There were five visitors who added to the occasion of hearing Caitlin Pond. She gave us her insight into NYSF that she attended earlier this year. Caitlin was affected by her attendance at the Forum as it has given her direction for the future. A "life changing experience" was Caitlin's summation. What a great result and congratulations to Rob Russell for carrying out his duties last year and getting such an outstanding nomination as Caitlin. Ellie Morrison also attended last week and no doubt it added to Ellie's excitement as

2 she was successful and will attend the next NYSF. Good to see Norm Tucker back and looking well, also for getting Judy C to win H%T. We remembered one of the truly great past members, PDG Tom Tait, who died recently. Arthur King told us a bit about his thoughts of Tom. We all agree that Tom was a dedicated Rotarian and a very fine person. I always fondly remember Tom as he was MC at our wedding 37 years ago and he was instrumental in getting me to move to Nowra. Many years ago Tom helped organise a very financially successful art sale of Leonard Long landscapes along the Shoalhaven River. Don't forget that if you have news on family, birthdays, events or funnies, let us all hear about it during members news-time just before H%T. Photos can be shown by arrangement with Mick. The Membership Committee has met, but we need more names of prospective members. Please note, the ball is rolling to hold an information night for potential Rotarians. Graeme Judy Cord even had a bigger smile when she won the H&T and President Graeme guided her towards selecting a bottle of red wine as the prize SCR Article Photos and caption details for Wed 12 th August (As forwarded to editor) A local family of budding scientists Rotary Nowra s 2015 National Youth Science Forum (NYSF) student Caitlin Pond, a year 12 student at the Nowra High School was the guest speaker at last week s dinner meeting. Prior to Caitlin s talk her proud father Peter Caitlin gave Rotarians and guests an update on Caitlin s brother Aiden who was a Rotary Science sponsorship recipient in Peter said that since completing his HSC in 2013 Aiden has been attending the Wollongong University undertaking his Batchelor of Computer Science. Peter went on to say that Aiden is also very proactive in encouraging high school students to follow a career in science as a staff member at NYSF over the past two annual forums and was also appointed as a STEM (Science, Technology, Engineering and Maths) ambassador at Wollongong University. His role in this capacity to explain to potential students at open days etc. the workings of the university and to inspire them to follow a career in the sciences. Aiden has set his sights on cyber security as a speciality when he completes his studies. Nowra Rotarians very much appreciated this wonderful feedback on Aiden. Caitlin then spoke about her experiences at this year s NYSF to a back drop of photos that demonstrated that she had a wonderful time making new friends and having an eye opening experience in the world of Science. Caitlin spoke about the rigorous selection process, her morning tea with NSW Governor Dame Marie Bashir at Government House Sydney and her induction into the Australian National

3 University s, Burgmann house Canberra for her recent two-week NYSF experience. Caitlin said that her buddy for the fortnight was Ally a high school student from Bundaberg, Queensland and that they were both assigned to the chemistry interest group named Curie. Caitlin said every day from then on they had amazing experiences hearing scientific speaker, working in laboratories and visiting industry and science institutions in and around Canberra Caitlin added that and even though chemistry was her interest she also learnt a lot about the world of physics, biology and other fields of science. Caitlin said that just being around like minded student including overseas students who might one day be scientific leaders was an experience that she will always treasure and one that has cemented her science based career path. Caitlin said that since Canberra she has attended another NYSF event exploring, and that with her research and experiences she has considered science, audiology, sonology and midwifery however is leaning towards psychology as her favoured career direction. Caitlin said that while the media is continually stating that the future of Australia is dependent upon science skills, the numbers of students enrolling in science subjects at high schools and universities is falling. On behalf of her parents and herself Caitlin thanked Nowra Rotary for their assistance adding that Rotary is performing a valuable nation-building role in encouraging and supporting students in science Amongst the guests were Eleanor (Ellie) Morrison and her parents Paul and Paula who announced that they have recently become Australian citizens to the applause of Rotarians. Former Youth Director Rob Russell the now President elect of Rotary Nowra welcomed Ellie announcing that she is Rotary s latest NYSF student and that the selectors were most impressed with her application and interview for the 2016 program. 4 Tribute to Tom Tait (Arthur King) It is with the deepest regret that we have to announce the death of Tom Tait who was one of the most distinguished members of the Nowra Rotary Club. He died on 31 July, 2015 at Lane Cove, aged 93. Tom joined the Rotary Club of Nowra on 26 April, 1950 with the classification of Accountancy. He held every position within the club over his membership except treasurer. He was secretary for the periods and , and Club President in Tom went on to serve on committees in District 278 and 971. At zone level he was most active holding many positions from among the most creditable being something to do with FAIM. At international level Tom made a significant contribution, starting with District Governor in His final position at this level was District 971 representative to Council on Legislation in Singapore in In 1991 Tom and Thelma left Nowra and Tom joined the Rotary Club of Lane Cove. On 23 October 1991, Tom became an honorary member of Nowra Rotary and has remained so until his death. To sum up, in Tom s words, I have made Rotary my lifetime hobby.
