2 MOST IMPORTANT WORK MEETINGS Getting ready for a new academic year. Each new academic year means new officers and new ideas for chapters activities. In September we organised a first meeting where Andrzej Gajewski was officially appointed a new chapter president. After a brief summary of previous chapter activities, we counted how many people can find a time during the week for chapter activities. With that in mind, we planned our futures activities. Presidental elections. We organised two meeting in order to elect new chapter president. All candidates were good, but none could match Piotr Skonieczka energy and enthusiasm which in the end were deciding factor in that election :). Starting next academic year Piotr Skonieczka will be our president. Organisation meetings. After electing Piotr and attending very inspiring workshops during OPTO Leadership in Gliwice, we held 3 meetings. We wanted to share what we learned during the workshop and then we talk about how are going to use that knowledge. There are some changes we want to apply. Mainly we want to try to launch a small scientific project in order to attract more scientific oriented people. Our plans are still in the preliminary state. 2

3 SELECTED EVENTS AND ACTIVITIES May 2016: OPTO-Meeting in Gdansk OPTO Meeting for Young Researchers this year was organised by SPIE from the University of Technology in Gdansk. OPTO meeting is a great opportunity to exchange scientific ideas and to learn how are our friends progressing in their research. OPTO meeting was attended by Ewa Maczynska and Krzysztof Szulzycki who both had a poster presentation. August 2016: visit to San Diego In 2016 our former president, Ewa Maczynska, went to San Diego for annual conference SPIE Optics + Photonics She participated in Student Chapter Leadership Workshop where she proudly represented Nicolaus Copernicus Chapter! The trip to San Diego is something we all are looking forward for many of us is once in a lifetime opportunity. Ewa knew it too, so she wisely chose to travel and experience the USA as much as possible. 3

4 OPTO Leadership Meeting Gliwice December 2016 In December last year, Silesian SPIE chapter held an OPTO Leadership Meeting. Our chapter sent three representatives: Ewa Maczynska, Krzystof Szulzycki and Andrzej Gajewski. OPTO Leadership was a great opportunity for meeting the new members of chapters from whole Poland. Silesian chapter, besides giving us a great platform for networking, also prepared few presentations about how to manage a chapter and make a good poster&presentation. We also had an opportunity to meet with representatives from many companies who presented their products. Workshop Django Girls in city Lodz Our president-to-be Piotr Skonieczka was one of the organisers of workshop Django Girls. During that event, Piotr taught young women, who had never before had to do anything with IT, how to programme in Phyton. During that workshop, he along with his 4 female students created a core of CMS system. 4

5 Riding the Wave Riding the Wave is a project of our institue. It promotes technical sciences among high schoolers. Ewa Maczynska and Krzysztof Szulzycki participated in that event and were guides who gave tours of our institute's laboratories. All activities promoting science among high schoolers are very important for our university, institute and chapter. Every year there is fewer and fewer students interested in studying technical sciences and those who decide, that is a path they want to take often choose to study in a capital. Lack of students is a huge problem for NCU and it remains unsolved. Khet games April 2017 Just as every year we organised Khet game. Although our ideas for science shows were rejected and we didn t participate in this year Torun Art & Science Festival, we didn t let ourselves be completely pushed out from the festival! We 5

6 decided that if we cannot perform experiments during the festival we will teach people how to play khet. And it was a huge success. We didn t expect that so many people will be interested in that game. We were even asked to borrow few khets to a group of board games enthusiasts. Piotr Skonieczka answered invitation and supervised their evening. SPIE SECURITY & DEFENCE I had a pleasure to participate in scientific conference SPIE Security and Defence. I wouldn't be able to afford conference if I hadn t had a member s discount. I found that conference to be very interesting because of a variety of people participating. I had an opportunity to talk to navy generals, people from Fraunhofer Institute and, of course, people from my field (quantum optics). SPIE Optics + Optoelectronics Our Secretary, Marta Misiaszek, participated in conference SPIE Optics + Optoelectronics in Prague. Our chapter decided to help her financially and cover some of her expenses. Marta is one of the most active members of our chapter 6

7 and institute. There has never been a situation when we needed her help and she refused us. During the conference, Marta presented poster Measuring dispersion in nonlinear crystals beyond detectors spectral range. Girls for Science Girls for Science is the name for campaign aiming for promoting technical science among young girls. All universities in Poland participate in that event, Nicolaus Copernicus University included. Obviously, we couldn't miss such opportunity to get involved in a big event. Girls from our chapter got very involved in the organisation of Girls for Science day in Nicolaus Copernicus University. Ewa Maczynska, Karolina Sedziak and Marta Misiaszek encouraged girls to join them in the ranks of technical scientists. During that day approximately 300 girls from high schools and pre-highschool visited our institute. 7

8 Future plans: organisation of The 2nd BE-OPTICAL launching a small scientific project attending OPTO Meeting 2017 in Gdansk participation in next Torun Art and Science Festival organisation of Khet Tournament School (ongoing) Finances Begining balance: 240 USD (May 2016) SPIE funds received: 510 USD activity grant (500 USD really, but considering exchange rate diffrence between January and May we gained extra 10 USD ); 8

9 No other funds were raised nor received; Ending balance: 250 USD (as at the end of April 2017); How did we spend the funds? participation of our member in the students conferences (OPTO meeting and SPIE Optics + Optoelectronic): 320 USD chapter meetings (cookies, refreshments): 80 USD participation of our member in the leadership workshops for all polish chapters: 100 USD 9
