JUNE 2014 Understanding Supplement Intake Guidelines Consumers are inundated with conflicting information about how and when to take vitamin and mineral supplements. The following information will help ALTRUM customers determine the level of nutritional supplementation that is appropriate for them. What Do the Numbers Mean? The Institute of Medicine has established guidelines to help people better understand the minimum and maximum doses for supplements. The Recommended Daily Allowance (RDA) and the Adequate Intake (AI) are the amounts of a vitamin or mineral needed to stay healthy and avoid nutritional deficiencies. They are calculated for women, men and specific age groups. The Tolerable Upper Intake Level (UL) is the maximum amount of daily vitamins and minerals that can be safely taken without risk of overdose or serious side effects. For certain nutrients, the higher you go above the UL, the greater the chance of having problems. The FDA uses a different measurement of nutritional intake. The Daily Value (DV) is the only measurement found on food and supplement labels. That number is the amount of a vitamin or nutrient that a person should get for optimum health from a 2,000 calories-a-day diet. The DV may be the same as the RDA, or it may be a different number. The RDA and DV are designed to help people get the nutrients they need to prevent disease and avoid problems caused by malnutrition. Many people take higher doses of specific supplements to gain greater health benefits such as added protection against or treatment of disease. Many vitamins and minerals are safe taken at higher doses. In fact, doctors sometimes recommend it. Vitamin D is an example. The RDA of vitamin D for a 60-year-old is 600 international units (IU). But for bone health, the National Osteoporosis Foundation recommends 800 to 1,000 IU for that age group. Although all supplements are meant to enhance nutrition, some of them can become toxic in high doses. Consumers may not know when to take more than the RDA or DV. How to Determine When to Take More To learn the safety of taking more than the RDA or DV of a nutrient, look for the tolerable upper intake level (UL) of a nutrient. 2 Continued from page 1 Supplements Meant to Enhance Healthy Lifestyle For many nutrients, it s safe to take a dose much higher than the RDA or DV without coming close to the UL. For instance, the average person can take more than 50 times the RDA of vitamin B6 without reaching the upper limit. However, some people develop neuropathy symptoms with these higher levels of B6. With some vitamins and minerals, the upper limit is pretty close to the RDA. As an example, a man taking just over three times the RDA of vitamin A would be taking more than the upper limit. High doses of vitamin A and other fat-soluble vitamins like E and K can build up in the body and cause toxicity. Other risky supplements include the minerals iron and selenium. Supplements are designed to supplement the diet. Simply taking dietary supplements is not the answer to good health. Experts recommend eating a well-balanced, healthy diet and taking supplements to fill in any nutritional gaps. A once-daily multivitamin with minerals offers well-rounded nutritional insurance. The UL is often the limit for all sources of a nutrient, which means it can include the amount taken in from both food and supplements. So it s important to factor in the amount of a nutrient in the food that is eaten when determining if one is reaching the UL of a particular nutrient. The average person is unlikely to take so much of a nutrient that he or she will run into trouble. But it s always wise to check in with a doctor before using a supplement regularly, especially when using any supplement in high doses or for prolonged periods of time.
