On December 18 th, 2012, more than 60 Jefferson County Public Schools (JCPS) volunteers and community partners enjoyed a festive afternoon of mingling and reflection during the Volunteer Talent Center s (VTC) 2012 Holiday Open House. Volunteers involved in programs ranging from Every 1 Reads, Service Learning, Early Years Initiative/ Aquatics Resources and many more, used this occasion to meet and greet one another and also had a chance to meet JCPS Superintendent Donna Hargens. This yearly open house gives the VTC a chance to say thank you LEFT, DR. HARGENS CHATS WITH AQUATICS FISHING VOLUNTEERS. 2 A legacy of literacy remembering Connie Cameron It is with heavy hearts that we inform our volunteers that Connie Cameron mother, grandmother, educator and friend passed away on Wednesday, December 19, Connie was born in upstate New York and graduated from St. Lawrence University, where she met her husband Jack Cameron. Upon moving to Louisville with Jack in 1955, she started working for Jefferson County Public Schools (JCPS). In 1990, after retiring as a JCPS administrator, Connie, along with the late Roy Birmingham, founded the Volunteer Talent Center (VTC). Connie s desire to increase volunteer involvement in Jefferson County Public Schools spurred a nearly 25 year tenure as coordinator at the VTC. Her contribution to education in Jefferson County was far reaching. Her work touched the lives of individuals from all backgrounds. Whether she was spearheading grant proposals to fund Service Learning Projects, working with Americorps VISTA community workers, or making sure Every 1 Reads volunteers had the appropriate training to work with struggling readers, Connie always fought to make our community a better place. Every 1 Reads is pleased to welcome Epworth United Methodist Church as a monthly training site. We look forward to working with Pastor Gary Maguffee and his church family. Trainings will be held at Epworth United Methodist Church, THERE ARE STUDENTS WAITING FOR YOU. CALL FOR MORE DETAILS. Real Men Needed! The VTC will sponsor its fourth annual Real Men Read Day on Wednesday, April 17, as part of Mayor Greg Fischer s Week of Service, Volunteers for the program will be asked to read a story to predetermined third-grade classes. U nfortunately, recent studies have shown that young men often change their attitude toward school and Family Life Center, 919 Palatka Road, Louisville, KY 40214, at 10:00 a.m. every 4 th Thursday of the month. This training is listed on our regular schedule of training dates. 5 The Volunteer Talent Center In operation since 1990, the Volunteer Talent Center recruits, trains, and places volunteers to meet identified student needs. The options for service cover a broad range - from tutoring and or mentoring individual students to serving as judges for academic fairs, chaperoning school events and making writing books for classroom use.
