September 2015 I continue to receive positive reports on the District newsletter. Remember that the deadline for the newsletter is the 15 th of the month, so some items will appear in the following month s newsletter. My last two meetings of August were to Durbanville and Newlands. Although Durbanville is smaller, both Clubs are vibrant, well run, busy and attracting new members. A big thank you to the many Club Secretaries who diligently capture their MMR s and activities on MyLCI. It makes our lives so much easier when we don t have to waste our time and energy on nagging! BUT, there remain a few Club Secretaries who are not complying. A reminder that it is the Club President s responsibility to ensure that the Monthly Membership Report (MMR) is captured by no later than midnight on the last day of the month. My visit to Bergvliet almost didn t happen, due to the fact that although I was convinced I knew the location of the meeting, I couldn t find it in the dark, resulting in Lion Cecil Jansen being despatched on a rescue mission! However, when I eventually arrived, only 5 minutes late, I thoroughly enjoyed the meeting. 2 District A hosted the 1 st Council meeting of the year over the weekend of 21 st / 22 nd August. A nerve wracking time for me as it was my responsibility to book accommodation, venues and dinner on Friday and Saturday evening. I was so proud of our District who out-performed the other three Districts. Then the following day, with no opportunity for a Sunday morning lie-in, I took up John Houston s challenge, to walk 10kms at Blisters for Bread, to raise additional funds for the Peninsula School Feeding Scheme. I was accompanied by PDG Diana Sochen, 2 nd VDG Geila Wills and PCC Rashmi Kooverjee, in ideal weather conditions. I thoroughly enjoyed the walk, particularly the opportunity to meet the Lions and Leos en route. I was, however, very pleased, to take a seat at the Lions / Leos hospitality tent and enjoy a sandwich and cup of tea! DG Sue and LP Gavin of Worcester ************************************************ The following evening, I drove over Chapman s Peak to Hout Bay, an easy trip for me, as I avoided most of the extensive road works. However, the Sunday Craft Market, the main source of fund-raising for the Club, has been badly affected by the road works and inclement weather. Hopefully, additional signage along the detour and warmer weather will see an increase in visitors to the Market. DG Sue and entourage **************************************************** September started off with a visit to Worcester, accompanied (and driven) by PCC Seymour Abrahams, who calculated that the last time he visited the Worcester Club was 30 years ago, when he was District Governor. I revelled in being the only woman amongst so many men, who kindly agreed to conduct the meeting in English, with the odd lapse into Afrikaans. Worcester s policy of never having a repeat President and encouraging as many members as possible to convene projects, should be adopted by other Clubs, as it ensures good succession planning. DG Sue and Acting LP Horst of Hout Bay ************************************************* The second week of September, 2 nd VDG Geila accompanied me to Tygerberg Hills where we were treated to supper before the meeting. DG Sue and LP Jeannie of Tygerberg Hills Page 2

The following day Kirstenbosch President, Lion Sundru Pillay and I attended the Durbanville Leos meeting. We must encourage our young Leos, they are the Lions of the future, and need our support. DG Sue with the Leos ****************************************************** On the Thursday evening, PDG Pierre Theron and I visited the Tokai Club Branch of Forest Valley, who although they only have 6 members are very active in the community. DG Sue with members of Forest Valley ************************************************** I ve had a few queries from Facebook fanatics who read that Lions from District A9, in Ontario, Canada, were shipping a container of second hand bikes to Cape Town. Much as we would have loved to be involved in the distribution, the bikes were destined for the Bicycle Empowerment Network, who distribute them to BEC networks throughout the Western Cape, where the bikes are repaired and sold on at a reasonable price. Although my position as District Governor takes precedence over other Lions activities, I try to find the time to participate in my Club s projects. On Friday 11 th September, Kirstenbosch Club members, partners and family, congregated at the Club house to make 1,500 sandwiches, that s 3,000 pieces of bread that needed margarine and jam on 1 slice and peanut butter on the other!. However, it was a case of many hands make light work, the task being completed earlier than expected, and an opportunity for a couple of slices of pizza and a drink, before an early night to prepare for the following day. On Saturday morning, we were joined by 20 Leos and Lions from Groote Schuur Club at the Parow Athletics Club to offer logistical assistance to the organisers of Future Champions, a day of athletics (track & field) for youngsters from Children s Homes throughout the Western Cape. The first event of the day was the egg (potato) and spoon race and proceeded through the various age groups, culminating in the open flat races. The sad thing is, that the vast majority of these children have family, but have been placed in homes by the state for various reasons. This is the essence of Lionism. The opportunity to give these young people a day to remember, where they are made to feel special and loved and fulfil our motto of We Serve. See pics under Club News. A reminder that October is Sight month and we are invited to join a special Lions Worldwide Week of Service in Sight (October 4 10) designed to eliminate preventable blindness and improve sight in our communities. It s a great opportunity to show your commitment to sight and to help LCI reach the Centennial Service Challenge goal of serving 100 million people. Page 3

