2 Welcome address Dear colleagues and guests: On behalf of the organizing committee, I am pleased to invite you to the 9th Pan-Pacific Continence Society (PPCS) Meeting, which will be held in Taichung, the third largest city in, on September 12 13, The main scientific meeting will be held on September 13. The main topic of this meeting is Doctrine of the Mean: from underactive to overactive; from retention to incontinence. This topic was inspired by ancient Chinese wisdom of the Confucian philosophy, which emphasizes the importance of maintaining balance and harmony in the midst of inputs from different directions and maintaining a state of constant equilibrium. This concept of balance applies to the management of lower urinary tract dysfunction. We, as functional urologists, do our best to strengthen the underactive bladder, but sometimes, we weaken the overactive bladder; also, we relieve obstruction, but sometimes it leads to incontinence. By applying the knowledge gained through our experiences, we bring the lower urinary tract function to a state of balance; the patients achieve a satisfactory quality of life and develop a bond of friendship with us. Taichung is an amazing city, but is not as famous as Taipei and Kaohsiung among foreign travelers. It is located in the middle of western, and has a population of approximately 2.7 million. This city has a mix of different cultures from southern and northern. There is a variety of delicious food, wonderful natural landscapes, and warm friendly people in the Taichung basin. In 2013, Taichung was elected as the 7th Intelligent City of the year by the Intelligent Community Forum. We look forward with great enthusiasm to seeing you, and hope you enjoy our hospitality at the 9th Pan-Pacific Continence Society meeting in Taichung,.
