Helping Young People Reach Their Potential

Partnerships Aberystwyth (Aberystwyth Arts Centre & Penglais Learning Support) Swansea (Glynn Vivian Art Gallery & Swansea YMCA) Cardiff (Ffotogallery & Bespoke) Wrexham (Oriel Wrecsam & Youth Offending Team) Llandudno (Oriel Mostyn & Ninjas YP group) Carmarthen (Oriel Myrddin & Rhydagors Residen/al School) Newtown (Oriel Davies & Youth Offending Team) Denbighshire (Ruthin CraW Centre & Denbighshire Youth Service)

Ffotogallery and Bespoke IT and digital skills Numeracy (materials budgets and exhibi/on planning) Presen/ng and talking about their work to visitors and strangers

I only wish I had found (visual arts projects for hard to reach young people) earlier from an educa;onal perspec;ve it is so important that art is seen as theirs and is a big part of life in general. Incredibly valuable to my type of organisa;on but should be to all. (Manager, Bespoke)

The Momentum project is weaving its magic across both sides of the school. Once again it has proved to be a powerful tool in keeping learners engaged and afending. (Teacher Louise Morgan)

All of this would have been inconceivable without Momentum. This is a powerful tes;mony of the value of extended arts based projects with hard to reach young people. (Teacher, Rhydagors, Carmarthen)

Hard Outcomes 58 young people achieved an accredited qualifica/on: Arts Award or Agored Cymru 3 achieved a place in college or further educa/on that had not been expected prior to the project 1 took part in art- related work experience as a direct result of the project Prac/cal Art Skills - photography (using a camera, composi/on, edi/ng, prin/ng, exhibi/ng), print- making, metalwork, book- making, sewing, book- making, displaying artwork IT skills were developed in photographic skills (edi/ng, special effects, downloading, saving files, crea/ng online albums), learning logs, and researching ar/sts on line (as part of Arts Award) Literacy skills were developed in all projects: speaking and wri/ng were used to complete Arts Award log- books, group discussions took place about the projects and contemporary / historic ar/sts who worked in a similar art form, and each young person developed confidence talking about their own work and giving their opinion.

Soft Outcomes Increased levels of mo/va/on and self confidence Greater levels of engagement/concentra/on Increase in par/cipa/on in posi/ve ac/vi/es Improved rela/onships with peers Higher personal/career aspira/ons Increased levels of self esteem

ARTS AWARD (Trinity College) Na/onally recognised qualifica/on 5 levels Discover, Explore, Bronze, Silver and Gold Advisor training in Wales CC Skills Useful framework for young people with limited numeracy and literacy For anyone up to 25 years Arts Award Advisors ar/sts, teachers, youth workers

Hillside Secure Unit and YOI Parc Aims and objec.ves Pilot ar/st- led Summer Arts Colleges in youth jus/ce sefngs in Wales Develop long term sustainable partnerships between arts venues and youth jus/ce sefngs Share outcomes widely with arts and YOS sectors Inspire, raise the aspira/ons and improve mo/va/on of young people Break down barriers to learning Signpost to crea/ve industries Offer high quality arts experiences CPD for ar/sts CPD for youth jus/ce sefngs

Hillside Secure Unit, Neath 6 young people Bronze Level Arts Award 14 Hillside staff completed Arts Award Advisor training (teachers and carers) Posi/ve feedback from Estyn inspec/on about project Delivering Arts Award this year New Skills for staff

YOI Parc Prison, Bridgend 8 young people Bronze Level Arts Award Artwork supported elements of GCSE art and NOCN (Agored) qualifica/ons New skills for teaching staff YP working independently in own /me Developed cri/cal thinking skills It was brilliant miss, thank you

Moderator Feedback Very impressive! I can see that some very powerful work has taken place and that young people have had meaningful opportuni;es to respond to new art work and develop their skills and crea;ve response. Well assessed and well evidenced, with some excellent adapta;ons for the context It s clear from mee;ng them (young people) and looking at their work that they have enjoyed doing Arts Award. Its clear they enjoyed picking their own thing to work on and being allowed to do this

Charlie Taylor Review of Youth Justice Service If children are busy during the day, undertaking ac;vity that is meaningful, and that will help them succeed in life.they are much less likely to offend (pg. 3) children who are not doing anything enjoyable, mo;va;ng, produc;ve are more likely to become involved in crime. (pg. 8)

If I had stuff like this on the outside, I wouldn t get into trouble (young person, Hillside)