Lead Through Service In just the first year of our centennial service challenge, Lions have responded in an overwhelming manner. We have now served 40 million people more than a third of our 100 million goal. Nearly 23,000 clubs have participated in at least one service challenge activity, and 6,000 clubs have earned the diamond patch participating in all four areas of the challenge. Hereunder the breakdown of the Centennial activities for our district for this fiscal year: Please continue to update your projects on your clubs MyLCI Service activities. Page 8

LCIF CHAIRPERSON IPDG MOIRA THERON IPDG Moira Theron - LCIF Every day, Lions Clubs International Foundation (LCIF) works to fulfil our mission: "To support the efforts of Lions clubs worldwide in serving their local communities and the world community as they carry out essential humanitarian service projects." Earlier in August, Typhoon Soudelor tore through the Pacific Ocean. Once a super-typhoon, Soudelor claimed dozens of lives. Millions of families were without water, electricity or shelter. The storm caused monsoon rains, high winds, flooding and landslides throughout the region. Lions Clubs International Foundation (LCIF) responded immediately. A US$10,000 Emergency grant was awarded to the Lions of District 204 Micronesia for relief efforts in Saipan. A US$200,000 Major Catastrophe grant was awarded to Multiple District 300 Taiwan to assist with both immediate needs and long-term reconstruction. The Lions of MD 300 Taiwan, China and Micronesia came to the aid of their neighbours. Rebuilding after Typhoon Soudelor will be no easy task, but Lions and our Foundation are committed to supporting the humanitarian needs within these communities for the short and long term. Please consider making a contribution to LCIF's disaster relief fund and giving hope to those who have been devastated by this disaster. LCIF is dedicated to a range of humanitarian service projects. The Foundation continues to develop and expand programs that meet emerging needs worldwide. Funding directed to Area of Greatest Need provides LCIF with the ability to financially support any program within the other four general areas. Donors are encouraged to consider this option when making a gift. I would like to appeal to those Lions Clubs that have MJF in credit, to please seek worthy recipients - both as individual as well as Corporate Companies and honour them for the work that they do within their communities. Remember, that this exercise can be wonderful PRO for your club. Make the presentation meaningful by hosting a special handover, invite the local dignitaries e.g. School Heads, Police Station Commanders, Church Leaders, the local press etc. Take your own photos as well and submit together with a brief writeup, to your local press. LCIF thanks you all for your continued support. Moira moira.theron@gmail.com (a/h) Page 9

DC Gisela Weitz Youth Exchange New exciting Youth Exchange Program for July 2016 A fresh approach to make youth exchange attractive again has been tabled at the last Council Meeting. The scheme is to invite 10 exchange students aged years to a +- 5 day organised youth work camp in each of the Districts and limit home hosting to 2-3 days! The new program should succeed in what youth exchange is ultimately all about: attracting youths who are sincere about a new learning experience. I urge all Lions to PLEASE inform me of any camps they know of, to keep their ears open or ask around, camps such as Volunteer Work Camps (community, hospitals, old age homes, vegetable gardens etc) Wildlife and domestic animal rehabilitation centres Nature conservation centres Environmental/educational camps mangela@telkomsa.net Transport to and from camps, the cost of camps, accommodation and meals, is paid by the students. District 410A has been subsidizing home hosting by R75 pp pn and I propose that an identical subsidy is paid by the hosts clubs, something which many clubs have in place already. Depending on the type of camp we may need a Lion, or Lions alternating, to visit the youths periodically during a camp. For this purpose we suggest to also budget for a contingency fund of R750. Once we have more information on suitable camps, a budget for financial assistance to the Districts or clubs will be tabled at the next Council Meeting. With your team s support this program will become a resounding success! I look forward to receiving your input. Gisela Weitz DC Youth Exchange Mobile Tel Page 10

