Founded in 2001 by a group of people personally affected by ovarian cancer, our vision is to save lives and ensure that no woman with ovarian cancer walks alone. We work to ensure that: Women with ovarian cancer have a strong voice Every Australian knows the symptoms and risks of ovarian cancer All women with ovarian cancer have access to best practice diagnosis, treatment, information and support A vibrant and growing national ovarian cancer research effort in Australia informs practice and translates into improved quality of life and survival for women. BACKGROUND The Research Business Development manager is a newly created position to develop the strategy for the next iteration of Ovarian Cancer Australia s role in facilitating high impact research. In 2014 Ovarian Cancer Australia released the National Action Plan (NAP) for Ovarian Cancer Research
2 This ground breaking Plan was aimed at providing a strategic framework for transparent and accountable investment in ovarian cancer research to ensure available funds are used to optimal effect and act as a catalyst to drive further, much needed investment. This was the first time a national plan had been developed for ovarian cancer and for the first time provided a priority-driven focus for investment, unifying the efforts and providing a blueprint for researchers and funders from around Australia. It also includes a Charter setting out principles for ovarian cancer research excellence and calls for researchers to align with these. The primary focus of this role is to both re-evaluate and prioritise the continued roll out of the National Action Plan for Ovarian Cancer Research whilst identifying any new priorities that have arisen since the plan was developed and develop a fiveyear strategy for immediate implementation. RESPONSIBILITIES Develop the OCA strategic plan for research: Undertake a review of the OCA National Action Plan for OC Research and identify the priorities for OCA research and investment. Work in consultation with the OCA board, leadership team, medical research and advisory group, ovarian cancer clinicians, researchers and consumers to identify from the National Action Plan for Research into Ovarian Cancer the strategic plan outlining OCA s involvement in research over the next five years. Work in collaboration with the OCA fundraising and marketing teams to identify major research funding opportunities via philanthropy and corporate sponsors. Identify opportunities for OCA to seek further major funding towards research projects and initiatives i.e. state and federal government funding, NHMRC (National Health and Medical Research Council) and Medical Research Future Fund (MRFF) Develop research proposals for funders, including detailed project plans, budget and reporting mechanisms Stakeholder and community engagement:
3 Develop, engage and maintain ongoing contact and relationships with gynaecological oncology service providers, State and Federal Departments of Health, Cancer Councils and other medical, research and oncology Build and support mechanisms to engage with consumers to further inform and develop OCA research agenda (e.g. through individual consultations, consumer advisory mechanisms, surveys, etc.) Provide representation of OCA to external organisations and funders and maximise networking opportunities. Develop and maintain effective relationships with key contacts in these organisations and relevant Reporting, evaluation and accountability: Maintain CRM database to record all related activities, in accordance with privacy guidelines. Contribute to evaluation data collection as relevant to areas of responsibility and collate information into routine and ad hoc reports for Managers, Board, and funding bodies. General Work in collaboration with the organisation s marketing and communications, awareness, fundraising and support teams to support projects, campaigns and other OCA activities. Contribute to the development of Ovarian Cancer Australia strategy and planning. Contribute to the culture of decision-making including initiation, cooperation, collaboration and shared accountability. Other duties as directed. EXPERIENCE, SKILLS AND QUALIFICATIONS Relevant qualifications (science, nursing/health professional background) At least five years experience working with in cancer research Experience in community engagement with consumers and professional Excellent communication and interpersonal skills with extensive experience in grant/proposal writing
4 KEY SELECTION REQUIREMENTS 1. Relevant qualifications (science, nursing/health professional background) and experience in a major medical research or Government health portfolio. 2. A minimum of five year s experience working in the field of cancer research including a high level of knowledge and understanding of the cancer research sector and knowledge of the research environment and funding schemes that support cancer research. 3. Extensive experience in a major research or Government health portfolio including a significant track record of achievement in supporting applicants in the development and success of major research grant applications. 4. Excellent communication and interpersonal skills including: a. experience writing reports and grant submissions b. professional stakeholder engagement and liaison 5. Demonstrated evidence of leading and developing targeted strategic planning and implementation in the research sector. 6. Experience in the use of technology with a high level of competence in the Microsoft Office, demonstrated experience or willingness to learn a CRM database. 7. The ability to demonstrate initiative, problem solve and to work with minimal supervision as well as part of a team, within a structured reporting system. 8.
