Ratinales fr Anntatin: Reading is thinking. Demnstrate yur thinking thugh clse reading. Anntating is a cre, preferred practice fr drawing meaning frm text. Descriptin f Anntatin: Anntatin is a key cmpnent f clse reading. Since we will anntate texts thrughut the curse, yu need t develp a system that wrks fr yu within the fllwing guidelines. Effective anntating is bth ecnmical and cnsistent. The techniques are almst limitless. Use any cmbinatin f the fllwing: Make brief cmments in the margins. Use any white space available inside cver, blank prtin at beginning r end f chapters, etc. REMINDER: If yu have checked ut a nvel, use Pst-It Ntes n pages instead f marking in the text. Make brief cmments between r within lines f the text. D nt be afraid t mark within the text itself. Circle r put bxes, triangles, r cluds arund wrds r phrases. Use abbreviatins r symbls brackets, stars, exclamatin pints, questin marks, numbers, etc. Cnnect wrds, phrases, ideas, circles, r bxes with lines r arrws. Underline r highlight cncepts. Always cmbine with anther methd such as a cmment. Never underline r highlight an entire passage. Ding s takes t much time and lses effectiveness. If yu wish t mark an entire paragraph r passage, draw a line dwn the margin r use brackets. CAUTION: Use this methd sparingly. Underline r highlight nly a few wrds. Create yur wn cde. Example: Yu culd use! fr an epiphany r? next t a questin yu raise. Methds f Anntatin: At the tp f the page r n a pst-it, mark the imprtant plt events. Every page will nt necessarily be marked. Be sure t figure ut any unfamiliar wrds thrugh cntext r by using a dictinary. Yu can circle the unfamiliar wrd and write the definitins in the text fr yurself. Highlight and mark fr yurself any cnflicts that ccur with the main character (prtagnist). Nte yur ideas abut these cnflicts in the text (wh / what is invlved, attempts t reslve cnflicts, etc). Highlight and mark fr yurself wrds and phrases that help describe the persnality f characters. Nte yur ideas abut the characters right in the text (persnality, mtivatin, fears / dreams, etc). Highlight and mark fr yurself any symblism, and nte yur ideas in the text as t what abstract ideas r cncepts these tangible bjects may represent. Dn t mark t much. If yu mark everything, nthing will stand ut. Once yu are cmpletely finished the bk and anntating, create a list f pssible themes, then pick the three mst imprtant thematic statements that yur bk addresses. Write thse themes n an inside cver r any blank pages f yur bk AND find supprting evidence frm the text t supprt yur ideas. Mark thse supprting passages with pst-its. Example themes: 1. A just individual has bligatins tward sciety. 2. A just sciety has bligatins it wes t an individual. 3. Sciety must cntend with the dichtmies presented by freedm and equality. 4. An individual can experience redemptin thrugh. 5. The accumulatin f mney and pwer leads t a lss f spirituality. Frmat f Text Anntatin: Fr the sake f standardizatin f anntating fr class and fr grading purpses, yur bk ntes shuld fllw this frmat: Inside Frnt Cver Character list with small space fr character summary and fr page references fr key scenes, mments f character develpment, etc. Inside Back Cver Themes, allusins, images, mtifs, key scenes, plt line, epiphanies, etc. List and add page references and / r ntes as yu read. Bttm and Side Page Margins Interpretive ntes, questins, and / r remarks that refer t meaning f the page. Markings r ntes t tie in with infrmatin n the inside back cver. Tp Margins Plt ntes a quick few wrds r phrases that summarize what happens here (useful fr quick lcatin f passages in discussin and fr writing assignments). Additinal Markings underlining dne while r after reading t help lcate passages fr discussin, essays, r questins brackets dne while r after reading t highlight key speeches, descriptins, etc, that are t lng t underline easily. Mre Thughts n Clse Reading: What shuld yu anntate? Again, the pssibilities are limitless. Keep in mind the reasns we anntate. Yur anntatins must include cmments. Remember that the purpse is t indicate evidence f thinking. Have a cnversatin with the text. Talk back t it. Ask questins (essential t active reading). Cmment n the actins r develpment f a character. Des the character change? Why? Hw? The result?