DC Johan van Es International Relations Source Lions Clubs International WEB site Learning and Serving through Club Twinning Club twinning is an excellent opportunity for Lions to extend their service mission beyond their national borders. When possible, twinned clubs are encouraged to seek opportunities to serve together. With the help of social media and virtual communication tools clubs can plan a joint activity, report results, and share photos and stories with fellow Lions. Please share your activities with the other clubs through your activity reports! Please, I am asking for an effort from the Club secretaries to support me and forward your info with or without pictures to: The District Chairperson International Relations : Johan van Es ( address: adagency@iway.na) OooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooO District 410A Green Living September 2015 Big 5 mountains to climb Ribbokkop (979m) - The Golden Gate Highlands National Park s Ribbok Trail is one of the highest altitude hikes and an ultimate challenge. Not only does this tough 2-day trail test your mental & physical fitness, you will cross Ribbokkop the highest peak in the park in the Free State. Table Mountain (926m) - Climb the most famous landmark in the country. The aim is Maclear s Beacon. Bargain 3-4 hours to get there starting at Platteklip Wash House, Oranjezicht and links with Platteklip Gorge. Formosa (800m) - hiking to the highest peak in Tsitsikamma Mountains is not for the faint-hearted. Conditions are dangerous! Start early as this 10km return journey can take the entire day. Don t consider this trail if you suffer from vertigo. Vandersterrberg (650m) - Only the brave dare explore the unforgiving landscape of Ai-Ais/Richtersveld Transfrontier Park. The highest point on the Venstervalle Trail takes you close to this peak. Conditions are extreme and should not be attempted unprepared! Outeniqua Trail (510m) - expect spectacular scenery like only the Garden Route NP has to offer. With a total distance of 108km over 7 days, this is definitely one for the fit hiker. 12 Growing potatoes part 2 Living Seeds ( is the only on-line shop currently supplying about 5 heirloom seed potato varietals as well as 3 regular varieties. Or you can buy from an agricultural co-op. Once growth is evident and the stems start to emerge, slowly bank up the soil around the plant to encourage the development of tubers. Watering is best done directly onto the soil with a hose as potatoes don t have extensive root systems. Once flowers appear (an indication that the tubers are growing), any water stress would decrease your harvest. Water in the mornings and try to keep the water off the leaves as a humid environment is the perfect habitat for fungal growth. Once leaves start turning yellow, slowly cut back on watering to encourage potatoes to mature. You can now start picking baby potatoes. Once the plants have died back completely, you have a couple of options: (1) Leave them in the soil as long as you aren t expecting rain; (2) Or harvest the whole lot and store them. Don t wash them before storage! Best storage place is in a cool dark place, layered between dry straw or grass. Don t use old potato bags for storage! Enjoy your harvest. DC Liz O O DC Diana Sochen Health November is the month dedicated to Diabetes awareness and it is hoped that all Lions will take up the challenge to support those who are afflicted by this disease and to promote Diabetes awareness in their communities. A local newspaper recently printed the headline A Diabetes Tsunami is looming. Our sedentary lifestyles and the fact that school going children, in many instances, do not play sport, eat meals on the go mainly containing high carbs and spend hours on the internet or playing tv games compounds weight gain. These reasons give way to early onset diabetes which is easily preventable with a change in habits and lifestyle. How great would it be if Lions could set the example by inspiring communities to prepare vegetable gardens which can be the beginning of healthy eating encourage children to participate in exercise programmes or sport by Lions building exercise parks in their own town or nearby townships. Zone 1 & 2 are setting the tone by creating an awareness of the importance of knowing if you are in a pre diabetic stage or if you have diabetes by organizing a Strides for Diabetes Walk in their area on the 14 th November which is International Diabetes Awareness Day. Any Lion is welcome to join the event. Zone 1 will be walking along the Sea Point beachfront from the Lighthouse to the Pavilion and back and Zone 2 will be doing their awareness walk in the Tokai Forest. This is the first year that we will be promoting our own Diabetes Awareness walk and it is hoped that in the future all Zones will be involved. Further information can be obtained from myself or either ZC Sharon Cottle or ZC Cyril Jacobson. Page 12

