2 Dignity Health Inaugural Pain & Palliative Care Symposium Purpose The inaugural pain management and palliative care symposium is designed to provide participants with an overview of strategies employed throughout the continuum of care for acute and chronic pain, symptom management, and end-of-life care. Participants will appreciate new techniques for identifying and managing cognitive and behavioral factors in pain, and treating chronic pain syndrome including headache. Course Objectives 1. Explore the pain management successes and barriers of care from the patient and the professional care team perspectives. 2. Describe loss and emotional suffering experiences of existential pain. 3. Discuss available treatments, benefits and barriers in an acute care setting of status migrainous. 4. Report on the opioid epidemic in Arizona and review the Governor s proposals and requirements for providers. 5. Examine general principles of opioid tapering, how to communicate with patients about tapering, and review case study strategies. 6. Identify benefits of alternative modes of therapy to support complex care. 7. Describe the mechanisms of action and benefits and barriers to care of cannabinoids. 8. Explain the concepts and goals of palliative care for patient support and symptom management. CME Accreditation is accredited by the Accreditation Council for Continuing Medical Education (ACCME) to provide continuing medical education for physicians.
