4 GEORGIE HARMAN CEO, beyondblue MICHAEL O HANLON Workplace Engagement Manager, beyondblue Georgie Harman was appointed as the CEO of beyondblue in May She has significant and broad-ranging policy and service delivery experience in the community, public and private sectors in Australia and the United Kingdom. From , she worked at the Commonwealth Department of Health where she had national responsibility for Australian mental health, suicide prevention and substance misuse policy and programs, including those targeting Aboriginal and Torres Strait Islander people. She was one of the architects of the 2011 cross-portfolio National Mental Health Reform Budget package. At the same time, she was responsible for the early strategy and development of legislation to introduce plain packaging of tobacco products in Australia a world first. Georgie has also worked in the community sector and in private enterprise. She came to Australia in 1999 to be the inaugural Executive Director for the Bobby Goldsmith Foundation in Sydney Australia s first and largest independent HIV/AIDS charity. She has also worked extensively overseas, particularly in non-government organisations in London. Michael has over twenty years experience in operational and management roles in the mining and information technology business units of BHP Billiton, followed by a period in a major US information technology company and a state based OHS regulator. Following a personal experience of depression and anxiety within the workplace Michael joined the beyondblue Workplace and Workforce Program in 2005 as the Business Manager for the National Workplace Program, and is now the Workplace Partnerships Manager. Michael s personal goal is to use the combination of his corporate management experience, his personal experience of depression and anxiety, and his work in the mental health sector to assist Australian businesses to improve the mental health of their workplaces. 5 PROF ALLAN FELS AO Chairman, National Mental Health Commission CRAIG HAMILTON Respected Sports Broadcaster and Leading Mental Health Advocate Professor Allan Fels was until recently Dean of the Australia and New Zealand School of Government, an institution established by the governments of Australia, New Zealand, the states and territories and 16 leading universities that educate and train senior public sector leaders. He is Chairman of the Haven Foundation, which seeks to provide accommodation and support for the long-term mentally ill. Professor Fels was Chairman of the Australian Competition and Consumer Commission from 1995 to 2003 and before that Chairman of the Trade Practices Commission and Chairman of the Prices Surveillance Authority. Professor Fels serves or has served on a number of government advisory boards. He is also patron of many mental health networks. He was a member of the Bayside Health Board for a number of years. Professor Fels is a long-term advocate of mental health policy reform and a carer for his daughter. In September 2000, respected sports broadcaster Craig Hamilton was hospitalised after suffering a psychotic episode at a busy railway station. Instead of covering the Sydney Olympics, one of the biggest opportunities of his career, Craig was confined to a padded cell in a mental institution and later diagnosed with Bipolar 1 Disorder. He has become one of Australia s leading mental health advocate s and public speaker s, sharing his journey from the depths of hell to regaining his health and happiness. Star of the documentary Broken Open, Craig has used his privileged position in the public eye to challenge perceptions, calling for increased support for sufferers and providing health and wellbeing advice across Australia. Craig has travelled extensively sharing his story and tips for better living in rural and remote communities, as well as for some of Australia s largest organisations. CHRIS GIANATTI Principal, Kelly Hazel Quill Lawyers FAY JACKSON General Manager of Inclusion at RichmondPRA, NSW Mental Health Commissioner, Associate Fellow with UTS. Chris worked for a number of years with Corrs before moving inhouse to Telstra as HR Legal Counsel for the Factory (covering Telstra s back of house operations including the field workforce). In that role he was also a key strategic advisor to Telstra s COEs for Workplace Relations, Talent & OD and Remuneration, as well as also being a major advisor to Payroll, Vendor Management and Corporate Security on employment issues. Most recently before joining KHQ, Chris was a partner at a national workplace relations boutique based in Melbourne. Chris regularly appears in the Fair Work Commission, as well as in the Federal and State courts. While based in Melbourne, his practice often takes him to Perth, Sydney and Brisbane, with his major clients spread across a range of industries including resources, infrastructure, construction, banking, manufacturing, transport, media, professional services and retail. In Fay s positions over the past 15 years, all of her staff have had mental health issues, most having been diagnosis with bipolar and schizophrenia. Some have emerged out of the forensic mental health systems. Fay knows the importance of having work and of having a boss that understands how to support, manage and performance manage people with mental health issues and traumatized backgrounds. Fay has been called in to workplaces from small government departments to multi-national oil companies to sort out mental health situations where staff have been victim to and/or are causing issues which the HR department were. Fay is on the National Mental Health Commissions Leadership Group and has won several awards including the Meritorious Service to Community Medal, is a Paul Harris Fellow. 