2 PROGRAM DESCRIPTION Cancer treatment guidelines change rapidly; common treatment one year ago, is no longer standard treatment today. Changes in guidelines are challenging to keep up with as physicians struggle with time constraints and patient load to have opportunities to discuss the latest updates. The standard of care for cancer treatment requires a multidisciplinary approach. The 2018 Bon Secours Cancer Summit conference is a forum to bridge the gap between independent providers. At this summit a review of updates to NCCN guidelines and changes to treatment recommendations are evaluated with 360 input so many can benefit from research and time spent by individual clinicians. Using a conference to review, evaluate, and apply new technology and research results using a multidisciplinary approach allows for adherence to guidelines and ensures patients receive timely treatment resulting in improved quality of care. The mission to provide Good Help to Those in Need takes on special meaning in the care of our cancer patients and their families. We strive to provide an environment where healing and hope can flourish. At the Bon Secours Cancer Institute, our expert care team members combine science with the art of compassion. World-class surgical, medical, and radiation oncology experts; certified oncology nurses; and support staff collaborate to offer the latest and most effective inpatient and outpatient cancer treatments. For the 2018 Bon Secours Cancer Summit, we have chosen the following topics due to the timeliness with what the public is seeing in the media and the need for primary care and medical oncology physicians to have the ability to speak with their patients and answer questions on these topics and to address gaps in the literature: Innovative Therapies for Breast Cancer, Disparities in the Treatment of Cancer, Reconstructive Surgery, Advances in Radiation Oncology, Cancer Research in the Community Setting, and Treatment of Melanoma. 3 OUR FACULTY OUR FACULTY James Pellicane, MD received his undergraduate degree from The Johns Hopkins University and his medical degree from the University of Pittsburgh School of Medicine. He completed his general surgery residency at Virginia Commonwealth University/The Medical College of Virginia, and he is board certified by the American Board of Surgery. He is a fellow of the American College of Surgeons and is an active member of The American Society of Breast Surgeons. He co-founded Virginia Breast Center in 2005 and affiliated with Bon Secours in 2008 now with three surgeons serving all four Bon Secours hospitals in Richmond. Dr. Pellicane currently is the Director of Breast Oncology for Bon Secours, VA. serves as Regional Medical Director for Radiation Oncology. As a world-renowned radiation oncologist with more than 27 years of experience, he is known for his special expertise in brachytherapy in the treatment of breast, prostate, cervical, and other cancers. Dr. Prestidge is an inaugural Fellow of the American Brachytherapy Society. Prior to joining Bon Secours, Dr. Prestidge was Medical Director of the Department of Radiation Oncology at Memorial Hermann Southwest Hospital in Houston, Texas. He was also the Adjunct Professor at the University of Texas Health Science Center at San Antonio, Graduate Studies for Radiological Sciences. Dr. Prestidge earned his medical degree from Uniformed Services University of the Health Sciences in Bethesda, Maryland, and served an internship in internal medicine at David Grant USAF Medical Center at Travis Air Force Base in Fairfield, California. He completed his residency in radiation oncology at Stanford University Hospital in Stanford, California. He served as an active duty Air Force physician and consultant to the Surgeon General for 12 years. Roberta Bogaev, MD is the Medical Director of Advanced Heart Failure and Mechanical Circulatory Support for Bon Secours. Dr. Bogaev received her mechanical engineering degree from Virginia Tech and her medical degree and training from the University of Virginia. She is board certified in cardiology and advanced heart failure. She joins us from the Texas Heart Institute where she served as the Director of Heart Failure and Transplant and later as the Director of Outreach for the Advanced Heart Failure Program. Throughout her career, Dr. Bogaev has co-authored articles, book chapters, and abstracts in her field and has been active in clinical research. Dr. Bogaev and one of her LVAD patients, the Bionic Bride, made several appearances on the Today show, showcasing the advanced technology of continuous flow pumps. She is passionate about prevention of heart failure, early treatment of heart failure patients, and optimizing outcomes for patients who require mechanical circulatory support. Pink ribbons have been a thread of s story from a young age. Her mother was first diagnosed with breast cancer when Kristin was four years old, and she would later serve as caregiver at age 24 when her mother was diagnosed with terminal metastatic disease. Just a few years later in 2012, at 32, Kristin became the fourth generation in her family to be diagnosed with breast cancer. Diagnosed again in 2016, she is currently living(!) with metastatic breast cancer. Channeling a deep passion born of personal experience, Kristin became the Executive Director of Susan G. Komen Central Virginia in 2015 and works tirelessly in support of their mission to save lives and end breast cancer forever. Prior to Komen, she served as the Assistant Head of Upper School at the Collegiate School, having worked in education administration for nearly 10 years. Kristin earned both her undergraduate and graduate degrees from the University of Virginia and is proud to call Richmond home. Andrew S. Poklepovic, MD Associate Professor Assistant Professor, Division of Hematology, Oncology and Palliative Care Harrison Endowed Scholar Associate Member, Massey Cancer Center Developmental Therapeutics Program, Department of Internal Medicine, Division of Hematology, Oncology and Palliative Care Katherine E. Reeder-Hayes, MD is an early career physician investigator with a research focus on breast cancer race and age disparities and improving delivery of cancer care to vulnerable populations. Her prior experience includes analysis of race and age disparities in the receipt of sentinel lymph node surgery for breast cancer using SEER-Medicare-linked data and analysis of racial disparities in endocrine therapy initiation using statewide insurance-cancer registry linked data. She is a steering committee member for the North Carolina Integrated Cancer Information Surveillance System (ICISS), a core facility of the University of North Carolina that oversees the storage, linkage, and analysis of multiple large-data resources for cancer research and has contributed to the Carolina Breast Cancer Study Phase III, a nationally regarded prospective cohort study of African American and Caucasian women with breast cancer. In addition to her clinical training as a medical oncologist specializing in breast cancer, she has completed additional research training including a master s degree in clinical research from the UNC Department of Epidemiology and a post-doctoral fellowship in health services research from the nationally known Sheps Center for Health Services Research. She has experience with mixed methods studies including qualitative patient interviews, focus groups, survey data, and registry-claims-linked data. She serves as a member of the Protocol Review Committee for the Lineberger Comprehensive Cancer Center.
