3 RELAY FOR LIFE BACKGROUND The American Cancer Society s Relay For Life is a life-changing event that gives everyone in communities across the globe a chance to celebrate the lives of people who have battled cancer, remember loved ones lost, and fight back against the disease. For 100+ years, the American Cancer Society has been leading the way to transform cancer from deadly to preventable. At Relay, teams of people camp out at a local high school, park, or fairground and take turns walking or running around a track or path. Each team is asked to have a representative on the track at all times during the event. Because cancer never sleeps, Relays can be overnight events and can last from 6-24 hours in length.

4 RELAY CEREMONIES Celebrate The Survivor s Lap Survivors circle the track together as they take the first lap Remember The Luminaria Ceremony Honor those who have been touched by cancer and remember loved ones lost Fight Back The Fight Back Ceremony Everyone makes a personal commitment to save lives by taking up the fight against cancer

6 WHERE DOES THE MONEY GO? Cancer Research 47 ACS funded researchers have won a Nobel Prize Patient Support Hope Lodge, Look Good Feel Better, Road to Recovery Prevention Info/Education Cancer screenings, healthy lifestyle Detection and Treatment Information Services, programs and services

8 REPRESENTING A CANCER Relay is not only for raising funds to fight cancer but to also help spread awareness of different types of cancer. The night of Relay have a poster board with: Have a poster at your campsite explaining general information: What is it? Who normally gets diagnosed with it? Is it gernerally caused by something (smoking lung cancer) Is there a suggestion for frequency of screenings? Please use cancer.org for your information!

9 ONSITE FUNDRAISERS Can be anything just needs to be approved by us! Rules for all to follow: NO glitter All teams selling food MUST: Have a tarp or table cloth down underneath the table Food permit (we will provide) List of possible food allergens in food

10 PICKING AN ONSITE FUNDRAISER All teams will be picked in a random order and tell us what your onsite fundraiser will be We do not allow doubles as to not allow competition at Relay Please come with at least 3 ideas IF two teams feel very strongly about their idea might talk about possible collaboration

14 ON-SITE THEME In addition to selecting an on-site fundraiser, we are also going to be selecting a theme for each table. Since the theme is Disney/Pixar, we will have a list of famous movies and/or characters that you may select from to decorate with. This will help make the theme and decorations more lively! No duplicates, there s endless options!
