Our Rotary Club meeting on Tuesday 4 September was a great night for our members, partners and guests and the Box Hill Rotary Club. It was a full house, where our Rotarians and partners witnessed an excellent presentation from four (4) TeamMed students over the 2018 & 2019 Uganda trips. This also included a short video of the medical support provided at the Suubi Community Health Clinic to the communities in and around the Lubanda village in south western Uganada. This great evening was also witnessed by students (and parents) from Presbyterian Ladies College, who were recently elected to positions as Directors/Office Bearers on the newly formed PLC Interact Club. I m sure the students found the presentation interesting and gave them some ideas about developing their own International Projects. Thanks to Local & Community Projects (and Youth) Director, Clive Nicholson, for his great work in establishing the Interact Club at PLC! Our PE Ray Riehm did a great job as Chairman for the evening and he is also to be congratulated for submitting the 2019 D9810 District Grant Application for this excellent Project, which all our Rotary members should be proud to be associated with. In another great result for our Club, I was pleased to receive advice from Department of Justice that our Club s application for a grant to assist Whitehorse Police with the development of the Community Crime Prevention Information kit was successful. This grant provides just over $9k to our Club and will provide a great opportunity to promote our Rotary Club via advertising space in the kits that will be distributed in large numbers to our community. Chisholm Volunteer Awards were presented to fellow Rotarians Clem Joyce & Tom Thorpe on Friday 17 August at Huntingtower College by Julia Banks MP, Federal member for Chisholm, and Hon Julie Bishop, Minister for Foreign Affairs. Congratulations, Clem & Tom! Pictured here are our treasured fellow Rotarians, Norma Seip and Patrick Fitzgerald, manning our Op Shop on one of their Saturday morning volunteer shifts. This is a great hands on way to serve the local community and support Rotary in a visible way! Speak with Clem if you or a family member are able to volunteer time to work in the Op Shop.

3 At our partner s meeting night on 7 August we had the pleasure of hearing from Leanne King, Coordinator of the Refresh/Renew Programs which is run out of the The Avenue Neighborhood House. Our Club (via our Youth Services) and Whitehorse Rotaract currently support the Refresh Program which provides much needed assistance to youths who have dropped out of mainstream schools due to a variety of reasons (bullying/drugs/mental/family breakdown, etc). Our club supports a Rotary/Rotaract Award for the graduate who achieves the highest score at the end of the year. This excellent program will again be supported by both clubs. The guest speaker at our Club meeting on 21 August was Sue Carlile, CEO of Family Access Network (FAN). Sue commenced as a volunteer in FAN commenced in 1981 in response to growing numbers of young people experiencing or at risk of homelessness in the local community. The committee was comprised of volunteers, families who provided short term housing for the homeless. Volunteers were organised by Steve McLoughlin (founder of FAN), who worked for Box Hill Council as Youth Services Co-ordinator. FAN s longest serving volunteer was former Box Hill Senior Sergeant, Alan Rogerson, who was also a former member of our Club. Sue provided an excellent presentation over FAN and the excellent work this organization does for our local community. 4 Sep TeamMED Presentation what an inspiring evening we had from the four Monash TeamMed student doctors, Amy Wang & Anysha Walia, who were part of the team that visited Uganda in January 2018, and Ishka De Silva & Liam Mahoney (who will be part of the January 2019 team). The successful 2018 trip to Suubi Clinic saw the medical team hold 3 community clinic days and 2 outreach clinics, plus a dental hygiene awareness education event. Liam and Ishka spoke about their excitement of being part of the TeamMed trip that will be held from 4 to 26 January next year. All speakers thanked the club for their financial support and were greatly appreciative of our current partnership and continued involvement in the TeamMed Uganda project. It was also a pleasure to welcome the PLC students and their parents to the club. 5 OUR CLUB MEETINGS The Rotary Club of Box Hill meets at 6.00pm for 6.30pm every 1 st, 3 rd and 5 th Tuesday evening in the Board Room of the Blackburn Hotel, 111 Whitehorse Road, Blackburn. Meetings are held over a 2 course dinner for $20, including tea and coffee. Drinks at bar prices. On the 2 nd and 4 th Tuesdays we meet at 6.00pm in the Bistro at the Blackburn Hotel for an informal fellowship meal.
