3 Session Descriptions Opening Keynote Address Facing Your Fears Managing Anxiety Symptoms in Everyday Life for Children and Adolescents with Autism Spectrum Disorders This presentation will review the Facing Your Fears program of research, highlighting the core components of the manualized cognitive behavioral group treatment approach developed to reduce the severity and interference of anxiety symptoms in children and adolescents with high-functioning ASD. An overview of the intervention, along with the results of treatment studies to date, will be provided. Adaptations for minimally verbal youth will also be discussed. Clinical and research implications based on the data thus far will be included in the presentation. Presented by Judith Reaven, PhD Session A Redefining Behavior: Practical Solutions for School, Home, and Community This presentation for educators and caregivers will describe and discuss the importance of effective sensory processing function and its relationship to children s ability to attend, respond, and adapt to the environment around them. The session will also detail how maladaptive sensory processing affects children s observable behavior and ability to effectively participate in daily interactions at home, in school, and in the community. Practical solutions to address common behaviors that impede children s function will be offered. Presented by Beth Aune, OTR/L Session B Implementing Evidence-based Practices to Increase Writing Skills in Students with ASD This session will review brain imaging research highlighting why individuals with ASD and sensory disorders struggle with the writing process. The session will explore the organization, sensory, motor, and language challenges these students experience during the writing process, and demonstrate ways in which technology and Universal Design for Learning can be used to enhance skill development for writing. The strategies set forth in this presentation are based on evidence-based practices and are aligned with Common Core Standards. Session C Building a Bridge Towards Success: An Integrative Model for Inclusion for Students with High-functioning Autism For individuals with autism, inclusion in a mainstream educational environment is important to create the conditions for success in later life. Parents of children with ASD fear that they will live in an environment that will be noncommittal at best and not meet their needs. John Miller, a special educator with a decade of experience, will examine the strategies and steps to make inclusion a less stressful and more rewarding experience, and will cover pragmatics, executive functioning, and organization, sensory, and behavior issues. The speaker will draw from his experiences both as a teacher and as an individual with autism. This interactive presentation will offer tools to help individuals with ASD succeed and even flourish in an inclusion setting. Presented by John Miller, MEd Session D Social Skills Strategies for Children and Adolescents with Language Challenges This session will focus on identifying core deficits of autism and language disorders that contribute to difficulties with social skill development. Parents and professionals will learn strategies to foster children s attention, engagement, and communication with peers and in groups. Presented by Jennifer Horton, LCSW-C, and Stacy Booker, MS, CCC-SLP Session E Autism and Everyday Executive Function Executive functions not only support attention and behavior, but also provide needed structure for social skills. This presentation will provide an overview of how executive function can be used to enhance social skills and communication for individuals with ASD. Presented by Paula Moraine, MEd Session F Sleep: The Final Frontier Sleep problems are common in children with autism, and can affect behavior, mood, and quality of life for the whole family. This session will review common sleep problems and what to expect in their diagnosis and treatment, highlighting new developments in the world of sleep in autism. Presented by Jennifer Accardo, MD, MSCE Presented by Cheryl Boucher, MSEd, OTR, and Kathy Oehler, MS, CCC-SLP
4 Session G The BIG BANG of AAC: Theories, Foundations, and a Practical Guide to Implementation Attendees of this workshop will gain a broad understanding of the range of augmentative and alternative communication (AAC) supports for children who are minimally verbal. Participants will actively engage in activities to build understanding of AAC theory and explore how to integrate theory and foundational skills into personal device use. The presenters will share their knowledge of how to build a foundation for AAC in preschool and early elementary school classrooms, thus bridging the gap between the different communication environments. Presented by Michael Molinaro, MS, CCC-SLP, and Melissa Subock, MS, CCC-SLP Session H Bringing Early Achievements Evidence-based Strategies to Classroom Preschool Teachers This presentation will describe how the evidencebased Early Achievements intervention was adapted for implementation in public preschool classrooms for children with autism spectrum disorders and other developmental delays. Elements of the intervention, which was developed for two-year-olds by Dr. Landa at Kennedy Krieger Institute s Center for Autism and Related Disorders, will be described. Feasibility for implementation in public preschool classrooms will be discussed. Presented by Rebecca Landa, PhD, CCC-SLP Session I Update on Genetic Causes of Autism This presentation will describe the types of genetic variation that have been linked to autism spectrum disorders and related genetic diseases, and highlight the successes to date, the implications of these findings, and the future directions of ASD causal research. Presented by Daniele Fallin, PhD Session J GI Issues and Food Selectivity in Children with ASD Gastrointestinal (GI) concerns are common in children with autism spectrum disorders, as are strong food preferences. This session will cover common GI problems and management, as well as theories about the relationship of ASD to the GI tract. Drs. Levey and Girolami will discuss the range of feeding problems seen in children with ASD, and the interdisciplinary treatment approach used in the Feeding Disorders Program at Kennedy Krieger Institute. Session K ASD and Bullying: Positive Interventions for Victims and Perpetrators One of the biggest problems facing children with autism is victimization by bullies. This session will provide strategies to teach students self-advocacy skills and how to avoid and protect themselves from bullying. The presenter will discuss how to question individuals with autism who are either victims or perpetrators in bullying scenarios. Attendees will leave better prepared to create an environment in which individuals with autism are empowered and bullying is dealt with in a practical, proactive manner. Presented by John Miller, MEd Session L But What Do I Do Tomorrow? Three Key Strategies for Supporting a Person with Autism Those who support a child with ASD face many challenges. Sifting through the vast amount of research and available interventions can be overwhelming. This session focuses on what everyone parents, teachers, extended family, support personnel can do each day to ensure success for the child and for all involved. This presentation is full of humor, reality, and practical ideas. Presented by Alyson Beytien, MS, BCBA Closing Keynote Straight from the Source: A panel of adults on the spectrum and parents will share their firsthand experiences, perspectives, challenges, and joys of living with autism. What helped? What didn t? What would they do differently? Candid firsthand accounts of living with autism will provide valuable insights and benefit parents, professionals, and individuals with autism. Panel Discussion Moderator: Melanie Pinkett-Davis, MSW, LCSW-C Panelists: John Miller, MEd, special educator and individual on the spectrum; Michael Shor, MSW, therapist and individual on the spectrum; Alyson Beytien, MS, BCBA, autism consultant, behavior specialist, and mother of three sons with autism; Betsy Shor, MSW, LICSW, clinical social worker and mother of Michael, listed above Presented by Eric Levey, MD, and Peter Girolami, PhD