Cmment n lines / qutatins yu think are especially significant, pwerful, r meaningful. Express agreement r disagreement. Summarize key events. Make predictins. Cnnect ideas t each ther r t ther texts. Nte if yu experience an epiphany. Nte anything yu wuld like t discuss in class r d nt understand. Nte hw the authr uses language. effects f wrd chice (dictin) r sentence structure r type (syntax) pint f view / effect repetitin f wrds, phrases, actins, events, patterns narrative pace / time / rder f sequence f events irny cntrasts / cntradictins / juxtapsitins / shifts allusins any ther figure f speech r literary device reliability f narratr mtifs r cluster ideas tne / md imagery themes setting / histrical perid symbls Final Cnsideratins: The mst cmmn cmplaint abut anntating is that it slws dwn yur reading. Yes, it des. That s the pint. If anntating as yu read annys yu, read a chapter, then g back and anntate. Reading a text a secnd time is preferable anyway. Apprach the wrks with an pen mind. Let the literature inspire yu and stretch yur imaginatin. The utside reading assignment must be read and anntated befre class begins. It is perfectly kay t add t yur markings after yu finish the bk and are wrking n an essay, but the bulk f the jb shuld be dne in cnjunctin with yur reading fr class preparatins. If yu find anntating while yu read t be annying and awkward, d it after yu read. G back after a chapter r assignment and then mark it carefully. Yu shuld be reading assignments twice anyway, s this isn t any less efficient than marking as yu read and then rereading the material. Nte: If yu d nt purchase the bk and have check it ut frm a library, all cmments in the margins may be written n Pst-It Nte squares placed n apprpriate pages in lieu f writing n the text itself. A (90-100) Anntatin Grading Rubric Text is marked thrughut. Wrds and phrases are marked, and cmmentary and ntatins appear in the margins that indicate a respnse t the wrds and phrases marked. Marginalia (cmments in the margin) reflect applicatin f literary terms, questining, summarizing, and analysis. Anntatins accurately identify purpse and themes f the wrk. Reader has identified unfamiliar vcabulary and attempted t define thse wrds.

B (80-89) Text is marked thrughut. Lnger passages (entire sentences/entire paragraphs) are the primary element anntated. Cmmentary and ntatins in margins appear less frequently r d nt respnd directly t the passage anntated. Marginalia may be primarily summary r paraphrased statement with sme attempt at analysis. Anntatins may nt accurately identify purpse r themes f text. Reader may have identified unfamiliar vcabulary but did nt attempt t define the wrds. C (70-79) Text is nt cnsistently marked thrughut. Randm passages appear t be marked; passages selected ften have n real significance. Anntated passages may be very lng r very shrt. Anntatins include little/n marginalia r marginalia that is characterized by plt level questins r simplistic summary. Anntatins include little/n attempt t identify themes/purpse f text. Anntatins include little/n recgnitin f unfamiliar vcabulary. Anntatins d nt reflect careful reading f the text; anntatins d nt reflect interactin between the reader and the text. F (60 and belw) Anntatins are limited/incmplete and text is nt cnsistently marked thrughut. Randm passages appear t be marked; passages selected ften have n real significance. Anntated text is nt submitted n time (first day f schl).