members. If people sense discomfort and conflict, they will often resign/not come back and a member is lost. To address this, the trainers will be running conflict resolution and problem solving skills management sessions in the near future. Watch the DG s newsletter for details of future training dates. Please go to the Lions International website: and you will find many fascinating courses that you can complete at your own time. Keep an eye on the upcoming webinars: O O Zone Chairperson, Sharon Cottle New Zoney on the block I accepted the position of Zone Chairperson with a bit of apprehension. I would be required to tread unknown territory and the challenge seemed unbearable. I quickly also realised that our organisation needs to keep going for another 100 years for us to be of service to others. And so, it dawned on me that my club, my District and the Lions clubs organisation need me! How bad can it be? It is only for 12 months! My journey as zone chairperson has almost reached the quarter mark. Guess what? I am still here, loving it and having a great time. I have unleashed required skills, pushed some personal boundaries and, yes, amid the admin being nightmarish at times, I am looking forward to reaching the halfway mark I am pleased that I have managed to plan my personal schedule for this year and that I am able to serve my club, Groote Schuur Lions and my district, District 410A. 17 Grootfontein Lions Club 31 August 2015 [BLIKKIESDORP BUSHMEN PROJECT] Background: This group of Bushmen were sponsored by Lion Peter Wolf some years ago. They have 2 erven in Blikkiesdorp the poorest part of Grootfontein s location. There are about 10 families that live on the erven. We visited the group 2 years ago. What a sad experience! They were just breathing with no hope and no ambition. The area was dirty and the men drunk. They did nothing for themselves to try and have a better living or generate an income. They only waited for charity. I was very upset and said to Linda Pretorius, from Hearts, Hands & Voices, that if they do not help themselves, it is a waste of time and energy to help them. You do not really help them, you only encourage their sad way of living, as they know that she will provide food and clothing. Currently I visited the group at the beginning of June to distribute the last of the blankets of our Snowball project which was held on May, 9th What a surprise! There was a 100% change! It was clean and there was so much progress that I was astounded! One of the ladies was in charge of the group. She sends out a ray of joy and she was happy. The ladies started with needlework and had some completed items. They have no electricity or even tables and chairs to sit and do their projects. They have a cloth on the sand which tends to be the work-area. They have no sewing machines, everything is done by hand. Their work is so neat and you can see the joy they experience by feeling that they are worth something and have a purpose! They have just started with a quilt all by hand! I was so impressed no words to describe what I felt! But, one problem stood out like a pole above water. The children had no winter clothing. Our club did receive a donation of clothing, but it was all summer T-shirts and socks. We needed winter clothing. We sold some of the goods, but the funds raised, were not enough as we had to provide for children. One of our former members, who was called to higher service, wife told me that if we ever need something, we must just ask. It was the wish of our late member that she must still help when it concerned Blikkiesdorp s people. I phoned and received a huge donation our donor wishes to stay anonymous as well as the amount donated! But it was more than enough to provide for the children s need! I contacted Linda again with the good news. A list was drawn up and we set out shopping! We bought a tracksuit and a long sleeve shirt for every child and for the 3 babies from 2 weeks up to 6 months. We could buy more than needed! Page 17

The clothing was handed out on Wednesday, 10 June, around noon. Just in time for the winter cold that suddenly hit our town. (We did not have a cold winter last year and this year, it struck us late luckily!) And the projects The quilt was completed as well as some other items. One of the children is handicapped. The only thing that she can do is sit. Her mother has to carry her everywhere and attend to her most of the day. This means that her mother has difficulty doing her needlework. It was really a concern to me. The girl is only 8 years old. My heart ached for both mother and child. Luckily the challenge from our International President was sent out! As our club s president is also the chairperson of our local old age home, we received a wheelchair for this little girl! Linda and I went to her the moment we received the chair. The joy that both mother and child experienced cannot be captured on camera! What a great feeling to be able to help these children and add dignity to their lives!!! Here is the handicapped girl, age 8 years. This is how her mother carried her Lion Janita with the mother and little girl. 19 Tokai Lions Club Varsity College Second year students at Varsity College in Cape Town chose Tokai Lions as the subject of their corporate video project. The film crew led by director, Peta Van Zyl, and producer and presenter Frances Botha attended Tokai Lions clubhouse on Friday 4 th and Saturday 5 th of September. Friday they filmed sections illustrating Sight, The Naked Baby, and community outreach feeding programmes. Saturday they attended again to film a braai scene with Tokai Lions and friends to illustrate the friendly social side of Tokai Lions. They visited again on September 10 th to film at our Corporate Quiz Night to illustrate how Tokai Lions raise funds for its projects. The video is targeted at increasing membership and awareness of the Lions Club of Tokai and the work it does. Tokai Lions are very excited to see the finished product and be able to use it to show the community the great work we do and the great social side of becoming a Lion. The Naked Baby Project - The Circle Widens Tokai Lions continue to collect donation, funds and organise packing events for its Naked Baby Project. Due to media exposure we have attracted some great new groups who are donating to our project - Douglas Murray Home in Retreat, Espresso.Kom in Kommetjie, the Evening Guild at St Stephens Church in Pinelands, and Faith Hope & Charity. They join our regular contributors Mez Wallach in Lakeside and The Silver Threads in Retreat who we provide materials and wool for and they product wonderful baby items for our baby packs. One of the recent collaborations illustrated the great team work of people working in the community. Pet shelter in Hout Bay, DARG, could not use a batch of knitting wool which had been donated to them, so they gave the wool to the ladies at Douglas Murray Retirement Home. DARG suggested the ladies knit for Tokai Lions Naked Baby Project and they were more than happy to do so. Tokai President Charlie Flanagan collected some beautiful knitted baby items for the baby packs. A wonderful collaboration between the community and charitable organisations.
