2 Jacksonville Memorial Post 88 Commander s Corner Legion Family Can you believe that it's almost Christmas and the year is about to end? How time flies when we are having so much fun at the Post. I hope all had a enjoyable Thanksgiving at the Post dinner and with family and friends. Just a reminder for everyone to be safe traveling this holiday season. We want all to return home safely. The Dept of Florida Commander, Diane Boland, and some other dignitaries will be visiting our Post home this month on Dec 5th for Open Mic Night and again on Dec 8th for breakfast so come meet the state leaders. A lot will be going on this month at the Post so don't be a stranger! Come and see what's happening! Steel tip darts league play is coming to the Post very soon. The back drop and boards are under construction now and will be complete soon. If you have not renewed your membership dues for 2019 as of Dec 31st your membership will be no longer valid so let's get it paid and don t let your membership and Post privileges get suspended. 4 SAL Post 88 S. A. L. NEWS Hi All, Here we are in December and the year is almost over. Thanks to all of you that have helped out with selling and serving dinners, cleaning up afterwards or generally helping out our Post. I only wish there were more folks contributing a little time and effort. While this time of year is when families come together, it is also time for reflection and prayer and wishing! As I reflect on this past year I become perplexed and concerned at the lack of participation of the S.A.L. members. I wonder what we can possibly create or generate to create interest and commitment from them? Suggestions are quite welcome please! My wish is for all of our Post programs to become a cohesive unit and work together as a family with love, appreciation and respect for one another. Finally, my Christmas prayer is for this Post to become much more viable and visible within our community in a way that brings us all together and helps us to help others in a grander way. Isn't that what it's all supposed to be about? Merry Christmas and Happy New Years to all of you! Peace, Love and Happiness to all, Tommy Skinner 2nd Vice P.S. on December 5th we will have special guests from the Department and 5th District coming to our open mic night. We expect a big turnout in support of our dignitaries and also a good turnout of musicians and comedians for this edition of Not Your Grandpa s Open Mic Night. Please come out and show support! S.A.L. dinner will be Chili with toppings cornbread salad and dessert SQUADRON 88 KEY DATES DATE TIME LOCATION ACTIVITY 12/6 7:00 PM Post 88 House Committee Meeting 12/ AM Post 88 SAL Breakfast 12/22 AFTER Breakfast Post 88 SAL Meeting 12/ PM Post 88 SAL Dinner PAGE 4

7 American Legion Centennial This Month in American Legion History Dec 15, Past National Commander Harry W. Colmery starts to write in longhand, on Mayflower Hotel stationery in Washington, the first draft of what will later become the "GI Bill of Rights" considered the Legion's single greatest legislative achievement Dec The Legion officially begins a relationship with United Services Automobile Association (USAA), making the veteran-founded insurance company "The American Legion's preferred provider of financial services." The purchase of USAA products gains money for Legion programs. USAA representatives often give members helpful financial information and tips through Legion media. PAGE 7