Sharyland Pineer High Schl English III Pre-AP Summer Reading Assignments The Kite Runner The Kite Runner is an evcative nvel, inviting readers t immerse themselves in the tumultuus histry f Afghanistan and the trubled friendship f tw bys, Amir and Hassan. The English III summer-reading assignment cnsists f tw parts, a dialectical jurnal and anntatins, each part reflecting a careful reading f the nvel. Part I: Character jurnal This dialectical jurnal is a reader-respnse jurnal in which yu will select textual evidence abut a character and, based n that evidence, make an inference and prvide cmmentary that explains hw the evidence led t r supprts the inference. Fr example, the nvel pens with the first-persn narratr Amir hinting at an incident that happened when he was 12, an incident that defines wh he is. An initial entry fr a character jurnal abut Amir might lk like this: Character Jurnal: Amir Textual Evidence It s wrng what they say abut the past, I ve learned, abut hw yu can bury it. Because the past claws its way ut. Lking back nw, I realize I have been peeking int that deserted alley fr the last twenty-six years (1). ASSIGNMENT: Yu will create ten entries fr ne majr character--either Amir r Hassan, his childhd friend and cmpanin and five entries fr ne minr character Baba, Ali, Rahim Khan, Shrab, Assef, r Sraya. Yur jurnal will be typed and frmatted as fllws: *MLA heading Yur name Yur English teacher s name English III Pre AP Date *Prvide a title indicating the character with whm yu will be wrking; Inference and Cmmentary Haunted It is clear frm the beginning f the nvel that the narratr is haunted by his past, that--despite his trying t frget and bury it he has been cnsumed with and determined by it, peeking at smething that has claw[ed] its way ut and will nt be denied. The pening paragraph suggests that, thrugh flashback, the narratr will turn and face the disquieting event f 26 years ag. Create a table like this, making sure t include the headings fr each f the clumns; Qutatins must be exact, punctuated crrectly and fllwed by the page citatin; Evidence must span the nvel. Qutes nly frm the beginning r the end will result in a lwer scre.

Part II: Yu may chse Assignment A r Assignment B. Yu nly chse ONE (1). ASSIGNMENT A: Object: T shw an understanding f the themes, characters, imprtant turning pints, and symbls f the stry. Yu will create a kite, based n the bk. Yu may use clth, cnstructin paper, pster bard, whatever materials yu like in rder t build yur kite. Each panel will have smething t represent each f the abve key pints. Theme chse ne majr theme reflected in the bk. On a small prtin f the panel, explain the theme and hw the authr gets that theme acrss t the reader. Then illustrate the theme in sme way. Yu may use cmputer images, drawings, magazine cut uts etc. Character chse ne majr character and shw hw that character changes thrughut the curse f the bk. If the character yu chse is a static character, then tell me hw that character is imprtant t the stry. Make sure yu include persnality traits and mtivatin. Chse either a famus persn r mvie character that resembles yur chsen character in persnality and include a picture f that persn r character. Turning pints There are many imprtant turning pints in this stry. Chse ne and tell me why it is imprtant and hw that turning pint affects the utcme f the stry. Tell me hw the stry wuld be different if the turning pint were changed r nt included at all. Symbls We all knw the kite itself is an imprtant symbl in this stry. It symblizes nt nly Amir s self-trture, but als his eventual release. What ther symbls are there thrughut the bk? Chse ne and explain what it is, what it symblizes and why it is imprtant. Als include a picture f the symbl. Kite tail mst kites have a tail f sme srt, whether it be just pieces f ribbn, bws, r sme ther shape. Use yur tail t explain the three main parts f the bk (Amir s childhd, life in San Francisc, and the rescue f Shrab). Yu may use wrds and/r pictures, but if yu use just pictures, I need t be able t tell what the pictures reflect withut an explanatin. If yu think there will be any misinterpretatin, then make sure yu include an explanatin. Be creative in the design f yur kite, make it stand ut. Kites cme in all different shapes and sizes, nt just triangles. Yu will be graded n creativity, artistic impressin, and hw well yu explained each piece. Each explanatin shuld be at least 4-6 sentences. Have fun with it. Yu d be surprised at hw creative yu can be. Remember hwever, minimum effrt gets a minimum grade.
