4 NeuroSafe 2017 Symposium Course Purpose This two-day symposium offers a conversation about how to improve the safety and quality in neurosurgery. On local, state and national levels, providers face challenges in providing high-quality, safe neurosurgical care in complex healthcare systems. A focus by governments, commercial organizations, and neurosurgical professionals on the topics of quality and safety demonstrates gaps in this knowledge area. Considering the Triple Aim of patient outcomes, costs and patient experience, growing our knowledge and practical experience through national experts and sharing across organizations about strategies, studies and ideas will help achieve these aims via interactive case-based presentations, case reviews and discussions. Key Topics This innovative two-day symposium will offer cutting edge perspectives on quality and safety for neurosurgery, focusing on: Quality and Safety improvement efforts across all practice settings Quality and Safety outcome measures Quality and Safety challenges Quality and Safety leading the national conversation Quality and Safety building the safest environments for neurosurgery patients throughout the world. Educational Objectives Following completion of this educational symposium, the learner should be better able to : Describe how to problem solve quality and safety challenges using real-life examples Outline current neurosurgical quality and safety expectations Identify potential quality and safety outcomes measures in neurosurgery Create new, national collaborations in quality and safety Interpret regionalized quality and safety measures Describe outcomes and reimbursements Leverage your organization to improve quality and safety. Accreditation Statement Accreditation Statement In support of improving patient care, University of Minnesota, Interprofessional Continuing Education is jointly accredited by the Accreditation Council for Continuing Medical Education (ACCME), the Accreditation Council for Pharmacy Education (ACPE), and the American Nurses Credentialing Center (ANCC) to provide continuing education for the healthcare team. Credit Designation Statement American Medical Association (AMA) The University of Minnesota, Interprofessional Continuing Education designates this live activity for a maximum of 12.0 AMA PRA Category 1 Credits. 5 Welcome to NeuroSafe 2017 Symposium We are very excited you are here to attend our second annual NeuroSafe 2017 Symposium - Time Out to Reflect on Quality and Safety in Neurosurgery. NeuroSafe 2017 offers a conversation about how to improve safety and quality in neurosurgery. On local, state, and national levels, providers face challenges in giving high-quality, safe neurosurgical care in complex healthcare systems. A focus by governments, commercial organizations, and neurosurgical professionals on the topics of quality and safety demonstrates gaps in this knowledge area. Considering the Triple Aim of patient outcomes, costs and patient experience, we need to grow our knowledge and practical experience through national experts and sharing across organizations about strategies, studies and ideas to accomplish these aims. Learning how to deliver positive patient outcomes for all neurosurgical patients will be achieved during NeuroSafe 2017 through interactive case-based presentations, case reviews and discussions. Conference Overview The conference, to be held Thursday and Friday, July 20-21, includes invited lectures as well as multiple breakout sessions to talk about practical quality and safety improvement applications for neurosurgery. Most of the breakouts are repeated so that everyone can attend sessions they might otherwise miss. Thursday evening there is a reception, but dinner plans are up to each individual. There are lots of great restaurants in the Twin Cities. Perhaps this would be an opportunity to network further with your colleagues from the meeting. Friday night there is a group dinner in the Weisman Art Museum to wrap up and celebrate our work during the conference. Matthew A. Hunt, MD Course Director Neurosurgeon, Surgical Neuro-Oncologist, Associate Professor and Resident Program Director, Department of Neurosurgery Disclosure Summary information will be provided in a separate document. The NeuroSafe 2017 Symposium is presented by the University of Minnesota Department of Neurosurgery in cooperation with the Office of Continuing Professional Development - University of Minnesota Medical School. Over the next two days, we are honored to have five keynote presentations by leading North American neurosurgeons: D. Douglas Cochrane, MD, FRCSC, Surgical Improvement: A Multi-faceted Strategy Oren N. Gottfried, MD, FAANS, A Single Clinic Intervention to Facilitate Patient Communication, Improve Visit Satisfaction, and Provide Real-time Feedback Gerald A. Grant, MD, FACS, Hunt for Ambulatory Metrics in the Pediatric Neurosciences Ahmed M.T. Raslan, MD, Operative Efficiency, Resource Modeling and Surgical Education in Value Driven Markets John D. Rolston, MD, PhD, Improving Intraoperative Patient Safety.
