4 MADD Winnipeg is a 100% volunteer driven local charity (with no salaried staff); a grassroots organization that is committed to ending impaired driving in Manitoba and supporting the victims of this violent crime. At the heart of MADD Winnipeg are the members who may include victims, as well as concerned citizens, not just mothers, but also fathers, friends, acquaintances, fellow coworkers, business professionals, experts in the anti-impaired driving field and individuals who want to make a difference in our fight to end impaired driving. Local chapters and Community Leaders are affiliated with MADD Canada and are the local eyes, ears and voice of MADD Canada. The success and survival of MADD Canada s Winnipeg Chapter is dependent solely on the generous support of local caring individuals and the sponsoring of our local corporate community. MADD Winnipeg s aim is to offer support services to local victims, heighten public awareness about the ramifications of drinking and driving, and to save lives and prevent crashes and reduce the waste of medical, legal and emergency response resources and lost productivity and property damage. Driving while under the influence of alcohol/drugs is a devastating and violent crime that touches the lives and pocketbooks of all Manitobans. It is a senseless, selfish, irresponsible, dangerous choice of action. We believe impaired are not ; the consequences are the result of person(s) with impaired judgment making poor decisions. Fast Facts on MOTHERS AGAINST DRUNK DRIVING MADD s mission is: to stop impaired driving and to support victims and survivors of this violent crime Members are made up of Mothers, Fathers, Aunts, Uncles, Sisters and Brothers, lovers and friends Over 100 Chapters and Community Leaders, with over 7,500 volunteers coast to coast to coast Over 4 million red ribbons are distributed and more than 4 million pieces of mail sent annually Over 1 million Canadian students view our annual multimedia showing. MPI subsidized the production and paid for almost 110 schools in Manitoba the ability to view Aftermath last year. Over 1,100,000 hits on the website annually along with a rapid growing number of Facebook likes Offer programs for victims services, public awareness, legal research, chapter services and youth services, essay and poster contests, scholarships, volunteer training and public education Strides have been made since the early 1980 s (10 Canadians died daily), but we have a long road ahead in the elimination of impaired driving, currently the #1 criminal cause of death in Canada and a leading cause of death of our teens and young adults, all the while being 100% PREVENTABLE! Almost 120 Canadians are killed and over 5,000 Canadians are injured monthly, some permanently, some minor all due to alcohol / drugs related crashes An estimated 1,000,000 occurrences of impaired driving each month in Canada Approximately another 63,000 Canadians impacted by impaired drivers annually Merely 70,000 charges of impaired driving charges are laid in Canada s courts annually