6 JOHN CANNING Partner, King Wood Mallesons Law Firm ANNA-LOUISE BOUVIER Executive Director, Happy Body at Work John Canning is a partner at KWM Law firm where he specialises in cross border structured finance transactions. John is recommended as a leading individual in the area of Aviation by Legal Media Group s Guide to the World s Leading Aviation Lawyers 2008 and The International Who s Who of Aviation Lawyers. He is listed as a leading individual in the area of General Bank Lending by Chambers Global Guide 2009 and is also recommended in the areas of Banking & Finance: Asset Finance & Leasing, Property Finance, Corporate Finance and Asset Finance. John has been involved with the design and implementation of the Personal Property Securities Legislation (PPS) with the Attorney General s Department and Senate Inquiries. John is now advising clients on the impact of the PPS on their business and products. In Chambers Global Guide 2009 John was described by peers as a brilliant lawyer who is both clever and commercial in his approach. Anna-Louise is the Executive Director and Creator of Happy Body At Work, a Joint Venture with the ABC which includes clients such as Optus, the ASX, Minter Ellison, CatholicCare, the University of Sydney and UTS. She is also the creator and Executive Director of Physiocise, which over the past 20 years has taught over 66,000 classes to people with bad backs and wobbly bodies. She has been co-author on two research papers related to those programs with the University of Sydney, and has been published in the prestigious peer reviewed European Spine Journal. She is a regular on ABC Local Radio with James Valentine, and The Today Show and was an expert on the ABC s Making Couples Happy and Making Australia Happy. She has released 3 DVD s and 3 best selling books. She is an international corporate speaker and was named Australian Fitness Presenter of the Year, and appears in the Who s Who of Australian Women. She is also an Ambassador for Arthritis NSW and for COASTREK. MARK DOBSON Wellbeing Coordinator, Fire & Rescue NSW SHARON LEADBETTER Workplace Health Promotion Network Coordinator at Way Ahead. NSW Mental Health Association Mark Dobson s approach to his Wellbeing Coordinator role with Fire & Rescue NSW is innovative, proactive and recognised - last November he was honoured with a prestigious icare Treasury Managed Fund Award for Risk Leadership. Importantly, Mark has created an evidence-based wellbeing model, founded on peer engagement and effective systems, which can be adapted to any public or private sector operation. Mark has a natural empathy with people which has been honed during his various leadership roles with the Royal Australian Navy and in the fields of change management and television production. He is passionate about his current role and a compelling speaker. Sharon Leadbetter has a Masters in Psychology and a Certificate in Health Promotion. She has previously worked in New Zealand s public health tobacco control sector and as an ethnic minority community development worker in England. Sharon is currently the Workplace Health Promotion Network (WHPN) Coordinator for the WayAhead - Mental Health Association NSW. Her role involves liaising with key stakeholders and researchers in the workplace and mental health sectors, including the Mental Health Commissions in both NSW and QLD. A key aspect of the role is to serve the diverse membership of the network, and create professional development and networking opportunities, and access to resources for workplace members. 7 REBECCA RANDALL PhD Scholar, Young and Well Cooperative Research Centre TOM BAXTER Chief Executive Officer, Ostara Australia Rebecca is a PhD research student and research assistant. Her PhD research looks at creating a method to evaluate youth involvement in the Virtual Clinic project. The National Institute for Mental Health Research (NIMHR) aims to improve the mental health of Australians through research, education, and policy development. The centre conducts research which focuses primarily on mental health, including depression, anxiety disorders, substance abuse and bipolar disorder. The centre s mission is to reduce the prevalence of mental health concerns in the community and improve the lived experience of people with a mental illness, through high quality research and translation of research into practice and policy. Tom Baxter is CEO of Ostara Australia, a national not-for-profit organisation that specialises in finding sustainable employment for job seekers who are disadvantaged through mental illness or other disability, and assists employers who wish to create more mentally healthy workplaces. Ostara Australia is the largest mental health specialist in the Disability Employment Services sector. Tom joined Ostara Australia in October 2013 after a three year stint as General Manager at Scope Business Enterprises, where he oversaw the transformation of Scope s commercial enterprises. Over his career Tom has fulfilled a variety of senior executive roles across the not-for-profit disability, banking and health insurance sectors. JEN COULLS CEO, Tincat Consulting Mental Health Advocate RACHEL CLEMENTS Director of Psychological Services, Centre for Corporate Health Having been involved in the mental health sector for 10+ years as both a consumer advocate and in health policy and practice, Jen is committed to ensuring a strong primary health care system as the backbone for prevention and treatment of mental illness and also as the catalyst for mentally healthy communities. This includes influencing the formulation and delivery of broader social and economic policies relating to education, training and employment. With a lived experience, Jen has had two terms as the carer representative on beyondblue s National Priority Driven Research evaluation panel and several years as a member of Suicide Prevention Australia s Lived Experience Advisory Committee. With post-graduate qualifications in business and a long and successful career in the higher education and government sectors, Jen established Tincat Consulting in late 2010 to assist government, universities and not for profits to achieve strategic objectives through policy improvement. In addition Jen is the South Australian GM of Occupational Therapy Australia. Rachel Clements is the co-founder and Director of Psychological Services and Principal Organisational Psychologist at the Centre for Corporate Health Pty Ltd, a boutique management and psychological consulting organisation based in Sydney. The Centre for Corporate Health specialises in helping organisations maximize their overall functioning by building individual and organisational resilience, which improves productivity, psychological health and overall well-being. Rachel works across a range of industries and specialises in professional services organisations such as law firms and finance, construction, insurance, health / hospitals and government agencies such as emergency, justice and community services. Rachel s client list includes, but is not limited to, Henry Davis York, Freehills, Comcare. Allianz, QBE, Westpac, St George, John Holland and Macquarie University.
