2 The American Legion Orcutt Post W. Clark Avenue, Orcutt CA Post Commander Hello all, It has been a month full of changes at the post. These changes are making the post financially better. I know some of you have made suggestions for more changes I ask that you be patient. Changes do not occur overnight. As promised, we now have the NFL package for this football year, so enjoy. I feel we are moving forward which is evident in the increase of activities being posted on our calendar. If you haven t yet taken a look at our calendar yet do so, so that you can see the new things that are happening. Please consider volunteering for these activities our post can only become better with your help, no one will say NO to you offering your help!! Again, I am excited and looking forward to a better month. Please feel free to contact me with any questions, I am here to do what I can for the post, I hope you feel same about the post as I do. Thank You Frank Bordon Commander 1 st Vice Commander First, I would like to thank Marty McGrath, Dave Mann, and John Ellenbrook for answering the call, and supporting the Ford Car show, by rising the flag with me. When the public came calling these individuals stepped up. This is a trend we need more of, currently we are working hard to provide service and events for all members to participate in. Don t be shy we need all the support we can have. If you have an issue please come with a solution we understand this is your post and want the members to take ownership of it. With tat said I feel that the post is slowly coming alive and becoming the place were we all can meet and socialize. Alejandro Amado Ladies Auxiliary President Memberships are coming due so Please send them in as soon as possible to help support the women's Auxiliary We are having our Ride 2 Recovery on October 18, They will be coming in around 11:00 to 12:00 Tell your friends and family bring your flags to help line the streets to help cheer them in. They will be stopping at our post for sandwiches, drinks and treats and a rest to continue the next

3 stop on their way to LA We are having a change of our meeting for October so that we can plan the menu of the Ride It will be Oct 9th at at the post. We are having a combined meeting part for the planning for the Ride and part to get some reports. So, we need as much help we can get for both events The women will put on the Breakfast on November 4th. We have not decided as of now what is being served but I am sure it will be good. Come support our Auxiliary We had our dinner for our Girl Stater and she did a speech of her experience at Girl State. I am very proud of the turnout of members that showed up to help support the Girl State. Watch for flyers for November for a new game Roadkill Bingo as soon as I have it organized I will put out flyers and put in newsletter so hope to see you there and win some steaks and other prizes Sons of American Legion Wishing everyone a Happy Halloween. S.A.L. Membership cards for 2019 are available, so I encourage all S.A.L. Members to renew their membership soon as possible. Our Commander received from the S.A.L. a donation of 00 towards a $700 bill for our renewal of the NFL package for this 2018/2019 football season, so grab a few friends and come on down and enjoy an afternoon of football. October 7th is S.A.L. turn to do breakfast and once again you will enjoy a thick & juicy 1-inch Barbecued Pork-chop with all the fixin s, get there early before we sellout Thank you S.A.L. Squander Commander American Legion Riders Can you believe it's almost the end of September folks? We have quite a few functions coming up. On Friday make sure you get your Chili Verde from the SAL. Then on Sunday we have the post picnic. For the ALR, to be determined yet, the Ride to Recovery, our breakfast, toys for tots the events go on and on. More to come next month Rick Pieprzycki ALR President SCOUTING REPORT CUB SCOUTS: Over the past few month, our Post's Cub Scout Pack has experienced a big influx of youngsters who want to be part of one of the best Packs in our area. We are now at 40* Cub Scouts, which equates to about 9 Dens, comprised of 4 or 5 Cubs per Den. Last year, the Boy Scouts of America enabled families to be less conflicted in having to choose which of their kids' outside activities they could support, a situation which resulted in many families simply taking their boys out of Scouting in an attempt to attain some balance in their weekly schedules. In response to that situation, the BSA now allows those Packs who chose to, to include girls in the Scouting program. The program has not changed - - the requirements for advancement is the same for boys and girls. And this doesn't mean the BSA is now "co-ed" - girls joining the Pack will be in their own Dens, and only interacting with

4 the boys at the monthly Pack meetings or outdoor activities and only when there is a trained female Den leader present to oversee their participation. This new BSA emphasis is referred to as "Family Scouting", and is growing significantly across the country. Earlier this year our Post's officers authorized our Pack's leadership to enroll girls in the Pack IF they so choose, and the leadership was very receptive to doing so. When the word got out, we quickly had 2 girls enroll in our Pack, bringing our total enrollment to *42. Until the female Den leaders recruit more girls so they can establish a minimum of 3 in a Den, they will only be invited to attend the monthly Pack meetings, and authorized to work on completing the program requirements toward achieving their awards. The BSA's "Family Scouting" program is, in my experience as an adult Scouting leader of many years, a very positive and logical direction for the future of the BSA. BOY SCOUTS: Last month 4 of our Troop's Scouts earned the coveted rank of Eagle Scout. Along with the Eagle Scout award, they were also presented the American Legion Eagle Scout Citizenship medal and certificate by yours truly at an Eagle Court of Honor. The leaders of our Troop have been very successful in guiding and encouraging their young men to achieve this highly recognized recognition - and Troop is among the most (if not THE MOST!) successful BSA unit in the Santa Maria Valley. Alan Munch Post Scouting Advisor/ Chartered Organization Representative Events Remembering the missing As Legion members we are charged with remembering our POW / MIA s from the nation s wars and conflicts. To remember, we set out a chair for them at our post meetings, we remember them in the posts opening and closing prayers and we even remember them by having a small table set aside for just them with items like a flower, lemon slice and salt that are steeped in symbolism. Their sacrifice and suffering will be remembered until they are repatriated and returned to their families. It is in this vain that I would like to tell you about our Posts participation in Vandenberg s POW/MIA events. Beginning on September 20 the air base holds a 32 Hour event that includes three separate concurrent remembrances. The first event is held at the bases POW/MIA memorial where the names of the missing will be read in alphabetic order over the 32-hour period. Unfortunately, there are so many service member s captive or missing that reading every name in hard to accomplish. The second event is a runto-remember where Air Force members and volunteers run with a POW/MIA flag around the base track and throughout the

5 base continuously for 24 hours. The last event is new. A team of Air Force members will walk (ruck) throughout the base for the same 24-hour period. These events are to remind us of the adversities faced by not only our POW/MIA s but their families as well. So please help me in congratulating Jeff Weeks, Pernell Rush and the POW/MIA flag presenter Grant Myers and all Post 534 participants in a job well done!! The represented the Post well in showing our service members the pride to the community. So, you might be asking yourself so what? How is Post 534 involved? Three members of your Post 534 arranged a patriotic ride where 10 members of Post 534 executed, along with representatives from 211, active duty Air Force members, the Touring Elks and other private organization to include a Canadian representative--carried the POW/MIA flags used in the ceremony from Santa Maria to Vandenberg AFB. 31 motorcycles transited the base to the athletic field, then assembled an American flag line where two Post 534 members walked down to present the flags to the Ruck and Run participants. The military members then carried those flags in continual motion--for the next 24 hours.
