As you may know, the Junior League is a volunteer-based group of women focused on the health and educational needs of woman, children and families in the Greater Winter Haven Area. For the first time, the League is publishing a cookbook as one of its largest fund-raising projects. 5 A Splash of Citrus BOOK SUMMARY A Splash of Citrus is a collection of over 100 recipes that were submitted by members of the Junior League of the Greater Winter Haven, Inc. Each chapter will capture a location or historical event in Greater Winter Haven. Through high-quality photography, historical side notes and menu suggestions, the cookbook will highlight this unique part of Central Florida and the flavors that locals love. A Splash of Citrus will be promoted through newspaper and television advertisements and special events. Books will be sold through members of the Junior League and through our publisher, FRP. They will be placed in local and national chain bookstores, local shops, restaurants and other Junior Leagues throughout the nation. Proceeds from the sale of each book will fund the various charities served by the Junior League of Greater Winter Haven.

6 Junior League of Greater Winter Haven Who are we? The Junior League of Greater Winter Haven, Inc. is an organization of women committed to promoting voluntarism, developing the potential of women, and improving communities through the effective action and leadership of trained volunteers. Its purpose is exclusively educational and charitable. The League is made up of more than 50 active members and more than 75 sustaining members. The Junior League of Greater Winter Haven, Inc. was founded in 1981 and joined the Association of Junior Leagues International in One of the earliest projects of the Junior League of Greater Winter Haven, Inc. was the Women s Resource Center. Today, we continue a tradition of service to the community with projects throughout the Greater Winter Haven area. League members donate more than thousands volunteer hours annually by participating in various community projects.

7 Junior League of the Greater Winter Haven OUR COMMUNITY PROJECTS A Mother s Voice The JLGWH implemented A Mother s Voice project to encourage communication between incarcerated mothers and their children. Supported by Sheriff Grady Judd, our volunteers go into the jail dorms, meet one on one with the mothers and grandmothers who have fallen on difficult times. During the meeting, a digital recording is made of the mother reading a book based on what she knows to be of interest to her child. This heartfelt reading is then converted to a playable disc. Once completed, the book, the disc and a portable cd player are delivered to the child. Though their living circumstances are not of the norm, the need for a continued relationship between mother and child is just as important. What an awesome feeling be a part of helping a child fall asleep while listening to their mother read to them while listening to A Mother s Voice! Family Fit Fest The JLGWH funds a family-friendly event that promotes fitness, nutrition and overall health awareness. Educational games, a fun run, healthy cooking demonstrations, health and wellness screenings and fitness activities are some of the ones presented at this free community event. Local businesses that promote wellness rally together to share their knowledge to educate families. Adults and children of all ages leave Family Fit Fest with a better understanding of how to live a long and healthy life by making lifelong choices to stay fit and happy. Teacher Mini Grants We believe that motivated and inspiring teacher know the needs of their students best. The JLGWH awards grants up to $250 to individuals proposing innovative programs, participation in high-quality professional development experiences, a need for a lack of resources, or an experience that can profoundly affect your student achievement. In addition to the financial awards, sweat equity grants (volunteer hours) are also awarded as the JLGWH strives to help teachers help student in our community. Grants are open to all public and private school teacher in the Greater Winter Haven Area including Winter Haven, Auburndale, Bartow, Lake Alfred and Lake Wales. Done in a Snap This program allows the JLGWH the opportunity to work with local charities and community events in assisting with a variety of projects that can be completed in one day. The League typically helps staff events by providing hands-on leadership and assistance to people attending projects such as the Regency Baby Fair, Salvation Army Toy Drive, The Winter Haven Hospital Citrus Classic and The Polk County Tennis Cup.
