1 DATA RELEASE: UPDATED PRELIMINARY ANALYSIS ON 216 HEALTH & LIFESTYLE SURVEY ELECTRONIC CIGARETTE QUESTIONS This briefing has been specifically prepared fr the Ministry f Health t prvide infrmatin frm this survey n e-cigarette use. This analysis uses the 216 Health and Lifestyles Survey (HLS) dataset. Publicatins fr this survey, including the methd reprt and questinnaire, are still in develpment and are nt yet publically available. These preliminary results shuld be treated with cautin. Final results may differ slightly. A cmprehensive analysis f the respnses is underway and will include specific cntext significant t the interpretatin f these results. This survey has seven questins related t e-cigarette use. Respnses are examined by sex and age. Statistical analyses have nt been undertaken t cmpare differences between grups; that is, we are nt yet able t state whether differences between grups are statistically significant. The errr bars represent 95 cnfidence intervals. Differential respnse patterns by sub-grups were cmpared using these cnfidence intervals. Where the cnfidence intervals d nt verlap the difference between sub-grups is nted as mre likely / less likely. The data presented belw are weighted. This means that the reprted percentages are adjusted t accunt fr each respndents prbability f selectin, as well as benchmarked t the New Zealand ppulatin, t ensure that n ppulatin grups are under r ver represented in estimates frm the survey. Methd detail fr the 216 HLS is prvided at the back f this briefing. Please nte the preliminary analysis has nt been externally reviewed. 14 February 217 (Updated 9 August 217) Page 1 f 17
2 PRELIMINARY ANALYSIS OF E-CIGARETTE QUESTIONS FROM HLS 216 The fllwing summary sectin has been added t simplify minr pints frm the initial reprt. Summary: One in six (17) New Zealand adults have tried e-cigarettes. Three percent f adults currently use e-cigarettes. Out f thse wh had tried an e-cigarette befre, 16 currently use them. The main reasns stated fr e-cigarette use are: T quit smking cigarettes E-cigarettes are less harmful then tbacc cigarettes E-cigarettes are cheaper than tbacc cigarettes E-cigarettes smell better than tbacc cigarettes T reduce, but nt quit cmpletely, the number tbacc cigarettes smked Almst tw in five (38) adults agreed that e-cigarettes are safer fr yur health than tbacc cigarettes. Frty-three percent f adults agreed that e-cigarettes can help peple quit smking tbacc cigarettes. 14 February 217 (Updated 9 August 217) Page 2 f 17
3 Key Findings: The fllwing sectin has been edited t simplify minr pints frm the initial reprt. E-cigarette usage All respndents (n = 3,854) were asked Have yu ever tried an electrnic cigarette? Key findings are: One in six (17) peple reprted having tried e-cigarettes (see Figure 1). Males (2) were mre likely t reprted having tried e-cigarettes when cmpared with females (14) (see Figure 2). Peple aged 15 t 24 years (3) and 25 t 34 years (27) were mre likely t reprt having tried e-cigarettes when cmpared with peple aged 35 t 54 years (16) and 55 years and ver (6). Thse aged 35 t 54 years were mre likely t reprt e-cigarettes usage when cmpared t thse aged 55 years and ver (see Figure 3) Yes N Figure 1: Prprtin f respndents wh have tried e-cigarettes. 14 February 217 (Updated 9 August 217) Page 3 f 17

The fllwing sectin has been added t simplify minr pints frm the initial reprt. Current e-cigarette use in the ppulatin Respndents were asked abut their current use f e-cigarettes. They were gruped int three grups: current users, thse wh d nt use nw, and thse wh had never used e-cigarettes (n=3,81). Current users included thse wh respnded that they use e-cigarettes either daily, weekly, mnthly r less ften than mnthly. 14 February 217 (Updated 9 August 217) Page 4 f 17

Nte: Thse wh respnded dn t knw r refused were nt included in the analysis (n=44), this differs frm the ther sectins in this reprt where dn t knw and refused respnses were included in the analysis. Use f e-cigarettes was then cmpared acrss sub-grups. Key findings are: There were n differences bserved by sex fr current users f e-cigarettes, hwever; it is likely that mre males (17) than females (11) have tried e-cigarettes and that mre females (86) than males (8) have never used e-cigarettes (see Figure 5). Older peple aged 55 years and ver were mre likely t reprt they had never used an e- cigarette (95) when cmpared t all ther age grups (see Figure 6) Male Female Male Female Male Female Current users Dn't use nw Never used Figure 5: Use f e-cigarettes in the ppulatin by sex. The fllwing sectin has been edited t simplify minr pints frm the initial reprt. Frequency f e-cigarette use Respndents wh reprted having tried e-cigarettes (n = 657) were then asked Which best describes hw ften yu use an electrnic cigarette nw? Ungruped respnses can be seen in Figure. Mst respndents (84) reprted that they d nt use an e-cigarette nw, with 6 reprting at least nce a day, 3 at least nce a week, 2 at least nce a mnth and 5 less ften than mnthly (see Figure 7) At least nce a day At least nce a week At least nce a mnth Less than nce a mnth Dn't use ne nw Figure 7: Frequency f e-cigarette use in thse wh have tried e-cigarettes. 14 February 217 (Updated 9 August 217) Page 6 f 17

Frequency f e-cigarette use by peple wh reprted having tried e-cigarettes was then gruped t cmpare current and nn-current use f e-cigarettes acrss sub-grups. Key findings are: One in six (16) respndents wh reprted having tried e-cigarettes reprted that they currently use an e-cigarette either daily, weekly, mnthly r less ften than mnthly (see Figure 8). Reasns fr e-cigarette use Respndents wh reprted using e-cigarettes at least daily, weekly r mnthly (n = 79) were asked Why d yu use electrnic cigarettes nw? The tp 5 respnses are shwn in Figure Please nte - multiple respnses were allwed, therefre respndents may be represented in mre than ne categry. Mst respndents (65) reprted that the vapur did cntain nictine (see Figure 1212). Sub-grup cmparisns shwed: There was n difference by sex bserved in reprted nictine cntent f e-liquid vapur (see Figure 3). Yunger peple aged 15 t 24 years ld (23) were less likely t reprt that their e-liquid vapur cntained nictine when cmpared with thse aged 25 t 34 years (84) as well as thse aged 35 t 44 years (79) (see Figure 54). Nte: the sub-categries fr sex and age have small numbers, reflected in the size f the errr bars.
