3 Course overview and intended audience The AHN Dr. Walter Grand Brain Endoscopy Course is an endoscopic intraventricular and skull base instructional course inspired by Dr. Walter Grand, a pioneer in neuroendoscopy and an esteemed neurosurgeon and neurosurgical educator. The course is intended for neurosurgical residents, fellows, and attending neurosurgeons interested in minimally invasive endoscopic approaches to intraventricular, sellar, and parasellar pathology. Course Objectives During a two day period of didactic lectures and practical cadaver lab sessions, course participants will become familiar with utilizing flexible as well as rigid intracranial and skull base endoscopic equipment. They will accrue the knowledge and technical skill set to perform the following endoscopic procedures in their own practices: Endoscopic third ventriculostomy (ETV) Septum pellucidum fenestration (SPF) Endoscopic approaches to intraventricular tumors and cysts of the third ventricle, lateral ventricles, and the pineal region Flexible endoscopy Endoscopic assisted surgery including the supraorbital approach Endoscopic transnasal transsphenoidal approaches to sellar and parasellar pathology Upon completion of this course, participants should be able to: Understand ventricular and sellar/parasellar anatomy and imaging characteristics Identify intraventricular as well as sellar/parasellar pathology amenable to endoscopic treatment Recognize the differences between intracranial and skull base endoscopic systems Become comfortable utilizing intracranial and skull base endoscopes and instrumentation Recognize the indications for flexible endoscopy in addition to understanding and utilizing the flexible endoscope Develop an awareness of endoscopic complications and understand complication management and avoidance strategies
