonderful qualities her caring and compassion, her sense of fun, as well as her many practical skills and efficiency. HARERE RA LINDA! 2 Communi'es Thriving But, just when we think one door is closing, another o?en opens and late last year we welcomed Sariah Timu as our new Pastoral Care Coordinator. Already we feel Sariah is a taonga - who comes with her own unique set of skills, life experiences, ease of presence and warm personality. NAU MAI, HAERE MAI, Sariah! On Wednesday 14 December 2016 we held our Annual Christmas Party. Our staff & volunteers entertained and served 119 meals followed by Christmas cake and SANTA gifts for each of our members to take home. CHRISTMAS PARTY - 14 DECEMBER 2016 OUR STAFF TEAM

If I should feel unwell I know that caring and capable help is at hand and that staff at Heretaunga Seniors will follow up with support beyond the call of duty. - Ru Davis This is a great place. I checked out a lot of clubs for older people before coming here and this is the best. You all do a great job. I just wish more people were aware of what is provided here for older people. 4 Our 2017 Staff Team WHO ARE WE WHAT DO WE OFFER? We are a community centre for older people and have been operating in the wider Hastings community for over 20 years. We provide activities from Monday to Thursday and outreach services to older people living in their own homes. Our programmes include: KEEP FIT Therapeutic Exercises Marilyn ScoE Centre Coordinator CRAFT GROUP / 500 Card Club DIGITAL SENIORS computer courses for seniors with 1:1 tuition & a weekly drop-in internet hub/cafe. COMMUNITY DAY including musical entertainment, guest speakers, produce, raffles, quizzes, two-course meal etc. GAMES DAY with indoor bowls, board & card games eg crib, 500, rummikub skipbo scrabble, housie etc. Two course meal (optional) Sariah Timu Pastoral Care Coordinator MEALS on-site and take away Twice a week we provide a nutritious two-course meal, cooked on site and we also offer frozen meals & soups to take away. VAN OUTINGS Once a month we have an outing to a place of interest usually also including a meal out. (3rd Tues of month) FOOT CLINIC. (3rd Wed of month) Ngaire MacDonald Kitchen Coordinator We also have a book & DVD Library & offer transport to all our activities for a small fee. 5 TRANSPORT & MOBILITY OPTIONS FOR ALL Both our vans have hoists to assist those who need it with ge[ng in and out easily Exercitation ullamco et laboris nisi ut aliquip ex ea commodo consequat. Mobility is a big issue for our people, many of whom can no longer drive themselves and are reliant on our vans & our team of volunteer drivers to get them to & from our centre. We are indebted to the Hawkes Bay Foundation, The Hastings RSA (now Clubs Hastings) and the Gwen Malden Charitable Trust all of whom have contributed towards vehicle expenses and/ or van outings over recent years Wednesday Walkers! Not uncommon to see a line- up of mobility scooters like this outside our doors these days!

6 MELBOURNE CUP DAY 2016 Every year we celebrate this iconic Australasian day with festivities of our own - Hats, Horses a sweepstake, sumptuous food and some horsing around! Our members and volunteers alike never fail to rise to the occasion with costumes that would not look out of place at Flemington itself! JILL on Melbourne Cup Day one of our many treasures who brighten our Community Centre each week with their colourful outfits and bright and caring personalities. JUDY & COLLEEN - Two of our front-of-house volunteers all dressed up on Melbourne Cup day to welcome our members as they arrive for the day.

7 INTERGENERATIONAL OPPORTUNITIES COMPUTER PROGRAMMES & WEEKLY INTERNET CAFE Our Digital Seniors classes wit h small groups of 5-6 offering 1:1 tui tion are again proving very popular this year and allow a number of our younger tutors (as well as som e of our more seasoned volunteers) to share their skills & knowledge with the older generation WIN WIN ALL ROUND! If you think you could help in either of these ways, or you know of others: family members, friends, businesses etc who may be able to support us with a regular donation, we would be very grateful. Our account is with ANZ and the account number is: We can provide you with a monthly or annual receipt for tax purposes if you wish and you are of course welcome to cease or alter your contribution at any time if your circumstances change.
